Part VI: Shagohod and The Boss
Tikhogornyj
After a cutscene and a Codec call. After a bit you'll speak to Eva. You are to meet her upstream, in a cave behind the waterfall. Cross the river and move along the east bank. Follow the river to the north. Cross the log and jump into the upper level of the river. Continue following it. Again, run along the east bank to avoid the obstacles, and you'll eventually come to the waterfall. Don't swim up to it...walk along the edge toward it, and you'll get a new cutscene. Save, and you'll get more cutscene. Eva will provide you with your equipment, C3, and the key to the locked door we passed so long ago, leading to the Shagohod. She also provides the details of how to blow up the tanks surrounding the Shagohod. In her explanation, you are shown the four tanks you need to attach the C3 to in order to destroy the Shagohod. It's a good idea to watch the cutscene so you know what you're looking for.
When you gain control of Snake, run north through the tunnel, collecting goods as you go. At the end, pass through the red door and climb the ladder.
Groznyj Grad Northwest
Once again, you're outside the Weapons Lab compound. Move to the south side of the tank you are standing next to and look east. Get to the red door directly across the way and pass through. The easiest way to do this is to simply stick to the south wall of the area, out of the view of the guards to the north, and make your way to it.
Groznyj Grad Northeast
North of you is the Weapons Lab. Like the first time you entered, you'll have to pass through the door to the East Wing. That door is NE of you. First, get east. Stick to the south wall as you move east. The guards in the area will be distracted by a drill. In the SE corner, look north. A guard will be patrolling in front of you. Take him out with a silenced Pistol and move north. The door to the East Wing is now in front of you. Get to it while avoiding the guard to the west.
Groznyj Grad Weapons Lab: East Wing
Inside, put on your Scientist's Uniform again and head up the north stairs. Pass through the west door and move south, to where you hid Raikov earlier. Pass through the west door and you'll automatically open the locked door.

As stated before, our goal here is to put C3 on all four fuel tanks. To plant C3, simply equip it, approach the fuel tank, crawl under it, go to one end, and hit "Square". You cannot plant C3 if you have an alert or evasion level, and you can't place it incorrectly...the game simply won't let you. You can place C3 anywhere on a fuel tank. I suggest the underside simply because the C3 can be spotted if it's placed somewhere obvious. If that happens, you'll fail the mission.
Move down the stairs and run directly west. At the west end, climb the stairs and run north. A guard will be approaching. Either take him out silently with a Pistol, or hide from him in the shadows. Either way, continue until you spot the fuel tank (it looks like a tank with a red console at each end). Go ahead and crawl under it to avoid the eyes of the nearby worker (or take him down). If you are spotted, these guys will run to alert others. Try to stop them before they do. Also, keep to the ground as you move. These guys are all over and can spot you from all direction.
Once you've placed your C3 here, crawl out and move down the set of stairs to the north. Just north of you will be the next fuel tank. Sneak behind the crates to the west of it to evade the guards, and plant your C3 on it. The third tank is directly east of you. Use the protection of the trucks and crates to get over to it undetected (there's a Life Med under the first truck). Once there, again, plant the C3. The final tank is now north of you. Use the cover of the crates and some swift silent pistol action to get to it.
Note, if you are spotted and you are taken to alert status, it's oddly safest to hide underneath a fuel tank. Apparently, the gunfire of the enemy won't blow it up (although yours will...eek). It can even be fun to shoot guards in the legs with tranquilizers until they fall. The choice is up to you. When all four explosives are placed, you'll be taken to a cutscene, which will eventually lead you to a Boss Fight. Save.

On normal difficulty you have 5 minutes in which to defeat Volgin. Volgin can't be attacked when his electrical force field is around him. His force field comes down when he's performing an electrical attack. So, you need to taunt him into attacking you. Pull out your M3 or AK-47. This will make Volgin mad, and he'll start to pull energy from his force field to use on you. When he does this, put your gun away, (tap "R1"). If you don't put your gun away in time, it will act as a magnet to you, and you will take damage and lose ammo. However, if you do put your gun away in time, Volgin's attack will miss you, and it will give you the opportunity to run to Volgin's backside. While he's still attacking, pull out your M3 or AK-47 and have at him.
The only other time Volgin's vulnerable to your guns (and grenades) is when he's recharging his electrical field in the back left corner. When his hand is up, he's open.
