"Mass Effect" Game Guide

Noveria

Note, you may want to do Artemis Tau first as it will earn you a character strong in Biotics. This character will come in handy later in this mission. However, I didn't have much problem with this mission without said character, so do what you will.

Before you exit the Normandy, go downstairs and locate Shepard's Locker on the wall to grab some upgrades for the Assault Rifle and Shotgun. You may also search the rest of the ship to see your squad members (talk to them, equip them, etc.).

When you're ready, exit the ship. Choose whomever you want to be in your party. I chose Garrus and Kaidan.

Port Hanshan Docking Bay

Head around the path until you get to the greeting party, erm, the security waiting for you. Don't get into a fight, just cooperate. Head upstairs and talk to Gianna Parasini. Proceed down the stairs and use the elevator to go up.

Port Hanshan Plaza

Head to the Administration Office and talk to Gianna again. She'll let you see Anoleis. Go around and through the doors to see him. Talk to him and Investigate to discover that Matriarch Benezia is at Peak 15, a private mountain on Noveria, just not accessible right now.

Leave Port Hanshan

Talk to Gianna again to get a lead: Talk to Lorik Qui'in in the hotel bar. Make your way west to the "Elevator to Hotel". Go up.

Port Hanshan Mezzanine

Head forward and talk to Mallene Calis. Tell her you'll help and you'll get the Espionage sidequest. Not far away is Lorik Qui'in. Talk to him. He'll give you a garage pass in exchange for retrieving some evidence from his office. He'll also give you an elevator pass for the Synthetic Insights elevator.

Head back down one level.

Port Hanshan Plaza

Look at your map and locate "Elevator to Synthetic Insights". Go there and ride the elevator.

Synthetic Insights Offices

Exit the elevator and go forward. You'll be stopped by security. If you don't have high enough charm/intimidate skills you'll have to shoot the enemies. After it's cleared out go to the computer console in the room to the left for the Missing Person sidequest.

Head upstairs and take out any remaining resistance. Head across the bridge to Lorik's Office (it's the room above the room containing the computer console of the previous paragraph).

Approach Lorik Qui'in's Computer and hit "Open". Exit out and you'll encounter a security group led by Kaira. If you have the charm/intimidate skills to assuage the situation then, by all means, do so. Otherwise you'll have to fight.

This is your most difficult battle to date. First, I recommend that before the fight you make sure that your squad is wearing the best possible armor. Next, upgrade any weapons they may have. I found success by equipping all squad with Assault Rifles. When the battle begins, "Rally" your team (press left on the D-Pad so that they follow you) and run back to Lorik's office. Take cover in the doorway and peek out. You'll see Kaira coming at you as well as one or two guards.

Kaira is your main concern. Target any Powers (overkill, neural shock, whatever) that your squad has at her and then lay into her with your Assault Rifle. You may also want to try to throw a grenade or two at her.

Once she's defeated take out the guards slowly and methodically, one at a time, using whatever you please. I found the pistol or sniper rifle to work best.

Also, make sure that your shield (the little blue bar next to your health) and health regenerates before taking on those additional guards.

When it's all clear explore the area for crates, lockers, etc. When you're ready get back in the elevator. When you exit, talk to Gianna then and make your way back to the Hotel Bar.

Port Hanshan Mezzanine

Once in the Hotel Bar, talk to Gianna. She reveals that she is an undercover agent. Help her get Qui'in to testify against Anoleis and Gianna will help you out.

Head across the bar and talk to Qui'in. You can either just give him the evidence in exchange for a garage pass, or, try to convince him to testify. If you don't have a high enough charm/intimidate you won't be able to convince him, so just give him the evidence. If you do persuade him, after it's done, talk to Gianna for the garage pass. Finally, you can go directly to Anoleis himself and tell him you have Qui'in's evidence. You can bargain with him for safe passage to Peak 15.

In order to remain good, I recommend that you convince Qui'in to testify if you can. If you can't do that, simply give the evidence to Qui'in and be on your way to the garage.

Head to the "Garage" and at the entrance show your pass to the guard.

Fight and kill the Geth Destroyers and Stalkers. Talk to Maeko to learn that there may be "dozens" more Geth out there. Egad man!

Head to the north of the garage and approach the six-wheeled vehicle, the Mako.

