2. Investigation - Doc's Diner

You will now be introduced to Carla and Tyler, two NYPD investigators. Often, you can switch between these two characters. Each has their own abilities, so sometimes Carla will be able to spot something Tyler cannot and vice versa. You know you can switch between them when you see an Icon in the upper right of your screen with the face of Tyler or Carla (depending on who you are at the time). When you start up, you'll see a "?" Action Icon. Hit it to get some background on Carla. Enter the diner.

You'll talk to Martin, the cop that found the body. Ask him what you like. You'll be told to interrogate Kate, the waitress. Before you talk to the waitress, go to the table beyond where the waitress is sitting. This is the table where Lucas was sitting. Investigate each of the items on the table, noting the book under the table: "The Tempest" by Shakespeare.

Sit down with the waitress and talk to her. Choose what you like. She'll tell you about the victim, John. If you didn't pay the bill earlier, she'll tell you so, if you did, she won't mention it. You ask her to come down to the station tomorrow to help you develop a profile of the killer.

Talk to Garret and Frank, the other two cops. Head into the bathroom. Tyler will be with you. Look at the blood on the floor. Check out the dead body. Enter the left stall and check out the blood on the floor. You'll tell Tyler to get Garret to analyze this blood, which is Lucas'.

In order to find the murder weapon, as Carla, go into the left stall and place yourself between the toilet paper dispenser and the door. You'll get an Action Icon to kneel down. Do so. You'll find the Knife (this is why you didn't get to see where Lucas hid it earlier). If the Knife is not here, then have Tyler look in the Trash can on the wall and you'll find the Knife inside.

Exit the bathroom and take a look at the Payphone. You'll ask Frank to verify all of the calls made from this phone. If you want, Carla and Tyler both will benefit from a little coffee behind the counter.

Switch to Tyler and go talk to Garret and Frank. Exit out the back door as Tyler. You'll see some footprints. Examine them. In front of you, on the fence between the sidewalk and the alley, is a piece of Bloody Clothing. Use your "Eye" Action Icon to view it. Head to the back of the alley and talk to the Bum. He won't help you.

Switch to Carla and talk to the Bum. Choose "Seen Anything" and then "You" to get some more info. Talk to Tyler and choose "Leave", then "Confirm". Go to the yellow car and enter it to leave.

3. The Day After - Lucas' Apartment

You begin in your apartment. Get up and close the window. Go over to your computer desk. Pick up the picture of your dead parents. Get onto the computer and read the "Web". Here you can read about "Video Games Notch up New Victims," "The Weather," and "Pakistan: The Ultimatum Ends Today." All of these are simply environmental features meant to draw you into the game more.

Go to your bed by the night stand. You'll have four Action Icons. First, make the bed (pull up the covers). Then select the "Medic/Cross" icon to take some aspirin. Then look at the book, a Nietzsche classic: "Thus Spoke Zarathustra". If you took any Philosophy and/or English courses in college you're sure to have come upon this book. Turn on the clock radio if you want. Exit your bedroom via the door.

You'll hear the phone ringing. Pick it up. It's Markus, your brother. You tell him that you are in trouble and he agrees to meet you in the park. If you don't get to the phone in time, or the phone isn't ringing for you, simply pick up the phone and you'll call Markus, resulting in the same conversation. Listen to the answering machine messages. It's Tiffany. Don't worry about that.

Sometime during your exploration of your apartment you'll see a vision of a policeman knocking on your door. This flash of a vision will come true so you better get your apartment ready for a policeman to enter. You'll get an Action Sequence. Use your analog sticks to match the sequence on the screen. If you succeed in matching the pattern, you'll see the pieces of evidence that the cop will look for when he's in the apartment. If you fail in matching the pattern, you won't see this clue as to what to hide.

Anyway, up until the point where you get this vision, feel free to explore your apartment. Open the fridge and drink some milk. Grab some water from the sink. Notice your Apartment Key sitting on the kitchen table.

After the vision of the cop knocking on the door you'll have a short amount of time before the cop will arrive. You've already made your bed so as to cover the bloody sheets. So, that's out of the way. You now need to locate the bloody shirt on the floor, next to the column near the living room. When you look at it you'll get a vision of the murder and then will be able to pick it up. Do so and bring it into the bathroom (door to the left of the front door if facing the front door). Place the bloody shirt into the washing machine.

