LB Review: 8.0

When you have your profile all set up, choose "Single Player" and then choose your difficulty. This guide is based on "Cowboy" difficulty, aka, "Normal".
This first level is a training level, go figure. You start with a simple six shooter revolver. Don't worry, you won't have this weapon for long. Move forward to the locked door and use your "Melee Attack" button to smash the lock. Go through. In the next car, you'll learn how to crouch using the "Crouch" button (click down on left control stick). Unfortunately this isn't a toggle. You have to hold it down to crouch and then release it to stand up. Go underneath each of the two cannons. In the next car, jump over the two turrets using your "Jump" button. Soon you'll get a cutscene of your very first undead, a Reaper. Aim at his head while he is still feeding and fire away using your "Shoot" button. If he rushes you and gets close to you, use your "Melee" button to whack him. Go to the door. In front of it is a Blood Canteen, aka a health pack. If you need it, you'll automatically pick it up.
In the next car you'll encounter two more Reapers. Once they are dead, pick up the Redeemer Pistol from the dying Darkwatch Agent. To fire rapid shots, press and hold the "Shoot" button. Your accuracy will go down as the gun fires upward, but once you learn how to control it, this gun will become like a best friend. There is a Blood Canteen on the left if you need it. Go through the next door.
Shoot and/or Melee the five Reapers. Now is a good time to get used to Reloading using the "Reload" button. Note your ammo supply in the upper right of your screen. Move toward the purple/blue light.
After the cutscene where you release Lazarus (nice work, geez) you'll be teamed up with Cassidy. Go forward up the ramp to the roof of the train. Kill a few Reapers and move forward. You'll be told by Cassidy that you are turning into a Vampire. Lucky for you, this means that you have a Blood Shield which, like a "Halo" shield, takes damage and recharges. The Blood Shield is the yellow bar above your red health bar in the upper left of your screen.
Move forward and Lazarus will appear with many Reapers. Take out the Reapers first, remembering if they get near you to use your Melee Attack. Then, focus on Lazarus. Fire a few shots at him and then back up. He'll instantly appear in front of you (as he can move very fast). Since you backed up, you have a nice close shot on him. Unload on him with your Redeemer by holding down the "Shoot" button. Repeat this process until Lazarus laughs at you and you get a cutscene.
Watch as the dust clouds appear which mark new Undead Ryders springing to life and fire at them until you get a second round with Lazarus...this time, he's flying. Still on Shadow, fire at Lazarus who is behind you. If he unleashes his spread fire balls, steer Shadow left or right to avoid them. Fire at him as quickly as possible. He's not hard to defeat, just keep your fire up and when his life bar reaches almost nothing he'll fly away. Note, also, that you can shoot his fire balls instead of dodging them.
You are now in a Church graveyard. You will be introduced to your Blood Vision, a sort of heightened awareness vision where objects of interest will glow (doors, exploding barrels, weapons, etc.), time will slow down a tad, and you'll be slightly zoomed in. To activate/deactivate your Blood Vision, click down on the Right Control Stick.
Directly in front of you is the Carbine, a rifle. Pick it up. You now have two weapons that you can toggle back and forth. Try this. Much like "Halo", you can only carry two weapons at a time. It's up to you to decide which weapons you like and which to carry. I'll offer my own advice, but that doesn't mean you have to follow it. In general, it's good to have one short range weapon (Redeemer, Shotgun) and one long range weapon (Carbine, Crossbow).
It is very easy to use the melee attack of your Carbine to one-hit kill almost all of the enemies on this level.
Make your way down the path and activate your Blood Vision to get an idea of what it does. You'll see two gates/doors that are highlighted and when some Reapers enter the graveyard you'll see them glow. Start killing the reapers with or without your Blood Vision. In front of the gate you'll pick up some Dynamite which you can throw like a grenade using your "Throw" button. To get through the gate, use a Melee attack on it to break open the lock.
