Area 51 Strategy Guide - Part II

One of Them

You are now a Mutant. There are some things you should know. First, you now have to worry about your Mutagen Meter. If it gets low you'll die. You can refill this meter by either Melee Attacking an enemy (click down on right thumbstick, Xbox and PS2), finding Orange Mutagen vials (look like health, but are orange), or by sucking the Mutagen out of an infected body (comes later). For now, however, simply go up to any enemy that you see and use your Melee Attack to kill them. The enemies keep coming, usually by crawling down the walls.

Soon, the ladder going up to the booth above will drop and you can climb it. Do so and go through the door. You are now in a room labelled "Sublevel 53". Kill the Mutants then find the elevator on the other side of the room. Enter and activate it to go up. Exit the elevator and go left around the catwalk. Kill the Mutant that jumps out of the vent, then go down the stairs on your left. When you get to the dead scientist, he'll reanimate and tell you to find Dr. Cray!

CHECKPOINT: Out of the Frying Pan

Kill the Mutant, go through the door, kill the Mutant, and go up the stairs. Go through the next door, note the elevator in front of you, then go left. Kill the armed Mutant and go through the door. Kill any more Mutants and then follow the green arrow to the cylinder chamber. Enter the chamber.

You're cured! Kind of. Actually, you have the best of both worlds. At this point, you can switch back and forth between Hazmat Ethan Cole and Mutant Ethan Cole. You do this by pressing "Up" on your D-Pad (Xbox and PS2). While in Human form, your Mutagen Meter will refill. I don't find much of an advantage to using the Mutant form of Ethan Cole, so unless I say so, assume that I'm normal (Hazmat) Ethan Cole.

Head to the exit and you'll get a pop-down TV of Dr. Cray. He'll tell you to get to him quickly. Scan the Document to the right of the door if you want.

CHECKPOINT: And Into the Fire...

As soon as you re-enter the hall, Black-Ops troops will attack. Kill them. Enter the elevator on the right (the one that I had you note earlier) and you'll discover that you need a Level 2 Keycard to access it. Rats!

Continue down the hallway clearing out the Black-Ops with the help of some Grenades. Go through the door at the end of the hallway. In this room you'll see an Infected Corpse. You'll know it's one because it glows and looks fuzzy. You can replenish your Mutagen Meter by standing near the body and holding down your "Activate" button.

You won't have time texperimentnt with this because you'll be raided by more Black-Ops. Kill them, then go into the room with all of the dead scientists. One of them has the Level 2 Keycard near him. Grab it. Then, use some Health if you need it and scan the Document on the floor. Exit back out.

CHECKPOINT: Cray's Warning

Head back down the hallway toward the elevator, killing the Black-Ops as you do. When you near the elevator, Mutants will come out. Kill the first few, then run into the elevator and activate the switch. End of Chapter.

Internal Changes

As you go down the elevator, you'll be told of a new Mutant Power: Launch Parasites. You can launch parasites by pressing your "Primary Fire" button. Doing so uses your Mutagen Meter, so be aware of it. Again, unless I state otherwise, I find it best to remain in the Human form.

Exit the elevator and head right. If you have a Grenade, save it. Shoot the Black-Ops in the hall then find the hallway off to the right. You'll see a group of Black-Ops. Chuck your Grenade into the area then clear out anybody who survived. Go through the door and the next one.

Go into the glass viewing area, where you'll find two Healths, and you'll trigger a cutscene of some Illuminati talking over a mutated body with mutagen vials in him. Go through the unlocked door to the left and head downstairs to the lab area.

CHECKPOINT: Enter the Leaper

Great. You now have to deal with a new class of Mutant: the Leaper. This is the final stage of mutation. You can identify Leapers because they use all four limbs to move and can climb walls. Six or so Leapers will come out of their cages and attack you. Shoot them dead.

Scan the body on the table, play around with electrocuting the Mutant behind the glass (if you do it three times, he'll burn), hit the switch to the left of the Mutant behind the glass (the one on the back wall that opens the Health rooms), find the two rooms with the Ammo and Health, finally, hit the lift switch to the left of the mutant to lower the lift. Get on and ride up.

