"Mass Effect" Game Guide

Prologue: Find the Beacon

Speak to the Captain

After talking to the crew members and selecting the top choice (remember, this guide is strictly following the Paragon path...the good path...for consistency) head forward. Now would be a good time to adjust your Y-Axis (looking up and down) if it is bothering you. To do this, go into the Mission Computer (Start button) and select Options >> Xbox 360 Controller.

As you approach the Galaxy Map, which you can't access yet, talk to Navigator Pressly, and tell him that you hear him arguing. Tell him you'll look into it.

On the other side of the Map, talk to Doctor Chakwa and "investigate" to learn about Spectres, Nihlus, and Eden Prime. You'll get some XP (experience points) for all the talking.

Head through the doors just beyond and talk to Nihlus. Choose "Talk" and then learn all you can. When Capt. Anderson enters, continue talking. In most cases if you see a choice to the left of the Conversation Wheel, choose it to learn more ("Investigate"). Be sure to learn about Protheans, Eden Prime, and the Beacon.

Head to the Dig Site

After the conversation with the Captain and Nihlus you'll end up on Eden Prime itself. Go through the tutorial which explains how to draw your weapon (X button), how to fire (RT), and how to zoom (LT).

Head in the only direction you can and you'll soon see some Gas Bags, the floating white biomasses. Use these for target practice.

Map and Mini-Map

You can access your map at any time by going into the Mission Computer. Points of interest are marked on it and you can place a Destination Marker on the map if you like to help guide you.

And, what game would be complete without a Mini-Map (GPS, Radar, whatever you want to call it). In this case, it is in the lower right of the screen. At this point, the only things you need to know are that the little arrow marker is North, that blue dots are you and your squad mates, and red dots are enemies.

Facing the water where the Gas Bags were located, turn to your left and head along the path. You'll soon get a cutscene and then will encounter some Geth Recon Drones.

Don't worry about doing anything fancy right now. Just zoom in (LT) on each of the drones and shoot them (RT). When the Drones are down, approach Jenkins and "Investigate". Poor guy, well, at least he died on his home planet. Choose to give him a burial for some Paragon points.

Head forward for an informative message on gels.

Medi-gel and Omni-gel

Medi-gel will heal you and injured squad members. Omni-gel is sometimes needed to use Decryption and Electronics. You gain these gels by defeating enemies and by opening containers.

You may use medi-gels by hitting "Y".

Proceed up the path and what's this, another message, this one telling you about Squads.

Squad

At any given time you can have up to two other characters in your Squad. Currently, you only have Kaiden Alenko (Sentinel). To view the status of you and your squad, go into the Mission Computer and choose "Squad" (crazy, I know).

Here you can view your current Level, how much Experience (XP) you have, how much XP you need to level up, the health and talents of you and your squad and, for you, how far along the Paragon or Renegade path you have become (the blue and orange meters fill based upon if you are good or evil).

It is in the Talents menu that you can upgrade your skills, if you had any Points. Currently, you don't, so don't worry about that now.

If you have Leveling set to "Auto" (which I do for this walkthrough) Points will automatically be distributed amongst the various categories. Otherwise, you'll have to do it manually.

Continue to Dig Site

Move a little farther along the path for more info.

Tactical Orders

You can command your squad to do as you wish using the D-Pad. Up sends your squad forward, to the area where you are aiming. Down orders them to seek cover and hold position. Left rallies them around you. Right orders them to attack the selected target.

Continue forward and you'll get a cutscene. Afterwards you'll see Ashley Williams taking cover behind a rock and some Geth Troopers. Take out the Troopers and then talk to Ashley. Learn all you can about the Geth, the Beacon, and the time Before the Attack.

Ashley will join your squad. She is a soldier. Follow the path and keep your eye out for an upgrade kit which contains a Heat Sink I and High Caliber Barrel I. Continue forward to find another upgrade kit (Hammerhead Rounds I and Radioactive Rounds I) and a crate (Light Armor - Scorpion I).

Equipment Screen

This area in your Mission Computer allows you to change and/or upgrade the weapons, armor, and other gear for you and your squad. If you like, you may replace your Onyx Armor with the Scorpion Armor you just found. The Scorpion Armor provides much better Tech/Biotic Protection but not as good Damage Protection. I kept the Onyx for now.

Continue forward for yet another game element, cover.

Cover, Grenades, and Storm

Much like the great game Gears of War, Mass Effect utilizes an easy-to-use cover system. To take cover, simply push up against any rock/wall. To take cover behind a low rock/wall, crouch by clicking down on the Left Control Stick and then push against it.

