GTA: SA Strategy Guide Introduction

How We Wrote the Guide

Welcome to Lunabean.com's Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas Walkthrough and Strategy Guide. This guide will walk you through the missions of the game. Because "GTA" games are so incredibly open in their play, we have organized it first based on location, then based on the mission. So, if you're looking for "C" Icon Mission Help, make sure you are looking at the correct section of the guide (is it a "C" mission in Los Santos, San Fierro or Las Venturas?), then look for the "C" Icon Mission header. Here you will find your mission, in the order that it appears in relation to the other "C" missions. The only exception to this is at the very beginning of the game, where you have to follow missions in a specific order to get the ball rolling. You will find help for these missions in the "Beginning Missions" section in Los Santos.

Also, you should note there are some "crossover missions". Because of this, we have listed some missions twice. However, even with that being said, your definition of a crossover mission may be different from ours. If you can't find a mission that's either at the beginning or end of your time in a specific section, look at the section you were in previously, as it very well could be there. Again, it's a very open game. We have included every mission involved in the storyline, but because of the openness, you may have to do a little searching for some of these crossover missions.

You should note that when we put this guide together, we played through each mission indicator as far as we could go before going to the next one. In other words, we only left mission groups if the mission icon disappeared on us. We try to let you know what needed to happed to unlock more missions in that group, or what happened to unlock the group as a whole. This becomes more clear in the later missions, where things become a bit scattered. Point being, read the guide and play the game. If you see a mission that hasn't unlocked for you yet, it means you're not there yet, plain and simple.

Speaking of not being there yet, we're anticipating a lot of, "How and when do I get to fly planes?". You get to fly planes when you accomplish the "Verdant Meadows" mission in Las Venturas. Also, if you can't get to San Fierro or Las Venturas, you're not there yet. Missions will unlock allowing you to get to these places. Be patient and play the game.

Map

Sometimes people think they are missing an indicator. If you think this is happening to you, first, jump out of your vehicle so you can intercept any phone call coming your way. Sometimes new indicators come once you've answered your phone. You can only answer your phone outside your car. If this fails, bring up your map. While we loved the game, the map is crappy (or, more accurately, the icons are crappy), but it does have one nice feature: The Legend. Select your map and follow the instructions to bring up the Legend. Sometimes icons are so far away, your radar doesn't show them, but if you pull up your Legend and you see there's a "CJ" mission out there, you know what you're looking for. Also, the game comes up with some pretty bizarre icons which you might not know are mission indicators, so the Legend helps sort that out.

The Legend also does a good job of helping you if you get confused during a mission. It will tell you that the yellow blip is your destination, the red blip indicates enemies, etc., etc. Our guide also tells you these things, but it's good to know this on your own. You will learn to love the yellow blip, hate the red blip, and feel a various range of emotions toward the blue, green, and purple blips.

While we're telling you about the map, we feel the need to mention a great addition to the "GTA" map, and that's the ability you have to mark the map with your own indicator. Put the cursor where you want it and hit "O" (on the PS2, check the legend for details on other systems). This will place a single mark on your map, which will show up on your radar. Hit "O" again to make it disappear. This was particularly helpful to us when we went to various Ammu-Nations, or, when we had a good distance to go on a particular road, but we wanted to know where, exactly, we needed to make that right turn without having to pull up the large map. The marker was perfect for this.

Controls

We initially played this game on the PS2. When the Xbox and PC versions came out, we played the game on the Xbox and updated some of our specific PS2 controls with Xbox controls. If you're a PC gamer, your controls are up to you, depending upon how you play PC games. However, no matter what, your controls are provided to you in your pause menu. Hit "Start", then "Controller". You get a few controller options, but, most important, you will see your controls. With this being said, there are a few controller functions that should be mentioned. Those would be the drive by and the gang recruitment.

To perform a drive by, get a gun in your hands before you hop in the car (or boat, or whatever). In the car, hit "R2" or "L2" ("white" or "black" on the Xbox) to look right or left of the car. While keeping the button pressed, hit "O" ("B" on the Xbox). Drive bys are a good way to take out people while protecting yourself from fire. However, always watch your car. If it starts flaming hop out immediately as it's going to blow.

