Characters

Classes

Each character has a class: Balanced, Offensive, Defensive, Playmaker, or Power. Each class has its own strengths and weaknesses. For example, Playmakers are fast and are good at passing, but tend to have weak shots and hit (body check) distances. Defensive and Power players tend to have a very good hit distance. Offensive players have good and powerful shots.

In general, you'll want a mix of different classes on your team. There is no winning formula, however, so just play a lot of games and get to know the characters. You'll soon discover who you like and who you don't.

Captains

Mario
  • Class - Balanced
  • Deke - A normal fake-out move.
  • Special Ability - Super Mario. Grows large and can crush opponents by running over them.
  • Strategy - Use Super Mario, run around and take everybody out, then perform a MegaStrike.

Peach
  • Class - Playmaker
  • Deke - Jump
  • Special Ability - Freeze-Frame. Characters caught in the threepolaroidd pictures are frozen for a period of time.
  • Strategy - Peach is fast and has a long slide tackle. Use this to your advantage. Also, try to use Freeze-Frame when you have the most opponents around you. Peach can also jump the goalie, although this gets more difficult as the tournaments progress.

DK
  • Class - Power
  • Deke - Chest Pound, which knocks players out of the way.
  • Special Ability - Thunder Wham. Jumps up and slams into the ground causing any nearby players to go flying. Also tilts the field temporarily.
  • Strategy - Thunder Wham and then MegaStrike.

Waluigi
  • Class - Defensive
  • Deke - Teleport
  • Special Ability - Wall-Luigi. Hold down C to make a purple wall come out from behind him (you don't need to do it all at once, note the meter under the ability icon). This can be used to isolate Waluigi for MegaStrikes.
  • Strategy - Use the Wall-Luigi when in a corner to easily seal yourself off.

Luigi
  • Class - Balanced
  • Deke - A normal fake-out move.
  • Special Ability - Super Luigi. Grows large and can crush opponents by running over them.
  • Strategy - Same as for Mario.

Wario
  • Class - Offensive
  • Deke - Butt Slam (like a ground pound)
  • Special Ability - Gas Mask. Wario, well, flatuates a noxious green gas which confuses other players. Hold C to do this.
  • Strategy - Use Gas Mask in a wide circle and then MegaStrike.

Bowser
  • Class - Power
  • Deke - Shell cover. He ducks inside his shell and anybody who touches it is tossed.
  • Special Ability - Fire Storm. Hold C to release fire which causes players to burn and to erratically jump around.
  • Strategy - Use Fire Breath in a wide circle and then MegaStrike.

Yoshi
  • Class - Balanced
  • Deke - A normal fake-out move.
  • Special Ability - Egg Roll. Yoshi releases a huge egg. It will keep rolling for a period of time, or you can stop it with B, and it will explode knocking down anybody in the area.
  • Egg Roll if fairly unpredictable, but, if it rolls over enough of your opponents, immediately attempt a MegaStrike.

Daisy
  • Class - Defensive
  • Deke - Teleport
  • Special Ability - Crystal Smash. Crystals burst from the earth around Daisy, knocking down anybody in the area.
  • Strategy - When performing the Crystal Smash stay still or you'll run into your own wall. As soon as you do it, start a MegaStrike.

Bowser Jr. (unlocked by winning the Fire Cup)
  • Class - Offensive
  • Deke - Ground Pound
  • Special Ability - Sonic Roar. Bowser Jr. emits a loud scream which shrinks any players caught in its path.
  • Strategy - Pretty much the same as the other captains, do the Sonic Roar and then MegaStrike.

Diddy Kong (unlocked by winning the Crystal Cup)
  • Class - Playmaker
  • Deke - Jump
  • Special Ability - Red Card. A tractor beam that zaps anyone within its radius.
  • Strategy - Diddy Kong is fast and has a long jump deke. Use the deke to get away from players quickly and then do a charged shot. You can also work in a Tractor Beam and then MegaStrike.

Petey Piranha (unlocked by winning the Striker Cup)
  • Class - Power
  • Deke - Head Shake. Knocks down opponents.
  • Special Ability - Mud Slinger. Hold C to emit mud, which slows down other players when then get stuck in it.
  • Strategy - Lay down mud to seal yourself off, as you would with Waluigi's wall, and then do a MegaStrike.