Mako

The Mako is the only vehicle in the game. You'll be using it quite a bit in missions such as this and while exploring planets.

To enter the Mako, approach it and hit "A". To move forward/back/left/right use the Left Control Stick. To adjust the camera, aka, the turret gun, use the Right Control Stick. To fire the machine gun hit "RT". To fire the cannon hit "RB". To zoom the gun camera hit "LT". You can jump by pressing "A" and when you want to get out hit "B".

Driving may feel a bit awkward a first. Try to use just the Left Control Stick at first and then add in a little Right Control Stick once you get the hang of it. If you've played Halo you should pick up this control scheme pretty easily.

You can heal the Mako by hitting "Y". It uses omni-gel and makes your vehicle stationary while it heals. Therefore, it's best to retreat to a safe location and then heal.

Matriarch Benezia

Aleutsk Valley

Note, I highly recommend a Save as you begin driving. If you die you'll end up way back before you killed the Geth in the garage.

Drive forward into the blizzard. Note that the outdoors are labeled a "Level I Hazard." This means that you'll take damage if you are outside the vehicle for an extended amount of time.

Before long you'll encounter some Geth who are firing rockets at you and are behind shields. There is also a rocket turret.

The best way to deal with this bottleneck ambush is to slowly approach the area. Use your cannon to clear out the rocket turret and the first wave of Geth. Proceed slowly, using a forward and back motion near the entrance to the tunnel to quickly fire your cannon and then retreat to avoid enemy fire. Once the second set of enemies is clear go ahead and drive forward into the tunnel. Use your machine gun in a sweeping motion to clear out the remaining Geth.

You can heal the Mako by hitting "Y". It uses omni-gel and makes your vehicle stationary while it heals. Therefore, it's best to retreat to a safe location and then heal.

Continue to make your way along the path picking off Geth and turrets as you get to them.

A good thing to keep in mind is that if you zoom in (LT) you can more easily identify enemies. Once you have them in your sights, you can see if you're damaging them or not by looking at their health bar at the top of the screen. I noticed that the machine gun is pretty forgiving when it comes to aiming, so remember to use the cover of hillsides and snowbanks, pop out (drive forward or jump), fire a few rounds, retreat a tad, and repeat.

Also, along the way, hop out of the Mako when you see crates, upgrade kits, health kits, etc.

One final tidbit is that a red ring on your Mini-Map is a turret while a red dot is a Geth Trooper or one kind or another.

When you arrive at the end, hop out of the Mako and go through the door.

Peak 15 Garage

Before you go any farther equip and upgrade your squad's armor, assault rifles, and pistols. Make your way to the garage door which will open and take cover on either side of it. Use grenades and your assault rifle to take out the Geth Juggernaut. Also feel free to use any Powers your squad may have.

Once the Juggernaut is dead, cautiously proceed forward using cover and take out the three Krogans (two at the end, one up to the left).

Head to "Security" and grab the upgrade kit and weapons locker (if you can decrypt it).

Go to the elevator to the north of Security and ride it.

Peak 15 Administration

Clear out the cafeteria of Geth and you'll be introduced to some Rachnis, insect soldiers. They aren't very tough. Kill them and then go to the north room where you can decrypt the terminal for the Mercenaries sidequest.

Head through the cafeteria to the "Elevator to Mira Core". Enter it and ride it.

Peak 15 Mira Core

Head toward Mira Core. On the way there, you'll enter a room with some Rachni Workers (little insects) and a Power Junction. Take out the Rachni Workers (shotgun works well) and then "Open" the Power Junction.

You'll learn that Peak 15's Virtual Intelligence computer is broken. Looks like you'll have to fix it.

Enter the Mira Core room, go to the backside of it, and enter the core itself. Ride down the platform into the core. Here you'll attempt to repair the computer by playing a mini-game.

You need to transfer the memory stack from "X" to the memory stack of "Y" or "B". In other words, you need to make the "Y" or "B" stack all blue. You are not timed nor are you punished for mistakes. The puzzle works by not allowing you to place a lower block into a stack that has an upper block already in it. So, you'll need to shift blocks around so that you can get that lowest block from "X" into either "Y" or "B" and then stack on top of that. If that's too complicated for you, you can simply spend 100 omni-gels to do it, or, follow the directions below.