It really is that easy, and if you're an accurate shot, you can take him out with five or six Shotgun shots. Sure, Volgin's attacks get harder to dodge, but they can all be dodged. So, continue to taunt, disarm, run to Volgin's backside, avoid Volgin's attacks, and shoot the vulnerable Volgin until his health is depleted. Ocelot will drop some ammo for you if you need it.
Upon defeating Volgin, you will be taken away to a cutscene where the Weapons Lab blows and Eva saves you on her motorcycle. You are to escape with her to meet up with The Boss. Of course, you still have a little bit to deal with before the final fight...like the escaping Shagohod.
When you get control of Snake you will be in the sidecar of Eva's motorcycle...with unlimited ammo. Shoot anyone and everyone who gets in your way as you let Eva do the driving. I suggest using the RPG, because it's fun to have unlimited RPGs, which take out many enemies at a time. Try to hit the Shagohod a few times.
Soon you'll get to a cutscene. There's no damaging the Shagohod. The goal is to get it down the runway, to the bridge. Don't worry, Eva is still in control of directions. Just clear the path for her. If she's not moving, you have men to take out in the area. Do so and move on.
Groznyj Grad Runway
Soon you'll be chased by many on bikes, and the Shagohod, itself. I still suggest sticking with the RPG here...again, because it's fun. Don't worry about the Shagohod, just focus on the bikes. There will be a cutscene, followed by more chasing. Just stick in there. If the Shagohod gets too close to you, shoot its turbine feet with an RPG. That will slow it down. At the end of the runway you'll get another cutscene.
Groznyj Grad Rail Bridge
When you get to the bridge you'll automatically have your SVD (Sniper Rifle) in your hands. Use it to knock out the red lights (indicating C3 placement) under the bridge. On normal difficulty, there are two to take out. Wait until the Shagohod is close enough (listen to Eva), and start with the red light farthest from you. Next, hit the second light. The second shot will be a little tougher as swinging debris from the first shot will cover the light. You need to hit it before the Shagohod crosses, or you'll fail the mission. When you are successful, the Shagonod will cross the bridge, but you will have caused damage to its backside...making it vulnerable.
Boss Fight: Shagohod
Here's another example of a boss fight that's easy to deal with...once you know how to deal with it. All you have to do here is arm your RPG. The Shagohod will come after you. Don't worry about a single one of its attacks. Instead, use L1 to target either of the Shagohod's turbine feet, and shoot at it. The RPG will disrupt the electrical current, the the Shagohod will have trouble moving. Eva will then drive toward the back of the Shadohod. Arm another RPG as she does. When loading, look for the sparking box on the back of the Shagohod's body. This is it's vulnerable spot. Shoot an RPG into it and your damage is done. Repeat until you run the life meter out.
Ah, but that's only part one. In part two, you are on your own. Eva's still driving around, distracting Volgin, but you're in control of yourself now. Keep that RPG armed and continue shooting at the turbine feet. Although, since you're without a vehicle, it's a good idea to wait until the machine is close to you. When you knock one of the feet offline, run around to the side , and shoot an RPG Volgin's way (aim toward the backside of his body). If you hit him in the right spot, you'll do damage to him.
The other way to damage Volgin is to get behind (hit your Action button) a turret gun (go for the greener, larger, sit-down turrets), take aim, and shoot directly at Volgin. You can penetrate Volgin's electrical barrier with these guns. Just continue to shoot at him. Note, however, when you are near these turrets, Volgin will launch some missiles your way. Use the turret guns to shoot them down, then continue to pick away at Volgin's health. Also note that once Volgin has had enough of your turret, he'll roll toward you. Get off the turret before he rolls over it. All in all, not a bad fight.
Upon defeating the Shagohod and Volgin, you will have to survive another chase...this one involves hovercrafts...YAY! Simply pick them all off with your gun of choice. Pay attention to Eva as you go. If she tells you to shoot a log to clear the path, do so. Continue shooting away. Eventually you'll get into an accident with Eva. She's damaged, but you need to take her with you.
Para-Medic will call and tell you to cure Eva. Go into your Cure Menu and do so.
Zaozyorje South
Your goal here is to make it to the lake. You need to make sure Eva sticks by you...and you'll need to keep her stamina up. Do this by going into the Food Menu as you normally would. When you pick an item, select "Eva" and Eva will eat it. Note, Eva will do what you do, if she's close enough to you (crawl, jump down cliffs, etc.). The key is keeping her close to you. You'll have to consistently call her to you with your Action button. If you don't, you'll get to your destination without Eva, and you'll just have to go back and get her (check your map to locate where you lost her). So, with that being said, check your map and locate that Destination Marker to the south. Start moving.
