Kaede Smith - My personal favorite, despite her tiny health meter. She's fast, she's quiet, and she has a scope attached to her automatic weapon. She can break barriers and can absorb blood (to reveal messages).
Con Smith - Con is blind, fast and small. Because he's blind, his hearing is ultra-sensitive (watch for radial pulses to guide Con). He's a rapid shooter and a fast runner. He can also fit into places where only children should go. He uses Dual Automatics.
Coyote Smith - Coyote is another solid character. His Modified Revolver does a good amount of damage, particularly when you use his Charge Shot. He's who you look to if you need a lock to be picked, or someone who can jump high and through ceilings.
Kevin Smith - Kevin uses knives. I wasn't comfortable with this until later in the game, when it became very fun to use him. He can also go "invisible" when you command him to do so.
Mask de Smith - A former wrestler who can take a lot of damage. His Double Grenade Launchers are necessary when you want to blast through cracked walls.
Garcian Smith - The "Cleaner", or the man who collects and resurrects your personalities when they die.
Harman Smith - A central character whose role you aren't expected to understand. You'll play as him just a couple of times. Simply wheel his wheelchair around and use his Sniper Rifle when necessary.
Here are the skills.
Power - Increases the power of your weapon.
Speed - Increases speed in every regard. Upgrades to speed will make your personality run faster, shoot faster and reload faster.
Waver - Increases the steadiness of your arm as you aim at the enemy.
Critical - Increases the likelihood that a shot aimed in the vicinity of an enemy's Critical Hit Point will actually hit that Critical Hit Point.
Invisible - This upgrade is specific to Kevin. With each increase in invisibility, Kevin is allowed to stay invisible 5 seconds (give or take) longer.
Range - This upgrade is specific to Mask, and increases the distance in which he can accurately pop off a grenade shot.
As you upgrade, your personalities will gain new abilities.
Charge Shot - Dan, Kevin, Coyote, and Mask can use the Charge Shot, and is available, to a degree, from the beginning. Aim and hit your "Special Skill" button (Y on the Gamecube) to activate. You need one vial of Thin Blood for every tap of the "Special Skill" button. You'll use Dan's early, against the Duplicator (which requires 3 taps to create the Demon Shell).
Counter Attack - Everyone can earn this skill fairly early. It comes in useful at times, but doesn't work against all enemies. If an enemy gets too close to you, remain in "Aim" mode, wait for the white flash, then hit your "Counter Attack" button (X on the Gamecube) to quickly take the enemy down.
Critical Lock On - Again, everyone can earn this skill, but it takes much longer. It doesn't matter much if you're playing on "Normal", as you do lock onto weak points automatically in "Normal", but the skill helps greatly if you're going through on "Deadly" or in "Killer8" mode (unlocked after you beat the game).
Deadly Blow - Specific to Coyote, and simply blasts body parts of enemies off, making them easier to take out.
Double Tap - Available for your slow shooters, Dan, Kaede and Coyote. Simply tap "Shoot/Fire" twice to shoot two shots quickly.
Down Attack - Available early for everyone. This simply gives you the ability to use your "Counter Attack" button on enemies who are crawling toward you. Again, wait for the white flash to activate.
Enemy Slow - Available later for Dan and Kevin. Puts most enemies into a temporary slow motion mode with each hit.
Foot Lock On - Available for Coyote. It simply automatically locks Coyote onto the legs of enemies, which, with "Deadly Blow" manages to shoot a lot of legs off enemies.
Head Lock On - Available for Dan. It locks Dan onto the heads of enemies.
Shine Sparkling - Available for Kevin. It's really just a 3 X charged knife attack.
Triple Tap - Available for Dan. Like the Double Tap, but Triple.
Throughout the game you will be given various rings by Susie. What they do is quite obvious from their names, but, just in case, here's a quick description.
Fire Ring - Brings forth fire.
Water Ring - Fills things (primarily vases) with water.
Wind Ring - Blows away (or down) light obstacles.
Stamina Ring - You can take more hits without dying when this ring is equipped.
Power Ring - Increases your attack power.
Vision Ring - Garcian's ring, allowing him to see Heaven Smiles.

Killing enemies provides you with Thick and Thin Blood. As explained in the "Upgrades and Abilities" section, Thick Blood is transformed (via the TV in Harman's Room) into Serum. The Serum is then used to Upgrade your personalities. The use of Thick Blood does not interfere with your use of Thin Blood, nor vice versa.
Thin Blood is used to refill your personalities' health meters (the eyes on your screen), and to activate your personalities' special skills. If you're using it to refill your health meter, wait until you have accumulated a vial of Thin Blood (the eye will turn red), then go into your Start Menu and select "Blood", then "Recovery", to fill up. If you're using Thin Blood to perform a certain skill, like Coyote's high jump, wait until you have at least one full vial of blood, then activate the skill by hitting your "Use Special Skill" button.
If you die, your body will be placed in a paper bag at the point where you died. You will then find yourself in your last visited "Harman's Room" as Garcian. When this happens, turn around, exit the room, then run to where your character died. Garcian will then clean up the mess, and you will have to follow the on-screen instructions to resurrect your character via the TV (tap A on the Gamecube). At this point, select your personality, exit Harman's Room, and try again. Note, if you die as Garcian, it's game over for you.