The VI is now restored. Talk to the hologram. She'll tell you Benenzia used the Tram, but of course, the Tram is currently inoperable. To fix it, you'll need to restart the Main Reactor and fix the Landlines.

Reactor Repair

Open your map and locate the elevator to the north, "Elevator to Reactor". Ride it.

Peak 15 Reactor Core

Note, I recommend a save here.

Take a look at your map. You need to get to the west side of the area. There is a north path and a south path, each with Geth along the way. Do what you will to take out all the Geth in the area. Here's how I dealt with them: Enter the north path just enough so that you're looking at the Geth at the other end near the exploding canister. Shoot the canister and then finish him off. Pick off the Stalkers that come your way. Whatever you do, don't go out onto the walkway as there is a Geth Juggernaut who will fire rockets at you from above. Command your team to "Take Cover" (Down on the D-Pad) so that they stay in this safe corner.

Re-enter the central room and look at the door leading to the south path. You may be able to see the shadows of two Geth on the other side of the door. Equipped, I had the Avenger II assault rifle with the Recoil Damper III and Armor Piercing Rounds III as upgrades. Approach the door so that it opens. The Geth will storm in. Throw a grenade at them and detonate it. You'll probably get caught up in some of it and take damage. Immediatly use a medi-gel and then lay into them with the assault rifle.

Alternately, I had success in using throw, sabotage, and overkill.

When they're dead, "Rally" your squad (Left on D-Pad) so that they come with you. Go through the south door and up the ramp. Enter the control room at the top and then, through the next door, is another Geth Juggernaut (the one that would fire down on you if you took the north path). Approach the door and lay into him. Your squad will probably get killed, but the help that they give before they die is invaluable.

With that Geth Juggernaut out of the way, open the nearby weapons locker for some goodies and then head back downstairs. Head west and make your way to the central bridge that leads to the damaged Fuel Lines.

Fix the Fuel Lines (hit "A") and then ride the elevator back up.

Reconnect Landlines

Look at your map and locate the elevator to the west, "Elevator to Roof". Go there and ride it.

Peak 15 Roof

Kill the multitude of Rachni and then go up to the "Landline" terminal. "Open" it to repair it. Use the Mira terminal to learn that the Tram is contaminated. She'll give you advice on how to fix it.

Contamination

Go to the "Elevator to Tram" and ride it.

Peak 15 Tram

Enter the first door on the right and approach the "Repair Plasma Purge". If you don't yet have a high enough Electronics skill, you won't be able to repair it. If you do, repair it and you'll watch as the two Rachni Soldiers get blasted away.

If you can't repair it, then simply decrypt the locked door, kill the two Rachni Soldiers, and get on the Tram. Either way, ride the Tram.

Matriarch Benenzia

Rift Station Lower Level

Head to the "Elevator to Science Station" and ride it up.

Rift Station Main Level

Talk to Captain Ventralis. He'll give you a Key Card to access the Hot Labs and the rest of the area. "Investigate" to learn more about the area and the labs. When you're done talking two Rachni Soldiers will attack. Kill them and then go back down the elevator.

"Summon" the Hot Labs elevator and ride it down.

Rift Station Hot Labs

Go forward and talk to Yaroslev Tartakovsky to learn that Benenzia isn't here at all and that you've been lied to! You'll also learn about the Neutron Purge and the Queen Rachni. Head north and talk to Mira to initiate the Purge (you may not have to do this depending on how you talked to Tartakovsky). Return to Tartakovsky and talk to him. Egad man! After that little scene is done, kill the Rachni Soldier. Approach the dead body of Tartakovsky and "obtain purge codes". Return to Mira and start the countdown to the Neutron Purge.

You have 2:00 to get to the elevator. I recommend a straight run for it with these suggestions. Go to the door and face all of the Rachni. Open your Power Wheel and, depending on what your squad has, use anything that will stun, throw, or lift the Rachni. Also, use Shield Boost on yourself. With this strategy, run for it, use a medi-gel along the way and push that elevator button as quickly as possible. Of course, make sure that you have the best armor equipped as well.

Alternately, I also had success tossing a bunch of grenades into the area and then spending about 1:30 clearing as many Rachni as I could. When the room was down to about three Rachni, I went for it.

You'll earn a bunch of XP for doing this. Once you're out of there, head back up to Rift Station Main Level.