CHECKPOINT: Watch Your Back

Hit the switch in the control room, then ride the lift back down. Go through the now open door on the right. You have to locate the Power Conduit and prevent its destruction. Go forward to the dead Black-Ops soldier and grab the Shotgun near him. Go forward, kill the Mutant that jumps down at you, then turn around and kill the one that comes at you from behind. Go up the stairs and kill the mutant that drops down and then go through the door.

You'll see a large explosion. This is a difficult area. There are three enemies off to the left, in the side room, then there are a number of enemies to the right and around the corner. First, arm your Shotgun. Then rush into the left room and kill the three Black-Ops in there. Switch to your Assault Rifle and move forward taking cover behind the pipe on the left. Shoot the Black-Ops soldiers in the hallway. Move forward to the corner and you'll see a Black-Ops soldier poke around the corner and throw a grenade at you. Be careful. Shoot him when he reveals himself.

Round the corner and shoot the Black-Ops on the right then clear out the rest of them. If you have any Grenades left, now is a good time to use them. Once the hallway is clear, go through the door at the end.

CHECKPOINT: Conduit Conundrum

Go forward and kill the three Black-Ops. When you get to the door you'll get a 45 second clock. You have to stop the C4 from exploding. Enter the room and start shooting the enemies on the right. You'll see one of them setting the C4. Kill them all then go up to the C4 and use your "Activate" button to stop it. To the right of it, notice the Level 3 Keycard. Grab it. Also, be aware of the Black-Ops leader. This soldier icamouflageded (invisible). Find him and kill him. He's red when nocamouflageded.

Go down the stairs and follow the green arrow until you get another drop down screen with Dr. Cray. Go through the door. Enter the elevator on the right and activate it. Chapter end.

Life or Death

Exit the elevator and head right for another Dr. Cray message. Go through the door that opens.

CHECKPOINT: Stairwell

Head down the stairs. At the second landing you'll see the Sniper Rifle next to a dead soldier. Grab it. Continue down the stairs to the bottom and you'll find a JB Grenade (Jumping Bean Grenade). This Grenade hones in on targets. Kill the Black-Ops soldier then go to the doorway. Equip your Sniper Rifle (you can zoom in twice with your Secondary Weapon button) and pick off the two Black-Ops in the catwalks up above.

Follow the catwalk, killing as you go, to the ladder and go down. Kill the enemies in the area then find the yellow elevator and go up. Kill the enemies in this area then find the broken span in the catwalk (facing the "Sublevel 53" label on the wall) and jump the gap. Head left to the door (if the door isn't open, go back down and kill any remaining enemies).

CHECKPOINT: Arm Room Entrance

In this area it is best to pull out your Sniper Rifle, locating the enemies, then sniping them in the head. Go down the nearby ladder once nobody is shooting at you. Go up to the control panel and you'll discover it doesn't work. Go down the next ladder to the bottom floor of this area. Go forward, kill the Spider Mutants, and then use the lift on the far side to go up.

Go up the ladder and you'll find a Keycard next to a dead soldier. Go back down the ladder and the lift and head back to the console that didn't work a second ago. It'll work now. However, you have to deal with new enemies. Pick them off with the Sniper Rifle. Once the area is clear, hit the switch on the control panel. You'll see the large piece of equipment in front of you start moving...it's kind of an arm to grab the cylinders. Anyway, go back down the ladder and up the other side to where you got the Keycard.

Go up to the "Maintenance Access" gate and open it. Wait for the Arm Machine to come your way. When it is under you, walk off the catwalk and onto the top of it. It will carry you to the other side where you will find a ladder on the right. Go up, kill the Black-Ops and go through the door.

CHECKPOINT: Arm Room Exit

You'll get another Dr. Cray message. You have 4 minutes to get to the bottom and deactivate 4 control panels. Work your way around the catwalk, killing the Black-Ops soldiers, then go down the stairs all the way to the bottom. Then, drop down into the lowest area, kill the Black-Ops here, then hit all four switches to deactivate the chambers.

