LB's Beyond Good & Evil Review

Some games slip under the radar. Don't let this be one of them.

In November 2003 UbiSoft released "Beyond Good and Evil". The game was released at the peak of the high season of holiday releases, and, sadly, the game was missed by most gamers as they opted for titles with more money behind their advertising. We were also guilty of this. The game continued to get great reviews, many comparing it to the "Zelda" series, but "Beyond Good and Evil" never made it to a respectable rank on the sales charts. At the beginning of January, Ubi made the decision to do something rarely done in the gaming industry: The dropped the price of "Beyond Good and Evil" to $19.99. Ubi knew the game was too good to let slip by gamers, and, the fact of the matter is, they were right.

"Beyond Good and Evil" is a unique gaming adventure full of puzzles, interesting characters, a good story, beautiful images, stunning music, a hint of "Zelda", and a dash of "Pokemon Snap". You play as the heroine, Jade, an orphan left under the care of her uncle (a pig named Pey'J). Jade is a photographer, and after the security of her lovely land seems to be shaken by those who are supposed to be protecting the land, is sent on assignment by an underground group to break into different areas and take pictures of various crimes committed by their protectors. The goal is to get the people of Hillys to see their protectors are, in fact, their enemies. So, with camera in one hand and Dai-Jo Stick in the other, Jade is sent off to make her way through various dungeons, fighting off many enemies, and solving many puzzles to get the evidence she needs.

"Beyond Good and Evil"'s greatest accomplishment was putting a handful of different gaming elements into one cohesive package. Puzzle solving and stealth tactics are skills needed in many games, but add to the mix picture taking, hovercraft racing, ice hockey playing, pearl collecting and code cracking...well, I've never encountered a game outside of the Zelda series that puts all of these parts together so seamlessly. Perhaps that's where the overall "Zelda" feel comes from. I have to also admit I found this game to be hilarious at parts. Jade eventually gets a partner named Double H (who can only be compared to "Toy Story"'s Buzz Lightyear). Double H does things by the book and gets very uncomfortable when rules are broken. Leave him and he'll cite his favorite espionage book by Clark and Peters, "Don't break up the team. Clark and Peters, page 484". Or, if he's in a hurry, it's "DBUTT". Enemies often provide humor, too. Many of the guards in this game are taken out by shooting one of Jade's Disk's at their oxygen tanks, dislodging it and causing panic amongst the other guards. Granted, you won't be on the floor laughing, but the humor involved made the game stand out even more in its level of uniqueness.

I am rarely one to ever comment on sound, but I have to with this game as the music is astounding. However, because I never write about music, I don't know how to write about it. All I can say is it worked to make me feel proud of my puzzle solving accomplishments and horribly sad to see the crimes of the protectors. Again, the music is "Zelda-esque" in quality.

The graphics in the game are beautiful. The land of Hillys is full of beautiful greens and blues showcasing white buildings with terra cotta rooftops. It had to have been inspired by something someone saw in Italy. It's very interesting to have this on the outside, then when entering the gloominess of many of the dungeons, be hit with more space age neons of blues, purples and pinks. Again, things that shouldn't go together in this game do.

I, simply, can't recommend this game enough. Novice gamers will love it. Fighting is not a difficult aspect of the game, but some of the puzzles are a bit on the tough side (which is what our Beyond Good and Evil Walkthrough and Strategy Guide is for, right?). Expert gamers will, most likely, fly through this game, but love every minute they spend doing it. For only $19.99, go out and get this game today. You deserve it.
