"Mass Effect" Game Guide

Introduction

About This Guide

The Lunabean Mass Effect Walkthrough and Strategy Guide - Paragon Version was written with one goal in mind: To get you through the game.

***Please note: A Renegade-specific walkthrough is included with the Mass Effect Instant Download PDF Guide.***

At every opportunity provided, we chose the Paragon option, that is, the good side. In conversations this is usually the top choice as opposed to the Renegade option which tends to be the bottom choice. This makes it so if you're stuck, you can simply go back to a previous save, move along the Paragon path, and get through the game as we got through it.

This is not to say this guide won't help you if you're playing along the Renegade path. The game's main objectives and directions remain the same along both paths, so, if you're opting to play as a bad guy, our guide will still guide you, but there will be a few spots where our guide takes you one place, when you need to go someplace else. But, again, these are minor offshoots, and, generally, our guide will tell you where to go.

Another aspect of the game which made writing the guide difficult is that its an RPG, and almost everyone plays RPGs in a way that is specific to their liking. For this reason we provide tips for some of the more difficult battles, but we can't tell you how to fight each one, as that is specific to your liking.

However, with that being said, the battles in this game aren't particularly difficult, at least, not until the end. The battles are more for you to use to figure out your fighting style...and it does take a long time to figure out your fighting style, so don't get frustrated. And note, if you're having a lot of trouble getting through a battle, chances are you aren't wearing the best armor, your weapons aren't upgraded to where they could be, or your own character needs some leveling up. If you find yourself having trouble, check out your armor options in your pause menu, upgrade your weapons, and level up as you go (we chose to auto level up, so this wasn't even an issue for us).

This game can seem overwhelming at times, but it doesn't have to be. Our guide explains many of the game's intricacies, as you come to them in the game. Also, your own pause menu (Mission Computer) explains a lot. This is why we don't have weapon descriptions or upgrade information, as it's all available to you from within your own menu.

Check it out, navigate it, and use it. The Mission Computer is your best friend. Other than that, all I can suggest is to be patient. The key is to not be overwhelmed. All of the extras are for the people who are going to play it again and again and again, and who want to do it as efficiently as possible. We just want to get you through the game. Be patient, and it will come.

Saving

Saving is lovely in this game. You can save whenever and wherever you want so long as you're not in battle. Simply go into your Mission Computer (hit "Start") and do so. Save often. Also, the game Auto Saves for you on occasion. This is a good thing.

Saving Strategy

Due to the fact that you can save at any time it's a good idea to save often. Doing so will allow you to "load" your game from that point if, for example, you don't like the way a choice you made turns out.

Throughout this walkthrough I have pointed out places where you may want to save due to such circumstances or a difficult battle. Pay attention to these. Although saving can seem like a chore (even though it only takes a few seconds) it behooves you to save often.

In-Game Screen

If you are targeting anything (ie, if your point your crosshairs over anything), the name of that thing and its health is indicated at the top of the screen.

In the bottom right corner you will find a Mini-Map, showing you your location (a larger map is found within your Mission Computer).

In the bottom left corner you'll see the names of your squad, their health, their shield status (blue bars), and how many medi-gels and grenades you have.

Weapon Wheel

Press and hold the "LB" button. The Weapons Wheel will appear. Here you can see what weapons are available to your squad.

To select a particular weapon for a particular squad member, highlight the weapon you want to equip and then hit "A".

Power Wheel

Press and hold the "RB" button to pull up the Power Wheel. If a squad member has an ability you'll see it here. You can select up to one power per squad member (in other words, you can unleash three powers at a time on an enemy). Once you have the power selected move the Right Control Stick onto the enemy (or object) upon which you want to unleash the power. Release "RB" to use the power.

Also note that you can choose to have one power be your "favorite" for quick use (mapping it to the "RB" button). To do this, highlight your favorite power and hit "X". You'll see a blue border appear around that power. Anytime you want to use that power you simply have to hit "RB" (this way you don't have to press and hold it to pull up the power wheel).

Mission Computer

Equipment

Use this menu to equip your squad with weapons, armor, biotic amps, and omni-tools.

On the left you'll see the "Equipped Item". For example, if you are looking at the Shotgun, this will show the Shotgun you are currently carrying. To switch to a different Shotgun scroll up or down in the "Selected Item" section. Switch out the weapon with "A".

