In "God of War" you play as Kratos, an ex-Spartan warrior who makes a pact with the Greek God of War, Ares, to become the most powerful mortal warrior (as opposed to a god). Without ruining anything, Ares betrays Kratos and it becomes your goal to hunt down and destroy Ares. Doing so will require you to venture to magnificent classic Greek settings and face off against some of the most ruthless classic monsters such as Gorgons (Medusa), Minotaurs, Harpies. You'll also have to do a fair amount of puzzle solving and exploring. Thank goodness you have this Lunabean guide!
Because "God of War" is a PS2 exclusive game, this guide uses specific PS2 buttons. For example, "Push your "O" button," or "Hold your "Triangle" button. To get a list of your controls go to your "Select" menu and choose "Options" > "Controller Display".

When you kill enemies you'll notice that a hit count or combo count starts in the lower right of the screen. Killing enemies fills your Rage of the Gods meter (the helmet in the lower right of the screen). Rage of the Gods becomes available to you after you level up your Blades of Chaos to level 2. To activate it, click down on L3 and R3 (click down on the control sticks) simultaneously. When in Rage of the Gods mode you take less damage and can do severe damage to enemies. Be sure to hold it for special occasions. To refill your meter faster, watch your hit count and try to string attacks together. Using magic like Poseidon's Rage or Army of Hades helps the hit count as well.
Upgrading your Health and Magic meter
The red bar is your Health and the blue bar your magic. Find six Gorgon Eyes (scattered throughout the game in various treasure chests) to increase your health meter and six Phoenix Feathers to increase your magic meter. There is also a special way to increase your meter and it has to do with the Muse Keys. Search this document for "Muse Key" or "Chamber of the Gods" if you want to find out more. If you follow this guide you will max out both your health and your magic meters.
Red, Green, and Blue Orbs
Every time you kill an enemy, break a crate/box/coffin/barrel, or open a treasure chest you'll receive either Red, Green, or Blue Orbs. Red Orbs can be spent on weapon and magic upgrades. Green Orbs refill your health meter. Blue orbs refill your magic meter.
Treasure chests, or simply, chests, contain either Orbs, Phoenix Feathers, or Gorgon Eyes. There are many chests which alternate between green and blue. Open the chest when it's green to get Green Orbs, when it's blue to get Blue Orbs.
When fighting certain enemies, if you daze them, you'll be able to enter a "mini-game". While that name is misleading it basically means you can do a finishing move or a very damaging attack by following the on screen prompts.
For example, if you daze a Minotaur you'll get a "Circle" button icon on the screen, usually above the head of the enemy. Push the "Circle" button to initiate the mini-game. In the case of the Minotaur you have to rapidly tap the "Circle" button to do a finishing move which gives you Green Orbs. For a Gorgon (Medusa) you'll have to follow the on screen prompts telling you which way to rotate your control stick.
Mini-games are useful but are sometimes unnecessary. If you are fine on health then you may as well skip the mini-game with the Minotaur as you will get Red Orbs for killing him normally. Gorgons give off Blue Orbs if you use the mini-game on them. Other enemies give off more Red Orbs than usual if you use a mini-game on them.
As a general rule it's better to just go ahead and do a mini-game when you have the chance. They're fun and add to the game.
Weapons and Magic
"God of War" has some of the better weapons and special powers (magic) of any game in its genre. There are many fighting styles and you need to become comfortable performing attacks and combos that you find to be effective. This guide contains recommendations and you can view the "Enemies" section below to get a general idea of what works best for what enemy. As you upgrade your weapons and magic be sure to check out any new combos that have become available.
Blades of Chaos - Your default weapon: Dual-wielded swords attached to chains on your arms. Good for general purpose attacking, attacking from a distance and needed to break shields (Plume of Prometheus attack). Good attacks include Valor of Hercules, Rising Helios, Lance of the Furies, Rising Helios, and Plume of Prometheus. Upgrading will give you additional combos and make your attacks more powerful.
Poseidon's Rage - Your first magic ability. It sends out a shock wave of electricity. As you upgrade it you can make it go longer and spread it out by tapping the "Circle" button. It's a good attack if there are a lot of enemies gathered near each other. This is good attack to use to get your hit meter in the bottom right of the screen to increase so that you get bonuses and therefore more quickly fill up your Rage of the Gods Meter.
Medusa's Gaze - After you defeat Medusa, you'll gain the ability to freeze enemies in stone. This is particularly helpful for Minotaurs. Upgrading will get you the ability to insta-freeze and to do a 360 degree freeze.
Zeus' Fury - This ability allows you to throw lightning bolts at far away enemies. Very useful against Archers. Upgrading will allow a charged bolt (hold "Triangle") and will make reloading faster.
Blade of Artemis - Formerly Artemis' sword, it was used to slay a Titan. It is a huge sword that Kratos wields with both hands. It does good damage but is slower than the Blades of Chaos and to use it you must be close to the enemy. Upgrading will make the sword more powerful. You don't receive this sword until later in the game.
Army of Hades - A great attack that uses souls from Hades to attack multiple enemies. The souls are ghost heads that float through the air and attack any enemies in sight for a small amount of time. This attack is great for some of the final bosses and in any room that is crowded with enemies.

Undead - Your general all-purpose skeleton soldier. They get better, stronger, and more aggressive as the game goes along. They are also Archers. There is no good or bad way to kill basic Undead. Use what you like.
Minotaur - Half bull, half man. If you kill them using the mini-game you'll get Green Orbs (health). They are easy to freeze and shatter with Medusa's Gaze.
Cyclops - Using your Blades of Chaos, when prompted, hit the correct button to strike its eye. After three or four direct hits to the eye they'll go down.
Gorgons - Medusa is a Gorgon and all Gorgons have the power to freeze enemies. If you get frozen, shake your control stick back and forth to break out of the stone. If you get hit while frozen, you'll shatter and die. To avoid being frozen stay out of a Gorgon's gaze by rolling or attacking. When prompted, enter the mini-game to rip off its head. You'll get Blue Orbs (magic) for doing so.
Harpies - Annoying little creatures. They are easy to kill so just use whatever you like. Particularly entertaining is hitting your "Circle" button while near a Harpy in order to tear off its wings and instantly kill it.
Wraiths - Basically Undead elite. These guys will spin from the ground a do a little damage to you. Susceptible to Medusa's Gaze but use whatever you'd like on them.
Sirens - When in the Desert of Lost Souls you'll have to deal with some Sirens. They are pesky enemies. If you have trouble seeing them, they are shadows or silhouettes, so look for a dark shadow floating by. Kill them in whatever manner you'd like.
Centaurs - Half man, half horse. Nothing special here. Use whatever you'd like.
Cerberus - When fighting Cerberus dogs it is your top priority to kill off any puppies that the Cerberus vomits. If you let the puppies survive they'll quickly grow into full fledged Cerberus' of their own and you'll have a mess on your hands. The puppies are easy to kill. Kill a round of them and then attack Cerberus then be on the lookout for more puppies.
Satyrs - Half goat, half man, and very skilled fighters. They are
analogous to Darth Maul in Star Wars games: Double bladed weapon and
highly mobile. Anyway, use your Block to keep them at bay and attack
away. Using magic on them is a good idea; either Army of Hades or