While hiding behind cover you can aim at your target. To pop out and fire, pull RT. To pop out and zoom, pull LT.

You may also choose to throw a grenade by pressing the "Back" button. The grenade has a ten second delay before it explodes unless you hit "Back" again to manually detonate it. Grenades will stick to flat objects.

Also like Gears of War, Mass Effect uses a sprint feature called "Storm". Press and hold "A" to storm, or sprint, short distances between cover. Note that when you do this you'll see a Fatigue Meter appear. If it drains you'll have to wait for it to recharge before you can sprint again and your accuracy will suffer as well.

Be sure to test out your cover skill at the two rocks marked with a blue arrow. Using your new skills, kill the Geth Troopers who are guarding the Dig Site. Once everything is quiet, enter the Dig Site area and open the crate.

Go to the middle of the Dig Site and "Investigate".

Investigate Research Camp

Head up the hill behind the Dig Site. At the top you'll encounter your first Husk enemies; formerly living creatures that were impaled on Geth spikes and whose nutrients were replaced by cybernetics. Shoot them all and then enter the left side of the research shed; the door is open, to find a crate and an upgrade kit.

Exit and go to the right side of the research shed. This door requires Decryption.

Decryption and Electronics

Many doors and containers in the game are only accessible via Decryption or Electronics (which is essentially decryption, just under a different category). You and/or a squad mate must have a high enough rank in order to attempt to decrypt a door. If that is the case, you will play a mini-game (push the buttons shown to you) to attempt to open the door. If you fail, you'll have to use omni-gel to open it. If nobody in your squad has a high enough rank in the required talent, then you can't access the door no matter what.

Press "Manual Override" to initiate the mini-game. Then, get ready to press the buttons you see on the screen in the order they are presented to you. If you fail and want to try again, you can go to the Mission Computer and "Load" your most recent save point.

Upon successful decryption, enter the research pod and you'll discover some scientists. Talk to them to learn about the Attack, Nihlus, and the Beacon.

Head to Spaceport

Move forward and you'll get a cutscene starring Nihlus and Saren. Keep moving and you'll soon be attacked by Husks. Kill them and then decrypt the door on the research shed on the right. Talk to the farmers inside to learn about the ship and to get the Stinger II pistol. Equip it if it didn't do so automatically. Enter the shed and use Electronics to unlock the locker for more items.

Head forward and up the stairs of the Train Station. Note the Containment Cells. These are exploding barrels that you can shoot to cause an explosion.

Approach Nihlus who is laying on the ground and "Investigate". Talk to the farmer to learn how Nihlus died.

Take the Train

Explore the area to the right of Nihlus' dead body for a med-kit and, by the fire, an upgrade kit. Head past the body and follow the platform, killing as you go.

After you head down the ramp you'll encounter a Geth Destroyer and several Geth Troopers farther down the path. Take them all out and proceed forward. Don't miss any med-kits that you may pass.

At the end of the path, you'll see "Train Controls". Activate them to ride to the next area.

Here you'll see that there is a 5:00 countdown to an explosion. Egad! There are 4 explosive charges that you need to disarm. Each is marked on your Mini-Map as a flag. The first is in front of you, near where you got off the train.

Before you move on, I recommend that you equip Ashley with the Sniper Rifle.

Equipping Weapons

Press and hold the "LB" button. The Weapons Wheel will appear. Here you can see what weapons are available to your squad.

To select a particular weapon for a particular squad member, highlight the weapon you want to equip and then hit "A".

From the first explosive, go up the ramps. At the top, turn right and cross the bridge using cover and killing as you go. Ashley will be able to pick off some Geth with her Sniper Rifle. You may want to use your Squad Command "Attack Target" (right on the D-Pad). On the other side of the bridge, to the left, you'll find the second explosive. Disarm it.

From it, work your way along this platform path killing the various Geth (Geth Sniper and Geth Shock Trooper are new to you). Use cover when necessary.

About half-way down the path you'll find the third explosive. Disarm it.

Continue all the way to the end of the path to locate the fourth explosive. Disarm it.

Head toward the other side of the station (don't cross the bridge...head north instead). Head down the ramp and clear the area of Geth. Afterwards, open up crates, the technician kit, and storage lockers. Investigate the Prothean Beacon.

You'll get a cutscene. Nice work, Shep! Way to destroy Prothean technology.

Once you wake up, now on the Normandy, be nice to Ashley and then talk to Captain Anderson.

Speak to Joker

When you start back up, grab the medi-gel and then exit the room. Talk to Ashley and Doctor Chakwa for some XP. Make your way upstairs. Head past the galaxy map and head forward to Joker. Talk to him.