If you want to have a few gang members with you as you perform a drive by (or, in general), you have to first have Respect. Your Respect meter determines how many gang members you can have with you. Your respect meter fills up very slowly as you do certain missions. Later, in Los Santos, when you can wage gang wars, you can earn a good amount of respect by taking over rival gang territory. Also, clothes you wear can earn you respect. The key is green. When you have enough respect, go to your hood, or another turf that is green (if you don't understand that comment, you're not there yet). Find one of your boys (wearing green), target him like you would if you were going to shoot him, but, instead, press "Up" on your control pad. If you have enough Respect, the guy will join your gang. If you want your gang to disband, press "Down" on your control pad.

Your Meters

Another new addition to this game is the addition of meters. You have meters all over the place. However, they're really not that important when it comes to gameplay. The one meter that is most important is your health meter (red meter in the upper right hand corner of your screen). If you want to refill your health meter you have to either Save or you have to eat something. To eat something, go to one of many eateries in the area (look at your map's legend if you need to figure out where), enter the establishment, hop in the red marker and choose whatever it is you want to eat. Fill up your meter, and you're good to go. If you overeat, you'll puke. If you overeat regularly, you'll get fat. If you get fat, you'll tire out quickly, you'll move slow, and you won't be able to pull yourself up and over fences, ledges, etc. You'll also lose sex appeal, which means you won't get to date the ladies. This is not a good thing. I suggest only eating to refill your health meter, and when you're told you're hungry (you'll be alerted in the left corner of your screen when this happens).

If you want to gain muscle, you'll also need to eat. Eat a few meals, then go to one of the indicated gyms. Enter the gym and hop on whatever machine you want. Follow the on-screen instructions to build muscle. Do it until you're told you've worked out enough for the day. The next day, repeat. You do need to eat more often if you want to maintain your muscular physique...so, it's all up to you, really.

If you have muscles, your sex appeal meter will also be higher. Sex appeal is, again, something used to attract the ladies. There are three girls you have to date throughout the game. If they're not attracted to you, get your sex appeal meter up. Lose weight, gain muscle, pull up in a cool car, wear cool clothes, and so on. Also, a way to get your sex appeal meter up is to collect Oysters. We have not detailed Oyster locations in this guide, but there are 50 of them, and each one is located in a body of water (ocean, pond, pool, whatever). Look for them as an easy way to gain sex appeal.

Oddly enough, oyster collecting will also increase your lung capacity. The other way to increase your lung capacity is for you to dive underwater. Watch your health meter, let it almost run out, then surface. Do this three to five times for every lung capacity increase. You really only need a decent lung capacity for one mission, later in the game.

Saving

To save in this game you must run into your "home base", where you will find a "Save Disk". Run into the disk to save your game. In Los Santos your home base is the Johnson House. In San Fierro it's CJ's Garage. In Las Venturas, it's the old airport or the Casino. You can get more safe houses by purchasing various properties. If the property is a home of sorts, it will function as as a save. You'll learn to buy properties after a specific mission in the game. Once you get to that property mission, find "Properties for Sale" via your Map Legend, run into the icon outside of that for sale property, and hit "L1" ("L" on the Xbox) if you want to purchase it.

Note, you cannot save in the middle of a mission.

Also note, saving speeds up time six hours. Learn to use this for time dependant missions. Because it speeds up time, you will also lose your wanted level and completely regain your health by saving.

Wardrobe

You can buy clothes at Bincos (t-shirt icon), and, later in the game, other establishments (including "ZIP", the "GAP" rip off). Anything you buy at these stores can be worn immediately. If you want to change clothes, anything you buy will also appear in the closet of your various safe houses (save points). From your wardrobe you can put on, take off, or alter your wardrobe. Any earned clothing will appear here as well.

Tattoos and Barber Shops

You can get a variety of tattoos and hairstyles by going into either the Tattoo Parlor (tattoo icon) or the Barber Shop (scissors icon). These affect your sex appeal.

Gym

There are various gyms throughout the game. They are marked by a barbell icon. At the gym you can work out to gain muscle, lose fat, and improve your fighting skills. Gaining muscle has already been covered in the "Meters" section above. To lose weight, do the exercise bike. After you have gained enough muscle, you'll be asked if you want to challenge the boxer in the gym. Do so and you'll learn a new set of punching/kicking moves. These moves definitely take out enemies much quicker.