Fight your way through the graveyard and you'll soon encounter some Gunslingers, enemies with pistols. Soon thereafter, next to a gravestone, you'll find the Crossbow with exploding ammo. This is one of my favorite weapons. It is good at long ranges and if you hit your target it'll stick in and then explode, thus killing the enemy. I recommend trading in your Carbine for the Crossbow.
Continue fighting through the graveyard and then fight in the area around the Church. Soon you'll encounter you very first Mark of Evil. This tree trunk looking mark will rise from the ground. As long as the Mark of Evil is there, enemies will continue to respawn. Therefore, you must destroy the Mark of Evil. When you do, all enemies will be destroyed. It has its own life bar. I recommend running directly up to it with a full Redeemer and then letting loose on it. It will be destroyed quickly. Next, you'll see another Mark of Evil appear at the top of the cliff side to the left of the Church (if facing the Church). Again, simply take aim at it with your Redeemer and fire at it until it is destroyed.

In the arena you'll learn that you can Double Jump. This is quite a jump which will span great distances. You can cancel your jump in the air by hitting your "Interact" button. There are three progressively higher ledges in this arena. There is various ammo and weaponry on these ledges. To see them more clearly, use your Blood Vision.
At first, stay on the ground floor and kill the waves of Reapers. When you get the quick cutscene you'll have to face off against three Banshees. Don't let them scare you. They are relatively easy to kill, especially if you let them get close to you. Their purple attack is easy to dodge or you can shoot the purple balls. At this point, you probably haven't used your Shotgun much. Now is the time to pull it out (it's not necessary but does make life easier).
If you want to go to a higher level, go ahead and jump up there. Otherwise, I recommend staying on the ground floor and letting the Banshees come to you. When the first one does, get right up in her face and blast the Shotgun at her. If you can get head shots it'll make this fight go much quicker. Do this until she dies. Next, you'll have to face off with two of them simultaneously. Just keep on the move and blast when you can. Alternatively, you may want to try jumping up to the upper ledge and taking refuge in one of the alcoves. This way you know that the Banshees can only come from the front. When the three of them are dead you'll see a gate open. Kill the two Gunslingers who enter. Before you go through the gate, jump up to each of the levels in the arena and gather ammo. If you want a Crossbow there is one in the arena, otherwise, stick with your Shotgun. Go through the gate and continue along the path killing the Banshee as you go.
In the next area fight through the first graveyard, through the chasm, and then at the next graveyard fight your way through and head up to the cross on the hill (there is ample Dynamite on the left if you want it). This is the first time you get to decide whether to be Good or Evil. It really doesn't have any effect on the game itself (other than you'll fill up your "Good" special powers before you "Evil" special powers or vice-versa) and you'll have ample opportunities to fill up both your Good and Evil special powers. If you choose Good, you'll get "Silver Bullet", which when activated enhances your shooting weapons. If you choose Evil, you'll get "Blood Frenzy" which enhances your melee attacks. I suggest selecting "Good". Silver Bullet comes in handy in various situations later, especially if you are more of a shooter than a melee-er. However, you can work on that power later, if you so choose.
Now that you have a special power you'll see a new bar coming down vertically from your health meter, the Blood Gauge. This is the special power bar. You fill up the bar by collecting Blood Clouds (the red blobs left over after killing enemies). When the meter if full you can activate your special power. When you do, watch the circle icon in the upper left of your screen. You'll see blue or red (good or evil) bars that will tick off. This is the time you have remaining on your special power.
Back to the action, go ahead and use your special power, clearing the area of enemies. Next, you'll face off against three Banshees...first one and then two. Take out the one using your normal powers and then, if you chose Silver Bullet (like I suggested), activate it and lay into the pair of Banshees with your Redeemer. You'll see how quickly they'll go down with your special power activated. Continue to clear the area of enemies and you'll soon encounter an Oozer, the big fat guy with the two swords. Lay into him with your Redeemer at close range. NOTE: If you choose Evil, you'll face three Oozers and one Banshee.