Sidekicks

Koopa
  • Class - Balanced
  • Deke - A normal fake-out move.
  • Skillshot - Huge Shell. Sends a huge shell which smashes and stuns the goalie.
  • Strategy - As soon as you do the Huge Shell start tapping B so that you'll immediately kick in any rebound coming your way.
Toad
  • Class - Playmaker
  • Deke - Jump
  • Skillshot - Fire Ball. Sends a flaming ball at the goalie, setting his hands on fire, meaning he can't catch anything.
  • Strategy - After setting the goalie's hands on fire, attempt to do a lob shot (hold Z + B) to pop it over the goalie as he can't catch.
Dry Bones
  • Class - Defensive
  • Deke - Teleport
  • Skillshot - Lightning Ball. Sends a ball of lightning at the goalie, shocking him and making him incapacitated.
  • Strategy - After doing a Lightning Ball, run towards your rebound and repeatedly tap B so that you'll immediately shoot in any rebound.
Boo
  • Class - Playmaker
  • Deke - Teleport
  • Skillshot - Possessed Ball. Boo possesses the ball and sends it flying past the goalie.
  • Strategy - For the most success, perform the Possessed Ball from just outside the goal box (aka, near the goalie).
Birdo
  • Class - Power
  • Deke - Spin move which knocks enemies down.
  • Skillshot - Huge Egg. If you get a clear line to the goalie, this shot always goes in.
  • Strategy - Since the Huge Egg always goes in if there is a clear line to the goalie make sure to utilize any shells you have to clear the area in front of you and then let it rip.

Hammer Bros.
  • Class - Offensive
  • Deke - Hammer Slam
  • Skillshot - Hammer Toss. Get close enough to the goalie so that the hammers hit the goalie and knock him down.
  • Strategy - Learn the distance of the Hammer Toss so that the hammers hit the goalie, knocking him down, for a sure goal.
Monty Mole
  • Class - Power
  • Deke - Tunnel Pound. Burrows under the ground and pops up, thus knocking anybody near out of the way.
  • Skillshot - Tunnel Ball. Monty burrows under the ground, pops out and shoots.
  • Strategy - Learn the distance of the Tunnel Ball. You'll want to do it from mid-range and in. Doing it from the correct distance will knock down the goalie and will make it so that you end up in the goal.
Shy Guy
  • Class - Balanced
  • Deke - A normal fake-out move.
  • Skillshot - Bullet Bill Ball. Shy Guy sends out a Bullet Bill (the bullet from Mario games) upon which he rides.
  • Strategy - Upon hitting the goalie the bullet explodes and the ball is left for whomever can get to it first. A little chaotic and hard to control, but effective if you want to create chaos.

Road to the Striker Cup

The road to the Striker Cup requires you to get through three tournaments: Fire Cup, Crystal Cup, and Striker Cup. Each cup requires that you play a certain number of matches and place above a certain level. After that, you'll have to play in at least one Elimination Match (more elimination matches as the cups progress). Lose an Elimination Match and you'll have to restart the entire Cup. If you make it through the Elimination, you'll face off with the Cup Champion in a best-of-three series. Win that and you'll earn that character (Bowser Jr., Diddy Kong, Petey) and the Cup.

Your rank is determined by a point system. You earn 3 points for a win and 1 point for a Sudden Death loss.

Each cup has two trophies that you can earn: Brick Wall and Golden Foot. These are awarded to the team allowing the least goals and the scoring the most goals, respectively. If you earn both trophies in the same Cup, you'll unlock a new field for use in Domination.

Fire Cup

The Fire Cup is the first, and easiest, of the three cups. You must come in first or second after a six game tournament to qualify. After qualification there is one elimination match. If you lose, you'll have to start completely over (this is true of all elimination matches). If you win, you'll move on to the Fire Cup finals. This is a best-of-three match. Win it and you'll receive the Fire Cup and will unlock Bowser Jr.

Crystal Cup

The second of the tournaments, the Crystal Cup is more difficult and longer than the Fire Cup. You must place in the top four after a ten game tournament. Then, you'll play two elimination matches. Lose either of those games and you'll have to restart and play all ten games over again. Rotten. Pure rotten. If you make it through the two elimination matches you'll have to win a best of three series against Diddy Kong. Win, and you'll earn Diddy Kong and the Crystal Cup.

Striker Cup

The third and most difficult cup, the Striker Cup is not for the weak hearted. You will play nine matches. Place in the top eight to advance. There are three elimination games. Win all three and you'll face off with Petey (the plant inside green warp pipes). Win and you'll earn him and the coveted Striker Cup.

The skill difference between Crystal and Striker is less than between Fire and Crystal. Meaning, if you're good enough to win the Crystal Cup, you're good enough to win the Striker Cup. Granted, it will take you many tries and will test your patience, but it can be done. The big difference between the final two cups is that in the Striker Cup you just can't make any mistakes. They're faster, more aggressive, and use their items and dekes to perfection.

In my case, while going for the Crystal Cup, I was able to get records of 8 - 2 or better, and would have an outrageous difference of Goals For vs. Goals Against (the time I won the Crystal Cup I had 66 GF and 9 GA).

Then, jumping into the Striker Cup, I was losing by a goal, often in sudden death. Therefore, if you're kicking rear in the Crystal Cup, as mentioned, you have the skills to compete in the Striker Cup. You just need to hone those skills a little more and not make any stupid errors.
