The Team that I used to win the Striker Cup
My team: Peach, Monty Mole and Drybones as strikers, and Birdo on defense (this is in relation to how you choose the players in the select screen, not how I actually used them on the field). I chose these players for their combined speed and power. Here is how I utilized each of them.
Peach has good speed and a long slide tackle. She hits fairly well. Her Freeze Frame is effective in zapping some players and should be used in a way to zap as many opponents as possible. I didn't use her to shoot very often. She was more of a player to get the ball up field and then pass it off. On defense, she is great at stealing the ball.
Drybones is my other fast character. Although he has limited hitting and slide tackle range, it is better than say, Toad's. I like his Lightning Ball. To use it effectively, clear out anybody around you and then charge it up and shoot it. As soon as you do, keep tapping B so that you'll instantly shoot any rebound that comes your way past the electrified goalie.
I use Drybones and Peach to forecheck (a hockey term), which essentially means I use them in the offensive zone in an attempt to quickly steal the ball, particularly as the goalie rolls the ball out. Often it is good to simply choose one opponent that the goalie may roll it out to. Slide tackle just as the goalie is to release the ball. If you choose correctly you have an instant steal. Since the goalie usually only has two or three options, you'll be right between 33% and 50% of the time.
Birdo is my primary shooter. I use the other players to set him up, in particular, Peach as she is a Playmaker and you have a better chance at scoring if a Playmaker passes it to you. He is very skilled at scoring from mid-field (center of the field just over the mid-field line) with very little of a charged shot (a fully charged shot becomes difficult to perform as you get further into the game because of the skill level of your opponents). Birdo has a medium hitting distance which I use when necessary, but generally didn't use him that much on defense.
Also, since Birdo has an unstoppable Skillshot (Huge Egg), if you can clear out the path between you and the goalie by using shells, then you'll be able to score almost every time. Pay particular attention to times when you have two versions of shells as your items. In this case, get over the mid-field line, shoot both of your shells at opponents, and then charge up for the Huge Egg shot.
Mole is my enforcer and my primary player on defense. He has a very long hitting distance and can take out opponents even when you think they're out of reach, particularly if the captain is in the middle of a MegaStrike attempt. He also has a great shot, second only to Birdo in my opinion, and I use him as my secondary shooter. Again, use him for quick shots from long distances as they do have a good chance of going in. His Tunnel Shot is unstoppable from the correct distance, basically mid-range and in. If you can get him deep enough (which is sometimes hard because he's so slow) then attempt this shot.
Of course, you'll want to become adept at each of the players' dekes. Peach can jump over the goalie; Dry Bones can transport under the goalie; both of these require a good deal of practice and timing. Both of these are also good for avoiding opponents. Mole's Tunnel Pound effectively knocks players down, but if you use it repeatedly the other team soon catches on and knocks you down just after you perform it. Still, it is effective to do it to knock down an opponent and then to get a quick shot off. The same thing goes for Birdo. His Spin Move will knock down an opponent opening up a window for a quick shot to be taken.
I should also mention that I would have preferred Daisy as my captain. Essentially Peach and Daisy are the same, although I think that Daisy's Crystal Smash is more effective than Peach's Freeze Frame. However, if you like Peach's jump deke, then you'll want to stick with her.
