When you finally get done with the intro, run forward and into the tree. Explore the area a tad, getting used to the movement, and then approach the bridge. Issun will chime in and tell you about Origin Mirrors, which are Save Points. Issun also gives you the sage advice of creating multiple save files as you progress through the game so that you can reload a previous save if something doesn't go your way (Save with "Z" on the Wii).

Cross the brige and you'll learn how to Tackle (on the Wii, swing the Wiimote right and left). This is your basic attack move. Use it to bust open the jars.

Continue forward and you'll learn how to Jump and Wall Jump. Simply jump at the wall ("A" on the Wii), and then jump again when you hit the wall. You will jump higher/longer if you hold down the jump button. If you're not reaching the cliff with the treasure chest, that's your problem, so hold down the button a little longer.

Once up, smash the treasure chest the same way you did the jars and you'll receive a Holy Bone, aka, health.

Head toward the broken bridge and Issun will tell you about Brush Strokes and the rejuvenation brush stroke which he will demonstrate, thus mending the bridge for you.

Cross the bridge and head up the hill. Issun will make you look at some stars which form a constellation. Poor constellation is missing a star, however. You'll now be taught how to paint. Follow the on-screen instructions to paint a dot at the left end of the constellation. (On the Wii, hold "B" to grab the brush, then "A" to paint. Release "B".)

Yomigami, the god of Rejuvenation will grant upon you the Rejuvenation Brush Stroke, one of thirteen that you'll eventually find throughout the game.

Head back down the hill and follow the path to the river. Pull out the paintbrush and paint back and forth, back and forth, creating a river. When you've done it the game will automatically progress.

Enter the river and swim across it to the other side. Before you go through the glowing door, open the treasure chest for an Astral Pouch.

Astral Pouches

Astral Pouches can store food. When it's full, it will revive you if you die. As you progress through the game, break jars to find food.

Break all of the jars in the area and you'll discover an Orange, a Peach, and an Apple, all of which are automatically placed into your pouch.

Head through the glowing doorway. Proceed up the path until you enter the Cave of Nagi.

Cave of Nagi

Approach the statue of Nagi, whip out your brush and paint the missing part of the sword. Next, paint a dot for the missing star on the left side of the constellation that appears. You'll release Tachigami, who grants you the Power Slash Brush Stroke, essentially, a sword.

Power Slash

The Power Slash Brush Stroke not only allows you to hurt enemies, but it allows you to slash through rocks, statues, and cut down trees. There are often items, like health or food inside such objects.

You'll need to test out this technique on the boulder. Paint a single line horizontally across the boulder. It'll split in two. That's quite a paint brush!

Exit the cave and you'll discover that you are trapped by a wooden gate. Approach the gate and "Examine" it. Use your brush to draw a line across it, thus slicing it open.

Farther down the path you'll get your first taste of combat. Issun will let you know about that disc on your back (named, Divine Retribution), which is currently your main attack. Use the main attack button to beat up the enemies. When an enemy turns black and white, you can use your brush to slash them. When the fight is done, you'll be rated. Try to use your brush on enemies when they're in the air to earn Demon Fangs (which you can trade in for better items).

Proceed back over the bridge. Before you go any farther, look to the left. You'll see a waterfall. To the right of it is a boulder, behind which is a treasure chest. Swim across and open the treasure chest for your first Stray Bead (1).

Continue backtracking, engage in another battle, and then continue all the way back to the Origin Mirror to save. After saving, go through the glowing door.

Now back where you started this level, use the Power Slash technique to cut down the fruit hanging from the tree. This will destroy Kamiki Village!

Kamiki Village

Main Story Walkthrough

Proceed forward to the stone statue near the umbrellas. Head right, down the path, and into the village. Examine a few of the statues and Issun will recommend that you go to a high place. Head back up the path and take the upper path all the way to the wooden deck overlooking the village (just follow the arrow). Once on the deck, draw a Sun (draw a circle...it doesn't really matter where or how big...just make sure it's a circle). This action reveals the fact that you've have the Celestial Brush technique from the start, what with you being the sun god and all.

After speaking with Village Elder Mr. Orange, you'll have to fight some more green imps. Take them out as you did before. After the battle, you'll learn about Praise. The more areas you restore, by defeating imps or feeding animals, the more praise you get.

Open the treasure chest in front of you to find a Feedbag (Seeds). With this bag in hand, you can head forward and feed the sparrows. If they fly away, just stay relatively still, keep an eye on their shadows, and wait for them to land. When one approaches, you'll be prompted to hit the "Feed" button ("Z" on the Wii). Do so, then select from the fan menu the seeds. Doing so will feed the sparrow, thus earning yourself some Praise.

Continue down the hill path and talk to Komuso, the guy near the umbrellas. This will cause a battle to begin. After the battle, Komuso will tell for exactly how many seconds you fought them. If you get 12 seconds or under Komuso will reward you with seven points of Praise. You can talk to Komuso again to start a fresh battle and can do this as many times as you like.