Eventually you'll get to a cutscene where you spot some guards. Time to strap on your Thermal Goggles or your AP Sensor so you spot enemies before they spot you. Start off by getting on your stomach and facing the direction from which you just came. Take out each of the guards as they come toward you. When this is done, work your way south. Take the eastern path around, and continue to watch your back. The second you spot someone, or the second your AP Sensor starts beeping, hide in the underbrush and silently take out the approaching guards. They are moving in groups of 4 to 6. You really don't want to set off any alerts here, so stay hidden and be silent. If you do set off alerts and you are ambushed, grenades are your friend.
Cross the log bridge over the gap and continue forward, and continue keeping an eye out for guards (stay focused behind you). Near the destination marker there will be one more group. Take them out, approach the cliff with Eva by your side, and move forward.
Zaozyorje East
Again, check your map. Note the Destination Marker to the NE. Get on your belly can start crawling forward. The Thermal Goggles are nice to have on here, as the men aren't necessarily grouped now, but they're looking for you. Simply get to them first and silently take them out. Stop every once in awhile, along your path and check out the surrounding turf. If you spot a guard in the distance, use your Sniper Rifle to take him out. Continue to crawl along the path.
Watch your map for a northern path to open up. When it does, take it. You'll come to a ledge you must drop down. Before you do, find the two hiding guards with your Thermal Goggles. Snipe the one in to the right. When the other guards comes to check the damage, hit him, too. Take out anyone else who may be interested, and jump down. Run to the Destination Marker.
Rokovoj Bereg
Ah, the lake. Eva will get the WIG ready for takeoff. You must deal with The Boss...after a long cutscene, of course.
Boss Fight: The Boss
The most difficult aspect of this fight is the time limit. There is no clock, but the Boss will give you updates on how long you have, and the music will get louder as the end time approaches. If you don't take the Boss down in time, both you and she will die...and that's kind of pointless, so you'll have to stay focused.
First and foremost, make yourself difficult to spot. Put on your Snow Face and Uniform Camouflage. Next, run. The Boss will be after you. If you're good at the hand to hand combat, then fight her...otherwise, run, roll, and crawl to lose the lady. Once you feel you've successfully dodged her, get into a crouch position and use your Thermal Goggles to spot her. You can also make use of your AP Sensor, your Motion Detector, and your Directional Mic, but I found it easiest to simply stick with the Thermal Goggles. The Boss is going to make use of her surroundings, and she'll hide behind trees, so, if you can't spot her, just wait, and she'll pop out from somewhere. If she's off in the distance and hiding behind a tree, hit her with an RPG. Only do this if she's hiding from you, as she can dodge the RPGs from afar, and you'll reveal your placement once you use this. The RPG will damage her and knock her down. When she's down, arm your Sniper Rifle and pop her in the head as soon as she gets back up. Repeat. You can get into a rhythm with this pattern, if you're lucky. However, most likely, she'll eventually evade one of your shots and come after you. Run and hide again.
If she sneaks up on you, toss a Smoke Grenade her way. She won't be able to see and she'll let her guard down. Use your Thermal Goggles to see through the smoke screen and rail her with your AK-47 or M3 (you can do it without the Smoke Grenade if she's really close). While this is the riskier of the two methods, it does produce more damage to The Boss, and is, therefore, more efficient. The Boss will drop ammo and weapons for you, as you damage her. Collect them if you need them.
All this Boss fight needs is practice in the name of efficiency, as, again, it's not a hard battle to endure, the tough part is taking her out within the time limit, and part of that involves luck. Once you run The Boss's health down, you'll automatically put her out of her misery and you'll come to a new cutscene, which will put you into a final battle with Ocelot (don't worry, it's easy).
Boss Fight: Ocelot
Run to either of the two item containers in front of you. One of them is supposed to contain a loaded gun. I chose the left package. You'll be thrown into first person view with your Revolver. Just keep shooting until you find that bullet. It ends up being a blank, and Ocelot escapes, explaining how he's a part of the other MGS games.
After a cutscene extravaganza, revealing many a secret, you will come to the credits of the game. Nice work, you Snake Eater, you.