To upgrade a weapon, armor, etc. hit "X". This will launch a new window. Note that each weapon has a general weapon upgrade (like High Caliber Barrel) and an ammo upgrade (like Hammerhead Rounds). Scroll left or right to highlight the weapon or ammo upgrade. Select the upgrade you want with "A".

To switch between squad members, pull either of the trigger buttons.

At the bottom of the screen you'll see your "Resources". From left to right: Medi-gels you have/Medi-gels you can carry; Grenades you have/Grenades you can carry; omni-gel (used for decrypting, electronics, and repairing the Mako); Credits (money).

This menu can be confusing at first, but by the end of the game you'll be a pro at it.

Squad

This menu is self-explanatory, as it tells you about you and your squad members.

On the right you'll see your "Talents". You can scroll through your talents to see what each one does. As you level up you'll gain "Points". You can assign Points to your talents section to build up your character, or you can choose to just auto-level in the "Options" menu.

In the middle you'll see your current Level, how far you have to go until you reach your next level (Experience, or XP), and your current Health.

On the left you'll see a blue "Paragon" and an orange "Renegade" meter. The more "good" choices you make, the more the Paragon meter will fill. The more "evil" choices you make, the more your Renegade meter will fill.

Codex

This simply tells you everything about everything. It's all background information and you don't need to look at it unless you want to learn about the world of Mass Effect.

Journal

The Journal is broken up into Missions and Assignments. Throughout this walkthrough I refer to Assignments as Sidequests.

Missions are your main objectives that are required for you to complete the game. Assignments (Sidequests) will help you earn XP, Credits, and Paragon points.

Load

If you want to load from a previous save, this is where you do it.

Options

Options allows you to adjust things like the direction of the "Y-Axis" and whether or not you want to auto-level. It also allows you to adjust other game elements like sound, graphics, and whether or not you want Tutorials turned on.

Map

Warning: include_once() [function.include-once]: URL file-access is disabled in the server configuration in /home/lunabeanftp/public_html/guides/mass-effect-walkthrough.php on line 237

Viewing the map is an important part of the game. You and your squad are the blue icons. "!" points are Plot markers (main objectives) while an "X" is a point of interest, often something you need to achieve the main objective.

You can view the Map Legend running down the left side of the map for all of the symbol explanations.

You can also set a destination marker by moving the cursor to an area you want to go and then hitting "A". When you view your Mini-Map, in game, you'll see a white arrow directing you to the destination you marked.

Save

Save your game here. I recommend that you save in a variety of slots, that is, don't keep saving over the same save.

Setting Up

The first thing you'll need to do is create your character. You can either stick with the default "John Shepard", which I've done for the sake of this walkthrough...to keep things nice and steady, or you can create your own hero.

Note, you can choose to be either male or female. Your choice will affect one of your potential love interests in the game. This walkthrough is written based upon a male, Lunabean Shepard. If you are a female character this walkthrough will most definitely work for you, just replace one of the female lovers with a male lover (Ashley for Kaiden).

To create your own character select "Enter New ID". Enter a name, I of course am Lunabean Shepard, and then go through your background info (Spacer, Colonial, Earthborn, etc.). These options help to craft your backstory but are not incredibly important. Next, you'll want to choose your Class, or Military Specialization. For the first time you play through the game I recommend that you choose Soldier as most of this game is shooting. Later, when you're choosing squad members for missions you can complement your military skills with members strong in Tech and Biotics.

After you choose your class and background you'll have the option to craft your face. This can be a great deal of fun and it's the face you're stuck with throughout the entire game, so choose wisely.

Finally, you'll get to choose some Options. If this is the first time playing an RPG (Role Playing Game) similar to this you may want to choose to turn on Auto Level-Up. This will automatically assign points to your various categories each time you Level-Up. For the purposes of writing this walkthrough, I will have it turned on for both me and my squad. You can turn it off at any time, however, so don't worry too much about it now. If later you want to go one way or the other all you have to do is enter your Mission Computer (Pause Menu) and change it.

Another important choice is Squad Power Usage. Later, as characters join your Squad, you'll have the ability to control their powers in battle. If you want them to handle this switch "Active". If you only want them to use their powers for defensive purposes choose "Defense Only". If you want to micro-manage the whole shebang choose "Disabled". Again, you can change this at any time so don't worry about too much right now. A good default is "Defense Only".
