Welcome to Lunabean's Genji: Dawn of the Samurai Walkthrough and Strategy Guide. This guide will walk you through the game, from beginning to end, telling you where to go and how to best defeat the game's many bosses. It will also point out locations of the most important of all items, weapons and armor. I play through the game primarily as Benkei, as his power is just too great to go unused. However, the guide will still do the job if you decide to play as Yosh, instead. Nothing changes between one character and the other, outside of battle technique. With that being said, please enjoy this rather short Samurai adventure and walkthrough.

Your controls are determined by the setting you choose in your "Button Configuration" menu, accessed by going into "Settings" from the Start Menu. I went with "Type A", and will sometimes refer to it as the "default". Also, I will refer to buttons by their action instead of their button name. If I tell to hit your "Investigate" button, and you don't know which button that is, check your "Button Configuration" menu to figure it out.
In addition to your normal controls, take note of the following:
X + X = Jump higher off walls (Yosh only)
X + Square = Jump then kick the enemy in the head
"Normal Attack" button pressed repeatedly will produce combos (although if Benkei has a club, he will not be able to initiate a combo until his third attack.
Both "Normal" and "Special" attacks can change based on what direction you're pushing the control stick. Experiment with this. Also note, "Special" attacks vary (or are increased) by holding "Block" or "Jump" while performing them.
X + "Block" will produce an extra special defense.
All other control issues are brought up in the guide, when you come to them.
Kamui is key to getting through this game, particularly when it comes to defeating bosses. To use it, make sure your Kamui meter is full. Your Kamui meter is the bottom blue meter, that increases with your enemy hits. When it's full, the blue orb at the base of the meter will glow pink. When it's glowing, hit "L1" (default) to activate Kamui. Once in Kamui mode, watch the feet of your character and wait for the "Square" prompt (default). As soon as you see it, tap your "Square" button. Repeat the "Square" taps for as long as you receive the prompts. Kamui takes practice, but, once you get it, you're good to go.
Amahagane play a role in almost every aspect of this game. Amahagane are "mystical jewels bestowed upon the people by Shukenten". You will find yourself fighting bosses for their Amahaganes. If your controller begins vibrating, chances are an Amahagane is nearby. To bring it out, launch Kamui and you'll see the Amahagane's shell. Hit it with your sword to release the Amahagane, then collect it.
What do you do with your collected Amahagane? You build up your character. Yes, you will "level up" naturally, as you defeat enemies. However, for an extra boost, go into the "Amahagane" section in your Pause Menu, and you'll find that you can assign Amahagane to "Health", "Attack" or "Defense". One you fill a pod, you'll get an increase in the appropriate field. The secret to using this to your advantage is to use the "Health" upgrade when you need health, as, upon increasing your health, your health meter will completely refill. I often used Amahagane to level up my health while in the middle of boss fights.

Buy Items and Accessories from the Merchant/Salesman (first found on the Main Road) and buy Weapons and Armor from the Swordsmith (first found in a hut atop the Maid Road). Read about Items and Accessories to find out how you can best use them, particularly when you begin fighting Fire, Ice, Poison and Electric Bosses. Always keep a Talisman of Protection nearby, as it will save you from burning, freezing, poisoning and paralysis. Also, I suggest always keeping a stock of herbs and potions. It's just the smart way to play.
Finally, if you can afford the most expensive weapon or armor, sell what you currently have and buy it. There's no point in keeping all of your weapons on your first play through, and there's no point in playing with weak armor or weaponry. On your second play through you will get a Weapon's List, which asks you to collect every item in the game. However, even then, you don't have to keep what you've collected (but be sure to buy everything the Swordsmith has, or it won't register in your List).
