Techniques and Skills
There are definitely some techniques and skills that you'll want to learn in order to be successful. Some are more basic than others, so be sure you get comfortable with the easy ones and then move on to the more advanced techniques.
A great way to practice these techniques and skills is to choose a two-player Domination match. If you are playing with a friend, then practice these moves on each other. If playing by yourself, then choose two teams and choose the second team to be the Away team (don't have them be the CPU). That way, you have a dummy team to practice against.
Basic Skills
The goalie always wins - This is just a reminder that the Goalie will always knock you down and take the ball from you if you are near him. You can't attack him, hit him, or slide tackle him. So, beware of the goalie.
String Together Passes - As mentioned earlier, the ball changes color from Purple to White as you perform successful consecutive passes. The closer to white the ball, the more chance you'll have of scoring. Therefore, make sure you get in a good four or five passes before you shoot (whether it's a normal shot or a one-timer).
Lob Passes - Going along with the Consecutive Passes skill, you'll want to learn how to perform Lob Passes. To do so, hold Z and then hit A. To keep it going keep holding Z and keep tapping A. The ball will float from one player to the next, making for a nice white ball after five or six passes. At that point, get it to an open man near the goal and shoot that ball.
If you are playing somebody who is very good at Lob Passes and is keeping the ball away from you then look for the circle where the ball is going to land and Slide Tackle or Hit the opponent who is about to receive the ball. You can also hit A or B at the right time to pass or shoot the ball away. This does take some timing, but the Slide Tackle through the circle is very effective and results in you getting the ball back, as does hitting A to pass it to a teammate.
Dekes - Each player has a Deke, or fake-out, move. They can be very effective when used correctly. When you first start playing the game, try out a variety of characters and find the ones whose Dekes you like.
Switching between defenders - This is very basic, but very important. While on defense, be sure to hit A to highlight the player nearest the ball. Once near the ball, you can perform a Slide Tackle or a Hit to take the ball.
Slide Tackles - Simply hit any direction on the D-Pad. If you're near the ball, you'll steal it away from an opponent.
Hits - Hits are performed by shaking the Wii Remote when near an opponent. You'll want to perform hits on opponents with the ball. Power characters have a harder hit that can be used from a greater distance. If you hit an opponent without the ball, you'll award him/her a Power Up Item. This is built into the game to discourage you from going around and hitting everybody that you see.
One-Timers - Ah yes, the tried and true One-Timer. The One-Timer is a pass then a quick shot. To perform it, hit A to pass to a player and then immediately hit B. When the ball reaches that player, he'll do the One-Timer. One-Timers are very effective when you've succeeded in getting the ball to be white.
Playing keep away - When you have the lead an easy way to retain it is to play keep away. Simply lob pass back and forth between your two players closest to your goalie. If you want, you can also stand next to the goalie, inside the goal box, and when an opponent comes to attack you, he'll knock the ball to your goalie, thus creating a never-ending circle where you can run out the time on the clock.
Admittedly, this is an unsportsmanlike way to play, but it's great for getting through the tournaments.
Advanced Skills
Fake Shot - The fake shot can be performed by charging up a shot and then passing in the middle of a charge. You'll want to shoot soon thereafter as this is quick way to get a white ball.
Jump over the Goalie - You can jump the goalie with Peach, Toad, or Diddy Kong. To do so, it's best to be running at the goalie straight on (either directly left or right depending if you're the home or away team). Then, right before the goalie is about to pummel you, deke to jump over the goalie and run into the goal. Also, this is easier the closer the ball is to white.
Teleport through the Goalie - This works on the same premise as jumping the goalie. You can do this with Daisy, Boo, Waluigi, and Dry Bones. Head directly for the goalie and just before he is about to hit you, deke to perform the teleport. If done at the right time, you'll end up in the goal. Note that the length of your teleport is dependent on the color of the ball; the closer the ball is to white, the farther you'll teleport.
Knock down and shoot - This can be done with Mole, Hammer Bros., Bowser Jr., Bowser, Birdo, and any other character whose Deke knocks the opponent down. This technique is actually pretty simple. Run down the field and before you're ready to shoot, use your Deke to knock down anybody around you and then do a nice charged (or if you have time, a MegaShot/Skillshot).
Alternatively, this technique can be utilized with items. If you have an item, like shells or a bomb, for example, then you can get to spot where you want to shoot, unleash the item to knock down anybody near you, and then shoot.
Knock down goalie - Okay, so this breaks the rule of the goalie always wins, but, with Mole, if you time his SkillShot correctly, he'll burrow under the ground and pop up under the goalie, thus knocking him silly. Then, he'll shoot and score.