Use the collapsed ladder in the corner to get out of this low area. Go back up the stairs until you find the gap in the catwalk. Jump the gap, jump the next gap, then jump the gap to the lower catwalk. Finally, jump the small gap to the area where there are some Black-Ops shooting at you. Go through the door. Kill the two Spider Mutants then enter the Maintenance Elevator. End of chapter.

Dr. Cray

Go up the ramp and enter the room. On your left is a bunch of Ammo, there are several enemies in the area, and you'll see three ceiling-mounted Turret Guns. The guns won't shoot you, just the Black-Ops. Clear the room of enemies. Go up to the large circular door and it will open. Go through the tunnel to the next large door and go through.

Finally, you are in Dr. Cray's lab and Dr. Cray is in front of you. Wait for him to talk to you. Some Black-Ops will re-enter the area and you need to fend them off while Dr. Cray readies the decontamination chamber. Note the five Health and five Mutagen vials on either side of the large round door on your way back out. Kill all of the enemies and then go back into the Lab.

Note the purple chamber in the middle of the room. You'll be going there soon. For now, go to the right of it and past it to the blue lift in the corner. Go up and through the door. In this lab, go around and find Victor (the Scientist) who will open the next door for you.

CHECKPOINT: Meeting Victor

Go into the infirmary, kill the three Mutants, and then wait for Victor to open the next door. Go through. You'll see a cutscene of a Scientist being attacked by a Mutant. Kill the four Mutants then find the Small Key on the dead Scientist. This key will open the Lockboxes in the game. Kill the rest of the Mutants, go up the stairs, open the Lockboxes if you want, and scan the various items in the area. Find the Purple Chamber on the right and enter it. Exit the purple chamber and follow the green arrow to the Template Fluid, pretty much right in front of you. Grab it. Backtrack to the lab.

CHECKPOINT: Return to Cray

Victor will open the door to the lab and get blown away when the door blows up. You'll also note that you received another Small Key automatically. Kill the Black-Ops soldiers. Then, go back to the main lab and go down the lift. Place the Template Fluid in the holder (green arrow). Wait for Dr. Cray to open the purple chamber and enter it.

You'll exit it a Mutant and you'll gain a new power: Launch Contagion. You can do this with your "Secondary Fire" button. You don't have to remain a Mutant, but you can if you want. I prefer to be Human, so I turned back to being Human, and then I killed the enemies in the room.

Facing the large round door, go left through the door that has been blown open. Another floating body will talk to you. Enter the elevator. Chapter end.

Hatching Parasites

You need to find a way to the Turret Test Lab. Exit the elevator for another floating body...he tells you about your Contagion power...that it seeks to, well, infect others. There is a retinal scanner on your left. You need some eyeballs to operate it. Fortunately, there is a severed head nearby. Simply follow the left hallway around to it. Grab it and bring it back to the retinal scanner and use it. Go through the door it opens.

Kill the Mutants and you'll see a malfunctioning door on the left. Go down the ladder on the right and find the control panel with the two switches. Activate both of them. The laser will blast through the malfunctioning door. Climb back up the ladder (or take the lift) and go through the now open door. Kill the Spider Mutants and go through the door on the right.

When it Rains...

Kill the Black-Ops soldiers. Go right first into the research lab and grab the JB Grenades, Health and other Ammo. Then, head the other way to the narrow room with many columns. Go down the stairs a tad to trigger the enemies at the far end. Take out your Sniper Rifle and pick them off. Or, use a few JB Grenades and watch them take off and seek out the enemies. Go down into the lower area and make your way to the other end, taking out any Black-Ops that come out.

When you get to the other side you'll find a door switch that need a Keycard. Go to the left of the locked door and into the "Anti Gravity Chamber".

CHECKPOINT: ...It Pours

Kill the Mutant who attacks the Scientist, and then go up to the control panel and hit the switch. This will cause the Anti Gravity Chamber to become active and you'll see some debris floating in the chamber. Go into the chamber, use the lift to go up, and then hop from floating platform to floating platform. Go around the path to the Yellow Keycard and pick it up. As soon as you do, you'll be attacked. Kill the Black-Ops soldiers and then backtrack all the way back to the locked door that needed the Keycard. Go through and to the next door.

