Ghost Collectibles will increase your character's spiritual meter, whereas Host Collectibles will unlock various multiplayer levels and characters. If you miss a Host or Ghost Collectible, you can reload any completed level and play through it again to locate these items. If you play with a new file, all Ghost Collectibles will be available to you, but Host Collectibles you've already gathered will no longer be there, as they've already been counted toward your multiplayer bonuses.
This guide does not cover multiplayer aspects of the game, as multiplayer games are fairly straight forward, and are defined by how you and your friends play them. However, with that being said, here are the multiplayer bonuses unlocked by the Host Collectibles gathered in the single player game.

While playing the game, press "down" on your control pad to see what Host and Ghost Collectibles you have gathered.
From either the Start Menu, or your in-game Pause Menu, select "Options" to access a diagram that defines your controls. At the beginning of the game you are asked to select your controller configuration from the two options provided (Wraith or Shade). The two controller options only have to do with the definition of the two control sticks, while all buttons remain the same. We opted for the "Shade" option, as it was closest to traditional dual control stick gameplay. You may switch these controller options at any point in the game. You can also play around with the Advanced Controller Configuration if you care to do so. We left the Advanced Controller Config alone as "Invert" was the default option.
Once the first level comes to an end, you will find yourself in ghost form. There will be a spiritual meter located in the lower left hand corner of your screen. This meter will constantly drain. If it runs out, your game will be over. To prevent it from running out, suck the life out of surrounding plants, and possess possessable objects. Once you dispossesss from those objects, your spiritual meter will receive a boost.
You should also note that the world around you moves very, very slow when you are a ghost. Learn to use this to your advantage (this will be explained more in the walkthrough).
When you possess an object you take on the health of that object (your host). Depending on the situation, if your host dies, the game may or may not come to an end. Sometimes you need specific hosts to make it through certain areas. If that host dies, your game will be over. However, sometimes you can possess one of many hosts to get through an area. If that's the case, you'll see your host body go down, but your ghost will still be alive and well. Look around for another host and keep going.
Finally, to clear up any initial confusion, remember that only your ghost can possess objects. In other words, if you are currently within a host, you must "Dispossesss" before you can "Possess" another host. Also, if you're looking to possess an object, you have to "Look" at that object (look in the direction of it then hit "A" when you get the eye icon) before you can possess it.
