"Mass Effect" Game Guide

Attican Beta >> Theseus >> Feros

Depart the Normandy with whomever you wish. I chose Liara and Tali.

Zhu's Hope

Talk to David al Talagani. You'll be attacked by Geth, clear them out.

Speak with Fai Dan

Head west and go up the stairs where you'll find some Geth Stalkers. At the top of the stairs, exit out to Zhu's Hope, the little colony. Head to the "!" point on your map and talk to Fai Dan. While you're talking, Geth will attack.

Stop Geth in Tower

Kill Geth as you make your way up the stairs. At the top, continue up the next staircase, toward the "!", instead of going down the hall to the right. You'll be locked in this tower area until you kill all of the Geth. Do so, and before you head back down to Fai Dan, go to the far end of the tower and open the Upgrade Kit and Medical Station for some goodies.

Inform Fai Dan

Talk to Fai Dan who informs you that you'll need to go to ExoGeni HQ. He'll also give you the Geth in the Tunnels sidequest. Before you set off, you may want to talk to some of the other colony people for the Varren Meat, Power Cells and Water Restoration sidequests. All of these have to do with the tunnels, so I recommend taking care of them now, if you want to deal with them at all...it's not necessary.

Also, locate Ledra outside of one of the colony pods and purchase from him the Haliat Armory License, and anything else you please.

Get to ExoGeni Headquarters and Investigate Mysterious Signal

Go to the "Elevator to Prothean Skyway" and ride it.

Prothean Skyway

When the elevator door opens you'll be attacked by a drone. Exit the elevator and destroy it. Hop into the Mako. Drive forward and take out the Geth Armatures and Geth. Not far from the garage door at the end is a side path on the right that you can access on foot. Inside are two Geth and a crate. Grab it if you want.

Otherwise, drive through the garage door that opens at the end of the skyway.

Skyway Weigh Station

Exit out of the Mako and enter the doorway on the left. You'll automatically talk to the ExoGeni workers in this Refugee Camp. Talk to Gavin Hossle for the Data Recovery sidequest.

Investigate ExoGeni Headquarters

ExoGeni Approach

Hop back into the Mako, head up the ramp, and continue to move along the skyway killing as you go. Note that there are two more side-tunnels which you may access on foot.

Go through the garage doors at the end of the skyway.

ExoGeni Main Level

Hop out of the Mako and fight your way to the left. Once you have this area cleared out, notice the door to the right (north) that needs some decryption. There is an Inoperable Object (aka, crate) inside with some goodies, but there is also a Geth Armature. You don't need to go in there, so do whatever you please.

Open your map and head toward "Drop Down". When you get there do just that; drop down.

ExoGeni Midden

Head forward and you'll automatically talk to Lizbeth Baynham, the daughter of one of the refugees you met earlier. She'll give you her ID Card to get you through locked doors.

Kill the Varren and then head to the SW corner, "to Main Level". Go up the stairs. If you got there quickly, kill the Krogan after he's done talking to the VI.

ExoGeni Main Level

Talk to the VI terminal to learn that the plant-like sentient being, the Thorian, lives in the tunnels under Zhu's Hope. You need to warn the Normandy about this but the force field is blocking communications.

Remove Force Field

Follow the path and you'll soon be overlooking a Geth claw (the part of the ship that latches on to buildings) being tended to by two Geth soldiers. Kill the soldiers, drop down to the Claw area, and then make your way along the path across from the Claw. When you get to the room with the blue force field, clear the Geth and then go along the left (west) path (if facing the blue force field). Head up the stairs.

ExoGeni Upper Level

Open the Secure Crate if you can and then follow the path to the next Geth battle. Clear them out, open the ExoGeni Terminal if you have the skills for the Investigate Facility sidequest.

Continue past the claw (you'll go up some stairs and then down some stairs) and take out the remaining Geth in the area. Before you activate the Shuttle Bay Doors, you may want to go down the right side hall to the secure crate to grab some goodies and you may want to decrypt the nearby server node for the Investigate Samples sidequest.

Equipment Management

It will be around this place in the game that you may start receiving warnings that you can only carry up to 150 pieces of equipment. If you pick up items which cause you to go over the limit you'll be forced to reduce said items into omni-gel. This can be a real downer, particularly if you just picked up a valuable upgrade.

To prevent this you should get rid of equipment that you no longer need. To do this, go into Mission Computer >> Equipment and select a category, assault rifle, for example. Scroll down the list of assault rifles. You'll have many that are old and inferior (rifles you picked up a long time ago and have since replaced with better versions). You'll want to reduce any that you're not using into omni-gel.

Your upgrades also count as items, so all of those armor upgrades, for example, all count.

To reduce equipment into omni-gel simply hit "Y" and then "A" to confirm. You'll want to have your wits about you when doing this as you don't want to make a mistake and reduce an item into omni-gel that you didn't mean to.

Once you have the hang of this, go through each of the categories (armor, pistol, shotgun, etc.) and omni-gel anything that you're not using to clear space.

Head over to to "Shuttle Bay Door Controls" and activate them. You'll learn that they're currently broken due to some PSI issues. You need to get the PSI between 31 and 34 so that the doors shut with force, thus cutting the Geth Ship's Claw off of the building.

