LB's MGS 3 Strategy Guide Introduction

Welcome to Lunabean's "Metal Gear Solid 3: The Twin Snakes" Walkthrough and Strategy Guide. This guide will take you through the game on the "Normal" difficulty level. Differences between the difficulty levels are primarily based on damage taken when being hit, and damage inflicted on enemies. The more difficult the level, the more damage you will take, and the less damage your enemies will take. There are also minor changes in weapon locations between the difficulty levels, but these have to do with weapons you can find in many locations, and none of which are vital to getting through the game. Point being, this guide will get you through all version of the game, but there may be very few non-vital changes based on the difficulty you choose.

It should also be noted that the "MGS" series is unique in that you can play through it a number of ways. You can go through killing most anyone who pops up in front of you, you can go through neutralizing only those who threaten you, or, ultimately, you can go through the game being undetected. We wrote our guide in a place somewhere in the middle of all of these. We tell about the placement of guards between you and your objective. We primarily used the tranquilizer darts of the silenced MK22 Pistol to take down such guards. You can use whatever gun or tactic you want to get past them. We also opted for lethal attacks against the Bosses, although all bosses can be traquilized. Our goal in writing this guide is to get the average player through the game. Those who are looking for super stealth tactics can certainly use our guide for guidance, but you'll need to use your own skills for some more difficult parts.

It should also be noted that there are many "extras" to this game, not noted in this guide. The reason for this is, again, our simple goal of getting people through the game. Extras come to those who take the game a step further. These include special Camouflage, special items, and Frog locations. Most of the extra Camouflage comes from sneaking up on bosses and holding them up at gunpoint. Special items are just items you come upon through your travels. You'll spot a few green plastic Frogs as you play through the game. There are 64 of them. If you tag them all, you will earn the Stealth Camouflage.

While we don't use nor take advantage of the extras, we encourage those interested to go here: http://www.gamewinners.com/playstation2/MetalGearSolid3SnakeEater.htm.

GameWinners updates their "cheat pages" regularly with user submitted information, and is often our resource when looking for extras ourselves.

Stealth and Alerts

As mentioned before, this is a Stealth game. You really need to try to not be spotted. This means you can use what's around you to sneak past guards, and always opt for the best Camouflage. Move slowly, so your footsteps aren't heard. If you prefer not to sneak, be a quick shot. If you take guards out silently, before they can call in the alert, you'll be fine. If others are alerted, you will go into Alert Mode. This means teams of men will be actively looking for you. Either take them out or hide yourself until the Alert counts down through Evasion and eventually Caution.

Backpack

All you really need to know is you can only carry eight weapons and eight items on your person. Everything else is in your backpack. When weapons and items are picked up, you will need to pull them out of your backpack to use them. Access your backpack by going into the Start Menu, and choose "Backpack". Select items be placed in your in-game inventory (L2 and R2).

Codec

Use your Codec to stay in touch with your support team. If you are stuck in the game, it's always a good idea to call your team members to listen to any advice they are willing to provide. Go into the Codec by hitting "Select". All important numbers are provided in the memory. Although, feel free to play around with your Codec. If you find a hot station, you just may earn some extra stamina.

Food, Health and Stamina

Your stamina meter is the four sectioned bar beneath your health meter. Keep it high and any your health meter will be in a constant growth pattern. The higher your stamina, the faster your health will return. If you run out of stamina, you die. You'll be warned before this happens.

To keep stamina up, you need food. This comes in the form of packaged food you'll find lying around, or in animals you kill or trap. Kill an animal by stabbing or shooting it. Crawl and use your weapon to stab small creatures close to the ground. When you kill them they'll "poof" and you'll be left with a package. Grab the package and it will be placed in your food menu. Trap an animal by taking it out with a tranquilizer, then pick up the formed package. Trapped animals provide more stamina than dead ones, but they go bad quickly. You can also collect certain plants for food.

Note, you should feel free to call Para-Medic if you have any food questions, as some foods may poison you. If you are poisoned, simply go into your Cure menu and take the appropriate medicine. You should keep in mind poisoned food, as you can discard them in places where guards may pick them up...and poison themselves.

Combat: Basics

Most often you are going to press "Square" to draw your currently equipped weapon, and quickly release "Square" to discharge the weapon. You can slowly release "Square" to put the weapon away without discharging it. Of course, these are the basics...some weapons have unique actions. If this is the case, check your Weapons Menu for details. All weapon and item uses and how tos are provided if you examine the weapon or item in your backpack.

When I first started playing "MGS3" I had first person Pistol aiming issues. Finally, I figured it out. If you're going for head shots (and you should be for efficiency), hit L1 to go into first person view, and line the weapon up with the enemy so you can just spot his head over the barrel of your gun. Shoot and you should hit him straight in the head.

If you are unarmed (or if you have certain smaller weapons), you can punch with "O". Hit "O" repeatedly to create combos.

A new addition to MGS3 is a better CQC (Close Quarters Combat). Snake can only use CQC moves when he is unarmed, or holding a small weapon like the Knife or Pistol. To take advantage of CQC moves, sneak up on the guards (or stalk them with your directional pad), then hit "O". "O" plus a direction on your control stick will cause you to throw an enemy down. Simply hitting "O" will put the enemy in a choke hold (hold "O" too hard and you'll kill the enemy). While you have someone in a choke hold, press L3 to interrogate him, or press "Square" to use the enemy as a shield. Tap "O" to snap an enemy's neck, or move the analog stick to move around with him.

If you sneak up on an enemy and point a gun at his back before he spots you, he'll throw his arms in the air. Aim your gun at different places on the guard's body and he'll shake out items for you. Also, once you take an enemy out, disarm and pick up his body with "Square". Release the body and an item should pop out.

Weapons and Items

As stated before, if you want any details on weapons or items you have acquired, simply examine them from your backpack. Your backpack information will tell you all you need to know. I let you know where I find major weapons and items by putting these items in Bold as I come to them. With that being said, I did miss one fun guns. One is the Mosin Nagant (The Tranquilizer Sniper Rifle), which is acquired only if you take out The End (a boss) by tranquillizing him. Other than that, stick to the guide and you'll find out what you need to know to get by.

A Final Word

Again, please keep in mind that there are many ways to get through each area. We encourage everyone to be as creative as possible. We may not be the most creative in what we do, but we tell people how to get through the game. Once people understand how to get by, their creative juices can start flowing.

Also, if you have questions about gameplay not addressed in this introduction, look over the guide. It is quite extensive and explains a lot as the game is played, as the "Metal Gear Solid" games are notorious for having a large learning curve. We try to teach you as we play. We hope we will succeed.

Finally, if there are any changes or mistakes in the guide (it happens sometimes...) please check our Metal Gear Solid 3 Strategy Guide Update Page (http://www.lunabean.com/guides/mgs3_guide_update.php). We'll inform you of any updates there.

With that, good luck to you. MGS3 takes patience, but it truly is a great gaming experience.
