Strategies for Winning Games (be it Wi-Fi, in Domination, or on the Road to the Striker Cup)

Score first and play keep away
Yes, it's cheap, but if you score first, or get the lead, then why tempt fate by continuing to be aggressive. Instead, simply lob pass back and forth between your two players closest to your goal. Essentially, just hold onto the ball until an opponent comes near then pass it over. Repeat.

Alternatively, you can simply stand in front of your goalie. When an opponent comes to take the ball, your goalie will knock down that player and will grab the ball. Pass it back to one of your players and stand in front of the goalie again.

Don't be greedy with your MegaStrikes
As you get deeper into the tournaments it becomes more difficult toperformm MegaStrikes due to the increased skill level of your opponents. Because of this, you shouldn't try to go for a five or six ball MegaStrike (the left side of the meter) which may take too long to pull off. Instead, try for a three or four ball MegaStrike so that you perform it more quickly, before an opponent knocks you down.

Get comfortable with Items
If you haven't yet, you should get used to recognizing and using items. Use shells, for example, to blast opponents out of the way. This buys you a little time to pull off a better shot. If you're using a character like Birdo, who has an unstoppable Skillshot, this is a great way to score. Another example is to use the 5x Bananas to seal yourself off in a corner and then do a MegaStrike or Skillshot.

You can also use your items defensively. If you can't get to an opponent who is about to unload on your goalie, then you may have a chance if you shoot shells or bombs at him. Just make sure you are using your items strategically and not just shooting them at random.

Other items, particularly the Special Ability Items (those items specific to your Captain), are highly effective as well and should not be used carelessly. For example, with Waluigi's purple hedge row, you can seal off an area from opponents so that you can perform a MegaStrike (corners work to your advantage). Something like Daisy's Crystal Smash works well to clear enemies, and will buy time for you to get off a good shot. Bowser's fire blast is also extremely effective.

Work smarter, not harder
The games of the Crystal Cup final will begin with a laser zapping members of both teams off the course, making it a 2-on-2 or 3-on-3 match. When this happens, focus on acquiring items, and using them on your opponents. Or, focus on knocking one down with a deke move. If you can temporarily take one or two of them out, it becomes significantly easier to get a good shot in.

Don't give your opponent any items he doesn't earn
This is key. Be very careful not to hit opponents who don't have the ball. Yes, you may have to here and there, but as general rule don't give your opponent items by being stupid and hitting everybody in sight. I found a lot of success, particularly when playing against Waluigi and Bowser, by not letting get a Special Ability. Sure, they may earn one on a charged shot, but don't give them anything that they don't earn.

Play others online (Wi-Fi Connection)
The competition online is often better than that which you'll face in the Crystal and Striker Cups. By playing online you'll be forced to improve your game and will learn skills, techniques and strategies from other players.

Learn to effectively switch players to get offensive rebounds
If you are shooting from the side your rebound is going to go to the other side of the field. As soon as you fire that shot, switch players so that you have somebody waiting on the other side to grab the rebound.

Use a quick shot from a Power or Offensive player just over the half-field line
First, in your defensive zone, pass the ball back and forth to get it charged up (white), then, with a player like Mole, Birdo, or Wario, step over the half-field line and fire a quick shot. Since their shots are powerful, this is quick way to score a goal without having to penetrate too far into the offensive zone. Do be careful, though, because if the shot it blocked the rebound may go behind you and create a breakaway for a fast opponent.

First man hit, second man pick up the ball
This is an old hockey strategy. The first player should attack the opponent with the ball; give him a big hit. The second player should swoop in and pick up the ball. This is important because after you hit a player you won't be able to immediately grab the ball with that player. Therefore, become adept at hitting, then switching players immediately and steering them towards the free ball.

Know your field
Many of the fields have special characteristics, so be sure to use them to your advantage. Here are some examples:

Thunder Island - 'Tis a might bit windy here. So windy, in fact, that farm equipment and livestock will go hurtling past. If you see it coming, get out of the way! Also, because there is no fence, you can hit players off of the field.

The Sand Tomb - You can run faster down the middle of the field, on the stone, than in the sand along the edges.

The Lava Pit - The hot lava spots on the field are not to be messed with. Don't go charging into one of the hot spots as you'll get burnt and tossed into the air. Hang back and wait for the ball to land somewhere safe and let your opponent be the fool who gets burned.

The Wastelands - On this field, lightning will strike the ball. Before it does, though, it'll strike twice away from the ball. When you see lighting starting, attempt to get the ball toward the opponent's goalie so that the lightning hits him, rendering him electrocuted. Quickly follow up with a weak shot and you'll score.

Shake your controllers when you see a MegaStrike
If you shake your Nunchuk when you see an opponent performing a MegaStrike it will disrupt his meter, making it harder for him to get a good MegaStrike (this is call the MegaShakedown). In addition, you should shake your Wii Remote because if you have any nearby players, you'll want them to hit the player performing the MegaStrike. So, in other words, whenever you see an opponent ready a MegaStrike, shake both controllers rapidly to do as much damage as you can, hopefully preventing the MegaStrike altogether.

When chasing down a ball against an opponent wait to hit him/her
If you and an opponent are both chasing after a loose ball, wait for the opponent to touch the ball and then pummel him with a hit. This way, you don't give up an item to him and you still get the ball. This takes some timing and practice, as the opponent may be able to get off a quick pass if you're too late in hitting him.
