If you played "Metroid Prime" then "MP2: Echoes" will be like riding a bike; a phazon bike with morph ball wheels. Once again you are stranded on a planet and against all odds must save the poor inhabitants, the Luminoths. These "light" creatures have been attacked by "dark" creatures, the Ing. And thus you have the basis for the game.
In the game there are two dimensions, the light and dark. Each room in the light map has a corresponding room in the dark map. This essentially makes the game twice as large. You'll be doing a lot of Portal traveling and you'll really have to pay attention to what you need to do next.
As with the previous game, "MP2: Echoes" is very open ended. Sure, you're gently shoved in the right direction, however, you can explore all you want. You don't necessarily need to pick up items in any particular order although you'll discover that you can't get to some items without having already received a previous item.
This game is also very entertaining from a Boss perspective. The bosses are not too difficult and not too easy. There are a perfect number of them and none of them (other than the final bosses) took a particularly long time to beat and beating them was always satisfying.
All in all, "MP2: Echoes" isn't for the casual gamer. It is very easy to pick up and learn but very difficult to master. You'll need at least a week to get through the game and most gamers will probably take a lot longer than that. A rare game in a world of linear First Person Shooters.