If the cop has yet to arrive, go ahead and hop into the shower. Then, open the medicine cabinet and use the first aid to wrap up your arms. You can now put clothes on, seeing as you won't get them bloody. Shut the medicine cabinet (did it scare you?). Again, if the cop isn't at the door yet, head on over to your bedroom and go to the wardrobe (closet), open it, and put on some clothes.

When the cop arrives you'll get a timer (the horizontal bar at the top of your screen). You should have done everything necessary by now, but for the sake of quick review, the two things you need to do are to make your bed to hide the bloody sheets and to hide the bloody shirt on the floor by putting it into the washing machine in the bathroom. You'll have ample time to do this is you haven't yet.

So, when the apartment is cleaned up, go grab the Apartment Key from the kitchen table and open the front door. The first answer doesn't matter, but when the cop asks if it's OK to look around your apartment, say, "Yes" so as not to attract Suspicion. Even fully bandaged and clothed, the cop will ask what happened to your wrist. He'll take a look around your apartment and then leave.

At this point, if there is anything else you want to do in the apartment, feel free. I suggest you open the kitchen cabinets to find a Bonus. Otherwise, head out the front door to end the chapter.

4. Confession - The Park

At this point you can choose whether you want to play this chapter, or the next one. I'll just be doing these in the order they are presented, but it's fine if you want to do Carla's chapter first and then this one.

Go forward along the path. Take note of the creepily realistic movement of the two kids playing (hey, it impressed me). Before you go up to the man to the left of the statue, take the right path around to find a Bonus. Then, go up to the man to the left of the statue. This is your brother, Markus. He is a priest. You will be Markus, asking questions of Lucas (later in the conversation, you'll be Lucas). It doesn't matter if you're rough or gentle with him. The result will be the same. When Markus offers Lucas the Cross, take it. This is an Extra Life.

After the conversation, you'll see a vision of a kid falling through ice. There will also be police. At this point, you can simply turn around, but what kind of moral choice would that be? Instead, run forward and you'll automatically dive into the water. Follow the on-screen instructions to dive down and grab the kid. Return to the surface and get out of the water. At this point, the police will be there. The only way the police will let you go is to save the kid by doing CPR on him.

Kneel down next to the kid. First, listen for a heartbeat. Then, you'll automatically start performing CPR. The key here is to wait until each count of 1-2-3, and then hit the Action Icon to do a compression. Then, wait for another 1-2-3 count and repeat. Do this until you save the kid. It is now that you realize that the cop on the scene is Martin, from the Diner. He'll mysteriously let you go.

5. Police Work - Police Station

You are Carla. You are at the Police Station. Go past Doug at the desk and go up either staircase and through the door at the top. Your office is in the back right corner. Head there. As you near your office, Jeffrey will talk to you asking you when Tyler will pay him back his $100. You brush him off.

Go to enter your office. Garret will catch you before you enter telling you there are some results from the crime scene. Now, enter your office. Grab some water from the water cooler to raise your Mental State. Then head to the phone on the desk in front of you. This is your desk. Tyler's is to the right. Use the phone to call Tyler.

Sit down at your desk. Open the drawer for a Bonus. Use your computer. Read the third email for a reference to "Kirsten". Then, scroll over to the NY Police Data Base (the folder icon). Access it and then move your Left Analog stick up or down to enter "Kirsten". You'll discover that the file is Classified. Get up from the computer and play with the Yo-Yo if you like. It'll simply give you a Mental State boost. (If you haven't yet called Tyler, do so).

Notice that you can switch to Tyler. Do so. You are now Tyler, in Tyler's apartment. Get up. Walk around to the other side of the bed where your girlfriend, Sam, is sleeping. Choose the "?" Icon to hear about the crazy little doll on the night stand, Tyler's favorite character from a video game. Then, look at Sam. You'll now see a Heart Icon. Choose it to make a little love.

You'll be Carla again. However, you can switch to Tyler to hear some moaning and a Teddy Pendergrass song, "Love T.K.O.". Anyway, you can watch this as long as you want. To get it to stop, switch back to Carla and use the phone to call Tyler and interrupt him. Switch back to Tyler and take a shower. Look in the mirror for a boost. Then, take a pee which will also give you a boost and let you find a Bonus.

Go back to the bedroom and put on some clothes. Exit the bedroom and go up to Sam. You'll see the "Eye" icon. Choose it to note that Sam looks bothered. Drink some coffee to initiate a conversation with Sam. You can choose to be rude to her or to reassure her. If you are rude, you'll lose Mental State points, so be nice. If you want some more points, turn on some music at the record player. When you're ready to leave, grab your coat by the door. Then, go over to Sam and kiss her goodbye. Exit your apartment.