After the cutscene where Cassidy is killed by Lazarus you'll get a Blood Judgement with Cassidy's soul. Choose the opposite of what you chose in the first Blood Judgement. If you originally chose Evil and then choose Evil again, your Blood Gauge will only be half-full. However, if you choose the opposite of what you first chose, you'll get a new power (either Silver Bullet or Blood Frenzy).
If you're following along, so far you have gained Silver Bullet and Blood Frenzy. Upon starting back up, kill the Reapers. If you still have a Shotgun/Redeemer combo you I suggest you trade in your Shotgun for the Carbine that is in this first room. If you kept the Crossbow, then you're good to go.
Find the closed wooden door. Face it. To the left of it is an explosive Plunger. If you can't find it, use your Blood Vision. Activate the plunger to blow open the door. Follow the path and Lazarus will show you your first Tainted Victim. When you find a Tainted Victim, you can choose to be Good or Evil. Doing so will slightly fill up either your Good or Evil meter at the bottom left of the screen. It doesn't matter which you choose. I do suggest, however, that you fill up one before filling up the other. That is, keep filling up your Good until you get a new power and then work on the next power. You really don't want to split the Tainted Victims up, doing Good one time and Evil the next as it'll take a long time to fill up either meter that way.
Go forward and the door will explode allowing you through. To the left is the Tainted Victim. I chose Good and will continue to choose Good until I fill up the meter. Go forward along the curvy hallway and a hole will bust open in the ceiling. Kill the Reapers and then jump up there for a Tainted Victim. Continue along and you'll see the Dual Pistols. I suggest you pass over these guns unless you really like them.
You'll next get a cutscene showing you a Mark of Evil that has appeared in the cave below. Drop down, ignore any enemies, run up to it and lay into it with your Redeemer. It'll soon be destroyed killing everything else in the cave. Head back up to the bridge and double Jump the gap to the other side. Drop down the hole.
In this next room with the large water container and gears, kill the Reapers and then the Gunslingers on the bridge to your right. Before you head up to the bridge, shoot the sealed cave to your left to reveal a Tainted Victim. Then, head up to the bridge, activate the Plunger, kill the Reapers that attack, and go through the now open door below. Go through the curvy hall and you'll reach a fire. To the right is a small tunnel (there is a lantern there). Crouch and go through the tunnel. If you want a Shotgun, there is one at the front of this tunnel, but you're going to want the Carbine for the upcoming Keggers.
On the other side you'll face off with your first Keggers. These are undead who are carrying barrels of TNT. Aim for the TNT to destroy them. Once they are cleared, look up to the left and right ledges to locate a Gunslinger on each side. Go up the ramp to the ledge on the left and then double Jump across to the next ledge. Look back across and up, kill the Gunslinger, and then double Jump to this ledge. Before Jumping across the gap in the bridge, head right into the cave, fight the enemies, and find a Tainted Victim. Then, Jump the gap of the bridge and find the Plunger to the left of the bridge, before the cave. Activate it and go through the blasted door.
I'm making this a separate heading because this is the first area where I had difficulty, dying several times. Take out the two Reapers. If you don't have a Crossbow, grab the Carbine at the corner before you look out over this area. Kill the two Riflemen on the central tower using your Blood Vision to highlight them. At this point, it is to your benefit to locate each of the three Plungers. There is one in the upper shack on the left (the shack with the stairs leading up to it). There is one directly across from you that you can reach using the central tower. The third one you can spy by looking down and to the right, outside of the shack on the ground floor. If you don't see them, try using your Blood Vision.