Head down into the village.

On the right is Sake Brewer Kushi. Talk to her. When you're done talking you'll learn that it's often required that you talk to somebody two or three times. If there is something else that they have to say, they'll have a green arrow over their head. Go ahead and talk to her a few times. You'll note that she keeps mentioning Susano.

Continue along the path (save) and you'll soon see a Merchant trying to push a huge boulder. Talk to him and some imps will attack. Defeat them for 30 Praise. At this point you'll have enough praise to enhance your Divine Attributes.

Divine Attributes

Issun will automatically open the Fan Menu to show you the Divine Attributes page. At the top of the page is your total accumulate Praise. Currently, I have 69. You may have something a little different.

You'll see that there are four categories: Solar Energy (health), Ink Pot (how much ink you can hold), Astral Pouch (to collect food), and Purse (for holding Yen). Next to each of these categories is a number. This is the amount of Praise needed to upgrade that attribute.

I highly recommend that you spend 50 Praise and upgrade your Solar Energy. To do this, highlight Solar Energy and hold down the main button until it fills up.

After dealing with your Divine Attributes, follow the arrow to Susano's house and enter it. Slash the blue jug which opens a hole for you. Go down and you'll find Susano sleeping. Slash him a few times to wake him up. He'll end up riding you. Carry him to the Merchant at the boulder. After the conversation, Susano will have retreated to the training area behind his house. Go there.

If it's night, wait for daytime, and talk to him. The guy wants some sake (who doesn't?). Go talk to Kushi, the sake brewer, in the rice paddy across the bridge. Kushi has her own problems, namely that the water wheel on the mill is broken. Walk over to it and paint in the missing piece of the water wheel. Kushi can now make sake.

Enter the mill and talk to Kushi. She'll give you the Vista of the Gods (sake). It's a blue jar. "Bite" it to pick it up and carry it to Susano. Talk to him and he'll begin training. What you need to do is slash the two training dummies and the training boulder as he's slashing them. This will make him think he's doing it and will boost his confidence. He'll then run over to the huge boulder blocking the path. Again, slash it just as he's slashing it and it'll break!

The goddess Sakuya appears and tells you about Guardian Saplings which are parts of her spread out across the land. She marks the location of two of these saplings on the map. At this point, you have your next quest...go in search of these Saplings! You'll want to save at the mirror below before going any farther.

Shinshu Field

To get here, make your way along the path, past the Merchant, and through the opening you created by removing the huge boulder.

Once in the field, open your map ("1" on the Wii) and note the two pulsing red circles (one is in the NW one is in the middle of the map, partially obscurred). These are the saplings. Head to the one in the middle of the field.

Along the way note the floating green flags, Demon Scrolls. If you want to fight some imps, run into a Demon Scroll. Otherwise, avoid them.

When you get to the sapling "Examine" it to be told that there is nothing you can do to help it right now. Instead, head NW and talk to the Nameless Man who is chopping wood. He tells you about a crystal orb that will help you revive the saplings.

Head into the cave just past his house.

Hana Valley

Main Story Walkthrough

Save at the origin mirror and bust open the treasure chest farther along the path for the Traveler's Charm. Continue on the path, dispose of the green imps at the fire, and go through the tunnel. On the other side you'll encounter a cursed tree. These trees throw their fruit at you. When the fruit is in the air slash it to send it back at the tree. This will stun the tree allowing you to safely pass by.

Continue on, cross the suspension bridge, and then head right. Continue on the path, defeat the imps (To defeat the yellow imp with the drum, jump above him, then tackle him from the air), and you'll meet up with Susano. He's having some trouble locating his secret training ground.

Take a look at the mural on the wall. It's missing a sun. Paint it in and the wall blocking Susano will break open. Follow him (you'll have to wall jump in one place). Head forward to the tiny green sapling. Examine it for fun. From it, head left and slash open the wooden poles blocking the tunnel entrance. Follow the tunnel to find Susano again (save).

As you did back in the village, slash when Susano slashes and the sleepy bear that is on the ball will fall over. This ball, is in fact, a blue crystal sphere. Push the sphere all the way back into the cave with the tiny sapling and push it into the puddle of water. Turn around and approach the back of the cave where you'll see a brown water fall. Look up and there is room in the sky to draw a sun. Do so. The light will reflect through the sphere and onto the sapling!

A constellation will appear. Fill in the two missing stars. Sakigami will appear and bestow upon you the Bloom Brush Technique. Draw a circle around the outer branches of the tree to revive it, thus reviving Hana Valley. You'll earn 30 Praise.

Backtrack out, fight the imps, and feed Seeds to the family of Boars (Boar and Piglets). Continue down the path and this time when you stun a cursed tree, use Bloom on it to cure it of its curse. Just past this you'll find a gloomy patch of grass that you can paint in. Do so to earn the Greenspout Tips Travel Guide.