You'll start back up, still as Tyler, in the Police station. Go to the right of the stairwell to find a Bonus. Head to Carla's office. On the way, you'll be stopped by Jeffrey. No matter what you choose here, you'll end up challenging Jeffrey to a Basketball game. Enter Carla's office. Carla will leave to talk to Garret. You need to meet up with her. First, though, check your computer for an email from Sam. Hang up your coat. Exit the office and meet up with Carla who is sitting on Garret's desk, in the middle of the room.

Garret will ask what you want to start with. Depending on what you discovered in the Diner, you may have different choices here. Again, it doesn't matter what you choose. Just note that there will be an email waiting for you the next time you are Carla and have access to your office. After the conversation, the chapter will end.

6. Alternate Reality - Naser and Jones Bank

Again, you can choose from three different chapters at this point. I'll just be going in order. If you skipped around, simply find the correct chapter in the guide and follow it.

You start out as Lucas in the bathroom. There is a Bonus between the row of stalls. Be a good citizen and wash your hands before leaving. When you exit the bathroom, you'll see a small map appear in the upper left of the screen. You are Blue. You need to get to Red. Before you do this, you may want to grab the Bonus in the top middle set of cubicles (according to your map). Enter your office, the Red dot.

Sit down at your computer. Get ready, there is an Action Sequence about to start. If you succeed, you'll hear what your co-worker thinks of you. If you fail, you don't. Open the two drawers of your desk. In one is an Extra Life. In the other is a picture of you and Tiffany. Access your computer and then answer the phone when it rings. It's Tiffany. She asks if she can stop by your apartment. It doesn't matter what you say as she'll be coming by no matter what. Still, if you want to gain some Mental Health, choose "Yes".

Another action sequence will follow of you predicting a spilled coffee cup. Access your computer and you'll see "Murderer" appear on the screen. Access your computer again and your co-worker will knock over the coffee cup. You'll then be told that one of the workstations is down and you have to go fix it.

Get up and leave your office. You'll see the map again. Go to the red dot. On the way there you'll see a very weird vision of insects. Fix the computer and then get ready for a lengthy Action Sequence. You'll see your Lives appear as white dots at the top of the screen. If you fail an Action Sequence, one life will be taken away. Move in any direction and the action will begin. Follow the on-screen prompts. You'll meet up with your victim, who will tell you, "Woe to those who can see both worlds." Oh man, what's happening?

7. Reconstruction - Morgue

You are now Carla, at the Morgue. You'll get some Action Sequences which, if successful, will allow you to invision what happened in the bathroom as the doctor details the autopsy. You'll discover that all three Aortas to the heart were severed with skill. This precise pattern rings a bell with the doctor. You'll get to ask the doctor some questions. The result of which will be that this reminds him of the Kirsten case. Hmm?

8. Tyler and Kate - Police Station

You are Tyler and you have the waitress, Kate, come into your office. At this point, you'll have to do come up with a composite photo. Although this has little affect on the game (later you can match the photo of Lucas with this composite sketch if you get a 75-100%), you do get rated based on a percentage of how close you got it. The percentages are 0-25%, 25-50%, 50-75%, and 75-100%. Note that on the computer screen behind Tyler there is a composite of what you're aiming for. It only flashes for a second. In order to get a 75-100% (just for your own pride) follow these instructions:

Neck - There are two v-neck necks. You don't want either of those. The rest of the necks have a round scoop to them. You do not want the thickest round neck, the one that tapers out at the bottom. That leaves three necks. One is very short and fairly wide. That's the one you want.

Eyes - Glasses are out, obviously. You want the big bulging eyes.

Mouth - There is one mouth that has a triangle shaped shadow under the lower lip and a shadow above the upper lip. The shadow above the upper lip isn't straight, but is sort of spiky.

Nose - The nose is connected to the eyebrows, which makes a big difference. Unibrow is out. Very light eyebrows are out. Pig man nose and upside down checkmark eyebrows are out. Flat eyebrows, thick nose is out. Slightly rounded dark eyebrows, with defined nose, is out. That leaves you with thin dark eyebrows with fairly thin nose.

Hair - Lucas has hair that is slicked back. There is only one hairstyle like this. Although Lucas doesn't have a widow's peak, choose the hairstyle where it is slicked back (not the crew cut one which could look like it's slicked back).