CHECKPOINT: Better Part of Valor

Go to the stairwell on the right wall and go up. Kill the oncoming Black-Ops. At the first large landing, notice the switch. If you push it, it says, "Weapon Not Charged." Looks like you know what you have to do. Continue up the stairs and hit the switch on the control panel. This will charge the weapon. Go back down to the other control panel and hit the switch to fire the weapon. Do this a few more times for fun.

Go back upstairs and go left to the end of the catwalk. Cross over the garage door to the other side and enter the vent (you need to crouch). You'll get to an intersection of vents. Kill the Spider Mutants that come out of the left vent and then go through the vent in front of you. End of chapter.

Project: Blue Book

Move forward for a cutscene. Drop down onto the grate. In order to bust through the grate, you have to shoot it. Do so then kill the two Black-Ops. Go up to the dying soldier who will tell you that you need to find the backup comm station.

Go through the door that opens. Approach the switch in front of you.

CHECKPOINT: Clandestine

Hit the switch to open the door. In front of you there will be a floating UFO. Neat. Go to the lift and ride it down, then use the stairs on the left to get down, underneath the UFO. Enemies will be firing on you from the left. Ignore them for now and go to the switch nearest the UFO and activate it. This will cause the UFO to lower a platform for you. Go up to it and you'll float up and into the UFO.

It is a tad difficult to find, but there is a control panel inside the UFO. Find it and hit the switch. This will charge the weapon. Exit out of the UFO and hit the switch to the left of the other switch. This will fire the weapon and will drop a catwalk for you to climb. You have to jump to the fallen catwalk and then go up it.

CHECKPOINT: CE-II

This is a tough area. Get mentally prepared. Deep breathing...good. Go up the stairs and throw a Grenade at the two enemies to the left. Kill the other one that comes down. Note that there is Health near the two enemies you just killed. Go up the next stairs and the next door will open.

Don't go through the door yet. Instead, stay against the right wall and wait for one enemy to come from the left and then one (or two or three) from the right; kill them. Next, get your Shotgun ready and run like a banshee to the right, blasting enemies at close range as you run. Go all the way around to the control panel and hit the switch. The UFO in the middle will drop.

Now, you have various enemies firing on you from a distance. Run like a banshee all the way back to where you entered this area and if you have any Health left back in this area, go grab it. Then, in the same manner that you took cover earlier, using the doorway area, pull out your Sniper Rifle and start locating the enemy fire coming from the left. Also, be very aware of the Turret Gun that will shoot at you if you get too close.

Use youAssaultlt Rifle to fire at the Turret until you see it blow up. At this point, you are safe. Go to the middle extended platform and jump onto the UFO. You've done all of this work...don't die by making a foolish jump. First, make a nice easy jump to the UFO itself. Next, find the platform on the right. This is a difficult jump to make. I tried about 7 times before I finally made it (yes, I kept having to replay the whole area to discover a fool-proof way of doing it). If you have more than half your Health and you miss the jump, you'll fall down and probably survive. In order to make the jump successfully, go as near to the platform as you can. Basically, you're on the edge of the UFO at this point. Note that the UFO hovers up and down a tad. When it's at its peak, jump up to the platform. The key is being close to the platform, not jumping from a distance.

Once you're on the platform, ride the platform down (it's a lift). Get your Shotgun ready and go to the next lift and go up. Kill the two Black-Ops to your right and then work your way up the stairs, killing as you go. Go through the door at the top on the left.

CHECKPOINT: Making Contact

Go through the hall, kill the two Black-Ops and go through the next door. Go down the stairs and kill the enemies at the bottom. Be aware that there is a one Black-Ops at the base of the stairs to the left. Continue through the door for Chapter End.