Using Weapons

To use a weapon, hold down "R1" to lock-on and then "O" to fire. On the Xbox, pull the R-trigger to target, then pull the L-trigger or hit "B" to fire. While targetting, you can cycle through targets, left or right, by using the "L2" and "R2" buttons ("black" or "white" on the Xbox). Get good at this. You'll need it later when starting gang wars.

The more you use a weapon the more skill you will gain on it and automatic upgrades will kick in. For example, as you use more and more Micro SMGs (Tec 9s and Uzis) you'll soon be able to walk while using them, then run, then you'll be able to use two at the same time, etc. It's different for each weapon. You can also upgrade your skill by going into the Ammu-Nation shooting range and participating in the challenges.

Wanted Level

Notice the star meter in the top right corner of your screen. This is your "Wanted Level" Meter. You get a wanted level by messing with cops. If the cops see you commit a crime, chances are you'll get a star. If you hit a cop car while driving, chances are you'll get a star. If you shoot a cop, you will get a star. If you carjack a cop, you will get a star.

When you have a wanted level, the cops are looking to take you in to jail. If they get their hands on you, that's where you're going. If you have a high wanted level, the cops are going to call in all of their forces, and they are going to try to kill you. So, the wanted level isn't a good thing (although it is a good time). Your wanted level will increase as you commit more crimes against the cops. Your wanted level will decrease if you lose the cops for a good amount of time or if you find one of many police badges hidden throughout the city. It will be eliminated completely if you find a Pay 'N' Spray garage (green paint can icon) and pull your vehicle into it. When you exit, your stars will be flashing. This is your probation period. If you commit one misstep while in this probation period, your wanted level will shoot right back up to where it was. So, be good. Also, you will lose your wanted level if you save.

Also there are certain military bases through the game. If you get too close one, you'll get an automatic five star rating.

If You Fail...

If you fail at the game of life, you will find yourself at the closest (most often) hospital. You lose all of your weapons and a bit of money every time you are hospitalized.

If you fail at evading the cops, you will be taken to the closest (most often) jail or police station. Again, you will lose all of your weapons and a bit of money every time you are arrested.

If you fail at a mission, you will be taken nowhere. You will be out in the middle of your mission, but your mission is over. You'll have to go to where you originally walked into that red marker to activate the mission.

Dying, being arrested and failing will bring all mission icons back to the map. Look at the Map Legend, figure out where you need to go, and start over.

Multiplayer

Yes, this game has some multiplayer functionality. First it comes in Free Roam mode, unlocked when you have two controllers plugged in and you run into the red multiplayer icon. Now, the red multiplayer icons aren't easy to find as they aren't indicated on your map. The first is at Denise's house (your first girlfriend). If you interested in where the icons can be found elsewhere, check out this page: http://hem.bredband.net/708145/2players.html.

You cannot do any missions while in multiplayer mode, so, in my opinion, it gets old rather fast. However, with that being said, plug in a second controller and hop into a bar (there's one on the opposite end of Grove Street). In the bar, approach the pool table for a great two player pool game. Good times.

Earning 100% Completion

Your reward for completing 100% of the game is that the Hydra (attack copter) and the Rhino (tank) will spawn outside of CJ's house in Los Santos and you'll earn $1 million.

What you need:
You need to complete all missions (story and side missions). This includes things like, Mt. Chilad Mountain Bike, Couriers, earning a Bronze medal or better at all four schools, Ammu-Nation challenges, etc. Basically, if there is a red marker and you can walk into it, you need to do it. You also need all safe houses to be purchased and you need to find all the oysters, horseshoes, spray tags, and snap shot locations.

You don't need:
You don't need to take over all the territories, get with all the girlfriends, have all your meters maxed out, get hi-scores in the arcades, do two-player missions, find all the flowers or find all the unique jumps.

Get gaming!

For now, the introduction is complete. This game is huge, and I'm sure we'll discover more things that belong in all portions of this guide. If that's the case, check out our GTA: SA Updates Page. Now, get gaming!