Facial Hair - Make your face with no facial hair.

9. Lost Love - Lucas' Apartment

As this chapter starts, you'll be sitting. Hit the "?" Action Icon to get some info. Get up and turn on the TV to hear about the composite image that Kate made and about saving the boy in the freezing water. Basically, you're waiting for Tiffany to come over. Sleeping will prompt that. Before you go to sleep you can drink milk, turn on the stereo, use your computer, play the guitar, or hit the punching bag. Playing the guitar is good practice for Action Sequences and will help your Mental State, but you may want to wait a few minutes for Tiffany to come over in order to show her how good you are. Hitting the punching bag will reveal to your that you are changing and getting stronger.

When you're ready, head to bed and lie down. Then, close your eyes and go to sleep. You'll soon see Tiffany ringing the doorbell. She has come to grab her stuff. You'll get some dialogue choices. Choose "Glass" to offer her some gin. Go to the kitchen and grab the gin from underneath the cabinet. Pour some and bring it to her for a Mental State boost. She'll let you know that there are two boxes that she has come to pick up. They both have her initials, "T.H.", on them. One box is to the left of the Answering Machine. The other box is in the bedroom, to the left of the Computer. Bring them each to Tiffany and you'll get the Action Icon to place them on the ground. She'll ask you some questions, answer however you like.

If you want to end up in bed with her, be nice to her by choosing "News" and then offering her some Gin. Grab the boxes, choose "Sincere", then "Alone" and then, "Sentimental". Tiffany will ask if you still play guitar. Show her what you got. "Kiss" her.

If you didn't have sex with her, go back to bed. If you did, you'll already be in bed. You'll have a crazy dream and will be woken. Get out of bed. Enter the living room. Take a look at the Crow on the green chair. Go to your front door and exit out. You'll see the little girl again. Then, you'll really wake up. You were dreaming that you woke up.

10. Hide and Seek - The Cemetery

You are at the Cemetery to meet up with Markus at your parents' grave. Walk along the curvy path. The first side path to your right has a Bonus. The second side path to the right is where you'll find Markus. Place the flowers on the grave. This will cause you to enter a flashback.

You are now a child at the military base where you grew up. Your brother and his friends want to play a little hide and seek in Hangar 4. You have a vision of Hangar 4 exploding in flames. You must save them. You'll get an Action Sequence. If you succeed you'll see a vision of what you have to do.

You have a map. You can zoom the map by hitting the button indicated in the bottom right of your screen. You are the green dot. You need to go to the red X. Soldiers are blue dots with their vision/direction indicated by blue coming out from them. Run forward toward the guard tower. Go past the sawhorses and toward the fence where there is some netting. You'll get an Action Icon to climb over the fence. Do so.

From where you land after climbing the fence, look straight across from you. There is a checkpoint leading to the other side of the fence. You need to run across the road to the left of that checkpoint. It doesn't matter how far left, just be left of it. Before you cross, pull up your map and make sure no guards are looking in your direction. When you run across, a good place to aim for is the "US Air Force" sign to the left of the checkpoint. You will end up in a ditch along the fence.

If the top of the map is North, head North along the ditch. You don't have to worry about being seen in the ditch. You'll get to a large rock on the left of the ditch. Across from this large rock there is a hole in the fence. Crawl through. There are two tarp-covered sets of crates in front of you. Advance to the second one. You are now facing the hangar you need to get into. There is a guard who will spot you, though, if you pop out from behind the crates. Watch to the left as a cargo truck will emerge from the hangar. Wait for it to pass by you and then run alongside it until you are halfway between hangar 4B and the next hangar (4A). Then, break off from the truck and run to the red X, a hole in the hangar. Go in.

After you send Markus away, you have a limited amount of time to find the three other kids. You start out near some bookshelves/shelves. There is a row of crates near you. On the other side of the crates you'll find your first kid hiding inside a crate. You'll see an "Eye" Icon appear when you are near. This kid will leave without much problem. Next, locate the burning oil barrels. On the other side of the hangar from them you'll see a staircase/ramp. At the base of those stairs is the fuselage of a plane. Inside that fuselage is the second kid. This kid is a jerk and won't leave. "Lie" to get him to leave. Finally, go up the stairs. Hiding behind some panels (wings?) leaning against the wall you'll find the third kid. Once you've found him you'll automatically leave the hangar. The flashback will end.

Markus will tell you to visit somebody that can help, Agatha.