In this area there are many enemies: Riflemen, Reapers, Gunslingers, and Banshees. Your best bet is to ignore as many enemies as possible and focus on getting to the plungers. Let's get this show on the road. Like I said before, kill the two Riflemen on the central tower. Double jump to the tower and then jump across to the shack on the left. Kill the Rifleman if he is here and hit the first Plunger. Jump onto the roof of the shack and look to the left wall to find the second Plunger sitting on a platform. You can either jump directly to the Plunger or jump to the cave/tunnel to the left and follow the cave around to it. Either way, you'll want to explore the cave behind the Plunger (you'll have to jump up through a hole in the ceiling if you jumped directly to the platform) to find a Tainted Victim. All you have left is the third Plunger on the ground floor, outside a shack. Drop down to the ground floor and hit the Plunger. Before you go through the passageway that you blew up, find the alcove on the ground floor that contains another Tainted Victim. Then, enter the passageway, kill anybody you need to and run for the wooden doors.
Follow the mineshaft killing as you turn the corner. Take out the Keggers and find the side path to the left for a Tainted Victim. Continue along, grab some Dynamite and blast through the blocked passageway (or you can just shoot it). Move forward taking out the Keggers and you'll soon get to a large cavern. While overlooking the cavern from your perch, start chucking Dynamite down into the cavern to destroy the many Reapers and Gunslingers (you can run back and grab more Dynamite if you want). Pick off any remaining enemies. When it's clear, drop down but be careful not to drop through the holes in the floor. Head to the left of the cavern to find a Tainted Victim. There is also a Shotgun and a Carbine in the area if you want them. After that, drop down through any of the holes in the floor and then drop down the deep hole. Go forward and you'll get to another cavern.
After the cutscene you'll be facing an Oozer across from you and you'll have a Mark of Evil to contend with. It is below you. Ignore the Oozer and drop several sticks of Dynamite down at the Mark of Evil and then finish it off with your Redeemer. When it's destroyed, all of the enemies will die. Go through the next passageway, kill the Reapers and slide down the next hole.
After the cutscene where you meet Cassidy's ghost you'll be outside of the gated Darkwatch Outpost. In front of you is the Range Rifle, aka Sniper Rifle. While equipped, you can zoom in using your "Blood Vision" button (click down on right control stick). There are two levels of zoom so click through and get used to it. Trade in your long range weapon for the Range Rifle. You should also have the Redeemer.
There are three Riflemen in front of you and one up on the wall. Pick them off. Work your way through the ruins and find the shack which contains a Tainted Victim, two Shotguns, and two Gunslingers (actually, they are Tainted Regulators, but for the purposes of this walkthrough, I'll stick to calling them Gunslingers). Go ahead and grab the Shotgun. Continue along the path, kill as you go, and you'll hear Cassidy's voice telling you to find a "Ghost Door" in the fort. Enter the fort and you'll get a cutscene and an Enemy Life Bar at the top of your screen. You have to take out all of the enemies in the area, which relates to the life bar so you can keep track of your progress.
The best way to clear this area of evil is to run around the ledge to the other side of where you entered and jump up to the uppermost platform at the base of the tower. Here, there is a Blood Canteen (health). From here you can easily pick off enemies below, chuck Dynamite down at them, and if any Reapers jump up, you can use a melee attack or your shotgun. When the enemy life meter gets to a half you'll get a checkpoint and Banshees will emerge. At this point, drop down and take cover in a shack putting your back into a corner. From this protected position you can keep an eye on both doors. Use your Shotgun on the Banshees. If you get very close you can do a one-shot head shot to kill them. Also, be aware of any other incoming enemies. There is a Blood Canteen in the shack if you need it. Also, you can use your Silver Bullet power if you are being overrun. When the area is clear go through the green ghost door.
NOTE: This is a PS2-specific level.

Now on horseback shoot the first few Undead Ryders. You'll get a cutscene showing a Darkwatch Train. The train has been taken over by enemies. First, avoid and/or shoot the barrels while taking out the Undead Ryders. When the train gets its own life bar you need to push forward to speed up in order to catch up with the train. While doing so, shoot the exploding barrels coming off of the back. When you approach the train, first shoot the coupling connecting the engine from the car behind it. Then, ride to both sides of the engine and fire at the train. Concentrate first on shooting the turret guns. Note that your reticle (crosshair) will turn red when you're over an area that can be shot. Shoot each part of the engine until it explodes.