After you activate the Door Controls you'll notice that there are a variety of PSI valves that you can operate to the left of the door controls. Select 11 PSI, 17 PSI, and 5 PSI. Doing the 1st grade math, this equals 33 which is between 31 and 34. Activate the Door Controls again to cause the doors to shear off the Claw.

Exit ExoGeni

After the cutscene backtrack down to the room which formerly had the blue force field.

ExoGeni Main Level

Head through the doorway that previously had the blue force field and you'll automatically talk to Lizbeth Baynham.

Speak with Refugees

Go to the Mako and get in. Drive along the Skyway until you get back to Weight Station where you were previously, at the Refugee Bunker. When you get near it, Lizbeth will hop out. Exit the Mako and follow her.

Refugee Camp

After dealing with the ExoGeni employee (Ethan Jeong) the best that you can (if you don't have enough Charm/Intimidate you'll see what I mean) you'll be given the Anti-Thorian Gas upgrade for your grenades. This is a non-lethal way to deal with the infected colonists. Equip this upgrade onto your grenades.

Return to Zhu's Hope

Prothean Skyway

Drive along the Skyway until you can go no farther. Here, you'll encounter a Thorian Creeper, a ghastly looking creature. Take him out and then tell your squad to be careful around the colonists, that is, use Gas Grenades instead of shooting them.

Minimize Casualties

You'll notice that there are 16 colonists that you have to keep alive.

Exit the Mako and go through the garage door. Kill the onslaught of Thorian Creepers (or just stay in the Mako and kill them). Either way, once the Creepers are dead, go up towards the elevator to Zhu's Hope. Here you'll find four colonists. Use a Gas Grenade or two to neutralize them (be sure you have equipped the Anti-Thorian Gas upgrade onto your grenades).

Summon the elevator and ride it down.

Zhu's Hope

Head south towards the stairs leading down to Zhu's Hope. Kill the Creepers and then use a Gas Grenade on the two Colonists. Go down the stairs.

Again, take out the Creepers and then use Grenades on the group of Colonists (there are five or six colonists here and I had to use three grenades to get them all). If you are out of or low on Grenades look for the Upgrade Kit to the right of where that group of colonists just was. The kit is to the right side of the small staircase and there should be 5 Grenades inside.

Continue to go around clearing out the area and using grenades on the colonists.

Note, if you are completely out of grenades you can knock out the Colonists using a melee attack in order to not kill them. To do this get directly next to a Colonist and pull "RT". Instead of firing your weapon, because of your close proximity, you'll either elbow or pistol whip the Colonist.

When you are near "Crane Controls" and the area is clear, activate the Crane Controls to lift a section of a colony pod revealing some stairs and to get a quick cutscene of Fai Dan.

Go down the stairs that you just revealed.

Thorian Lair Level 1

Note, now that all of the colonists are safe, don't forget to re-equip your grenades with a more lethal upgrade.

Head along the path and holy geez wow! that's a big plant. After the cutscene, kill the Asari Clone (I used Lift, Sabotage, and Overkill to quickly dispense of her) and the Creepers that charge you.

Destroy the Thorian

Head through the door and you'll find a weak spot on the Thorian, a Thorian Neural Node. Shoot it until it bursts.

Go up the stairs.

Thorian Lair Level 2, 3, 4, and 5

Head to the next node, clear the enemies, destroy the node, and repeat for the remaining nodes.

Do pay the most attention to the Asari Clone in each wave. Try to stun her with lift, throw, warp etc. (if you have a character that has those powers). Otherwise, use any shield boosts and/or overkill/marksman/carnage that you have. I found the assault rifle and the shotgun to work well in these close quarter battles. It also helps to have one of your squad equipped with a shotgun.

Note, I recommend a save between each Neural Node that you destroy.

When all five Nodes are destroyed the Asari, Shiala, will emerge. She is free. Talk to her to learn some info about Saren, Benenzia, and the Cipher...the thing that you need to decipher the vision you received from the beacon. Shiala will do a good ol' Vulcan mind meld with you and you'll get the Cipher implanted into your memory.

Head back to the Normandy.

Aboard the Normandy

Liara will offer to help you understand what the Cipher means. She will mind meld with you and will then need to take a rest.

As always, feel free to talk with the rest of your crew and also, visit Shepard's Locker for some goodies.

When you're ready, set a course for Virmire.

Assignments/Sidequests

- If you want to complete any Assignments (Sidequests) now is the time to do it, before you head to Virmire. Doing the Sidequests will earn you a ton of XP, credits, and the best weapons/ammo/armor in the game. It is also quite fun, in my opinion.

I say to do these now because after you complete Virmire you'll automatically be taken back to the Citadel, meaning you don't have the option to explore the Galaxy doing Sidequests. While it's true that once you figure out how to leave the Citadel you can explore the Galaxy the problem comes in when you have to report back to the Citadel to complete "x" Sidequest. Without ruining anything, you won't be able to check back in leaving a few of the Sidequests incomplete.

So, take my word for it and do all of the Sidquests now, if you want to do them at all.