Rift Station Main Level

Go to Medical Bay. You'll be ambushed by Captain Ventralis and the ERCS Guards. Take cover and take them out.

When the area is clear, head into the Guard Barracks to open two storage lockers. Next, locate the elevator to "Quarantine Lab". Ride it down.

Rift Station Lower Level

Head toward Scientist Barracks. Kill the Asari Commando and the ERCS Guards. Talk to Han Olar. Head toward Ventilation Room, killing the one Rachni Soldier along the way.

When you arrive at Ventilation Room you'll be alerted to the fact, via the Journal, that you have snuck into the area...the guards are not alerted to your presence....nice work.

Note, I recommend a save here.

Head to Secure Lab and you'll get a cutscene with Benenzia.

You'll now have to fight her Asari Commandoes and some Geth Snipers. This is a difficult fight that can get confusing. If you continue to fail at it you may want to leave, start another planet, and come back when you have a higher skill level or a better fighter in your squad.

Although it is a tough fight, once you know what's going on, it becomes much easier. The first thing to note is that Benezia's minions will come in three waves. The first wave is in the form of two Asari Commandoes.

From the start of the fight, immediately run along the catwalk to the right and take cover in the far corner. From here there is enough distance between you and the Asaris that you can actually think for a second. I recommend using the assault rifle and the Overkill Power. Do the same for another member of your squad and have the third member use Neural Shock or Lift (if that is an option for you).

Shoot the first Asari and then, if you can, wait to kill the second until your shield regenerates (if it's been damaged).

After you kill those first two Asaris you'll have to battle two Geth Snipers and two more Asari Commandoes. The problem, in this case, is that one of the Geth Snipers will literally appear directly next to you.

As soon as you begin this wave of the battle, press and hold "RB" to take a quick breath and get a hold of yourself. While in the Power Wheel menu, use the Right Control Stick to look around in an attempt to locate the other enemies. Of course, the Geth next to you is your first priority. I recommend that you have one of your squad member use lift, throw, or neural shock on him so that he's instantly a non factor. Shoot him dead.

Again, press and hold "RB". Most likely, the two Asari Commandoes are nearby. Use any Power to your advantage including a shield boost, overkill, whatever you have. Try to heal as well if you need to. Once you kill those two Commandoes you'll probably have to go in search of the fourth Geth Sniper, who was kitty-corner from the corner where I was taking cover. Before you hunt him down, however, take this brief moment of quiet to let your shields and powers regenerate.

Also, if your squad is knocked out, and you have the Unity Ability, use it and wait for their health to regenerate, or use a medi-gel and wait for the medi-gel to recharge before you go after that Geth Sniper.

Once you have your act together, locate and kill the Geth Sniper. This will trigger the third wave of enemies, six Geth Snipers.

By now, you know the routine: Use "RB" to take a pause and to locate any nearby threats. Deal with them first using whatever you have. Then, hunt down the remaining Geth and kill them. Take your time here as you'll want to be as healthy as possible when you kill that last Geth Sniper of this round.

When you do you'll trigger a conversation with Benezia. Talk to her to learn all that you can. Afterwards, you'll have to fight her. Fortunately for you, you'll get an automatic save here so you won't need to re-fight everybody if you die.

To defeat Benezia I recommend using a throw, lift, and/or damping Power on her. For yourself, I recommend that you use an overkill power (if using the assault rifle) or a marksman power (if using a pistol). If you're lucky, the lift/throw will make her an easy target to lay into. Do so and don't relent (just don't let your weapon overheat).

Once she's dead, quickly heal and take cover. There are about four more Asari Commandoes running around. Take them out one by one using any powers to your advantage.

When the Commandoes are taken out, you'll automatically talk to Benezia again. She'll fade off into the Asari afterlife.

Move around a bit and you'll get another cutscene/conversation where the Rachni Queen possesses Benezia and speaks through her. You have to make a decision, to free or to kill the Rachni Queen. Because this walkthrough is covering the Paragon path, choose to free her.

Exit out, go back to the Tram, and ride it...you'll automatically end up on the Normandy.

Aboard the Normandy

Talk to your squad and look around the ship if you like. When you're ready go to the galaxy map and set a course for wackiness, oh, I mean Artemis Tau >> Knossos >> Therum.

Choose whomever you wish as your squad. I went with Tali and Kaidan.