Lies of the Past

Go to the console in front of you and activate the switch to open the door. A few Black-Ops will emerge. Go through the door and into the hallway. Note the alcove to the left where you can find a bunch of Health. Go into the main square room, kill the three Black-Ops then go to the central horizontal cylinder and grab the BBG Alien Weapon. This weapon fires plasmas rounds that bounce off of walls and stick to people, thus exploding. Note that the "Secondary Fire" button produces a laser showing you the path of the rounds you'll fire. I wasn't a big fan of this weapon at first, but after using it later in the game, I found it to be my favorite. Remember, the rounds stick to your enemies, so fire and wait to see them explode. You can go through another door in this room for a Shotgun and some Health. To continue on, go through the doorway leading to the hallway with the fire.

CHECKPOINT: Universal Truths

You'll soon get to a console with a switch you can't use. Go to the catwalk stairway area where you'll see a large electric column. Note: At the very bottom of the stairs you can find a lot of Health. Work your way down the stairs, killing as you go, until you see the control room and your green arrow tells you that you are on the correct level. Kill the Black-Ops here, enter the door and go along the hall to the control room. Go up to the control panel and hit the switch to talk to Bridges. He is very fuzzy and you discover that there are four Jammers that you need to take care of.

CHECKPOINT: Comm Station

You have to find and destroy the four Jammers. Each of the four jammers is on the wall near the large electric column. You'll notice that there are balls of energy on that column. Near each ball of energy, on the wall, you'll find a Jammer. All you have to do is shoot the Jammer to destroy it. Also note that if you're looking in the general direction of a Jammer, it'll say, "Transmission Jamming Device".

Exit the control room and look up to the electric column. You'll be able to shoot two of the Jammers from here. Go up the stairs to find the third Jammer. Watch out for enemies, especially the invisible Black-Op Leaders. Continue all the way up to where you entered this area and find the control panel that you couldn't activate earlier. Now you can. Do so and watch the ladder in front of you drop down. Climb up the ladder and you'll be able to shoot the fourth Jammer. Go back down the ladder, kill the Black-Ops and Black-Ops Leaders, and then go back down to the control room. Back at the control room, activate the switch to contact Bridges. Exit the control room and go down the stairs. Go through the door marked with the green arrow.

CHECKPOINT: One Small Step for a Man...

You'll see another floating body messenger. When the doors open you'll see two Black-Ops Leaders; they are unaware of you. Toss a grenade in their area. Move forward through the area, killing as you go.

You'll soon see a door on the left that leads to a storage room where you can get some Health if you need it. Continue killing and moving forward until you get to the elevator. Go up.

CHECKPOINT:...One Giant Step for Mankind

Okay, that was cool. This is a nasty area. The easiest way to get through it is to go into the storage room to the right of the elevator (if facing out towards the TV set). Inside the storage room are six Healths and three Mutagens. From here you can shoot any oncoming Black-Ops Leaders and then grab the Health when you need it. I prefer to use the Shotgun, put my back to the crates, and then shoot the enemies through the windows as they come.

After you kill four Black-Ops Leaders, exit the storage room. You need to find two Batteries. Head to the TV Set (Moonscape) and as soon as you cross into the moonscape, go right to the forklift and grab the nearby Battery. Bring it to the Lunar Lander and place it.

Going to the Lunar Lander may trigger more enemies (depending if you took out everybody earlier or not). If so, go back to the storage room and take them out the same way you did the earlier enemies.

To get the Second Battery, from the Lunar Lander, face the "Earth" and look diagonally right to find the Rover (car). The Battery is near the Rover. Grab it and bring it to the Lander and place it.

The Crane is now powered. Go back to the storage room area where you'll find a control panel outside the storage room. Activate it and you'll see the Lunar Lander rise up. Again, go into the storage room as more enemies will come out from above, on the catwalk. You can shoot the enemies through the floor of the catwalk, so use that to your advantage and then kill off any remaining enemies, particularly the two that are on the light rigging above the TV set.

When the area is clear go up the ladder on the Lunar Lander and then jump to the light rigging. Look to the left for the yellow railing catwalk (above the storage room) and walk along the rigging and drop down onto the catwalk. Note: There is various Ammo and Health on the rigging, so explore if you want.

Now on the catwalk, head to the door, three Black-Ops will come out. Kill them then enter the room and go down the hall where you'll talk to an Illuminati. When he goes away, kill the two Black-Ops Leaders and enter the elevator.