Before you cross the bridge, use bloom on the cursed tree at the end of the path (stun first by returning the fruit) then jump up to the alcove/viewpoint behind it for a clover...use bloom to heal it for praise.

Cross the bridge and between here and the tunnel entrance heal the two cursed trees and heal the three black trees with bows on them. Head through the tunnel and defeat the imps. You'll see a treasure chest appear on an island down below. Go ahead and feed Seeds to the monkeys who show up in this spot.

Head down to the island, open the treasure chest for the Digging Tips Travel Guide. Dig where the green light is shining to discover another clover (Bloom it) and then use Bloom on the tree next to you.

Backtrack to Shinshu Field.

Shinshu Field

Main Story Walkthrough

Head over to the sapling in the middle of the field and use Bloom on it. You'll earn 30 Praise. Open the treasure that appears in front of the sapling for the Fleeing Battle Travel Guide. Essentially, this lets you know that in some battle there is a crack in the force field that surrounds you. You can attack that crack to escape through it. This is not in every battle, but many.

Visit with the Merchant near the sapling. Sell any treasures that you have and buy lots of Seeds and Herbs.

At this point, take a look at your map. Note the five red circles. You can visit these in any order. I'll be starting with the West one, the Dojo.

Head up the hill, enter the Dojo, and talk to Onigiri Sensei. If you have the money, go ahead and learn the Reflector Technique: 4 Winds. This adds a fourth hit to your combo. To earn it, you must complete training and hit the prop four times in a row, in time. Remember, (on the Wii) a simple flick of the wrist to the right or left is enough to strike. Repeat to strike again, and so forth. If you're getting blue Xs instead of Red Os, your timing is off, so try again. I did well by flicking right, left, right, left. Continue with the training until Onigiri lets you go.

Exit the Dojo and go through the Devil Gate, the nearby dark gate. Defeate the imps and you'll restore the little pond outside the Dojo, earn 15 Praise, and some Yen (you may now be able to afford a skill from the Sensei).

Continue up the hill and east to the east red circle, and follow the signs to the Pyrotechnist's House. Near it you'll have to fight the Dead Fish. Outside the house is a chest with the Legend of Orochi Travel Guide. If it's not nighttime, wait for night to set in and then enter the house.

Talk to Tama several times until Tama introduces himself. He'll show you the picture on the wall. My oh my, it looks like a bomb (a circle with a slash through a part of it). When you have the opportunity to draw, go ahead and paint the bomb icon, the circle with a slash through one part of it. After the fireworks show, another constellation appears. Fill in the two missing stars and you'll be granted the Cherry Bomb Brush Stroke by Bakugami (the boar god).

You'll get to try out your new skill on the nearby cracked wall. Head through the hole you created and grab the Rat Statue (1/13 Zodiac Statue) from the chest.

Exit this area, cross the bridge, and head west then south toward the southern-most red circle on the map. Here you'll find a treasure chest with the Feeding Travel Guide. Grab it, the read the sign regarding the Agata Forest Port.

Head east, to the SE area on the map with the two red circles. This the Moon Shrine. Enter it and talk to the priest, Mika. He'll give you Mika's Monster Notebook, which appears in your Fan Menu as Wanted List in your Log Book. These monsters only come out at night, (like Hall and Oats' Maneater). Upon exiting the house it'll turn to night and you can defeate Biwamaru the Vandal.

Exit this area and make your way back toward the sapling in the middle of the field. Just to the east of the sapling, on the dirt the path, you'll find Ida, the mail man ("Zelda Majora's Mask," anybody?). If you happen to have a Traveler's Charm, and you should have two by now, you'll automatically give him one.

To the east of where you found Ida, there is crack in the wall. Use a bomb on it to discover a Guardian Statue. You can't offer Vases yet, but remember this for later. Return down the path and you'll spot a Devil Gate. Enter and clear it. Feed the hares.

Finally, head back toward Kamiki Village (the path to the west). Here you'll find another Devil Gate. Clear it. Save if you want and then head to Kamiki Village.

Note, before you leave for Kamiki Village you may want to re-visit the Dojo as you're sure to have accumulated some money. If you didn't get both the 4 Winds and the Fleetfoot skills, now would be a good time to do that.

Kamiki Village

Main Story Walkthrough

Head down the path and talk to Komuo near the bridge. He tasks you with Blooming all 15 trees (the black ones with the bow around the trunk). Do just that by finding them throughout the village. Don't forget that you can go up the path and all the way up to the wooden deck area. If you're curious as to how many you have left, talk to Komuso again.

When all 15 trees are Bloomed, head up to the wooden deck and talk with Mr. Orange. He'll perform the Konohana Shuffle for you. This, of course, will require some of your intervention. Anytime you see the prompt to draw, go ahead and paint a circle around the closed bloom so that Mr. Orange thinks his dance is actually working.

When successful, you'll receive some praise and Sakuya will appear. After she goes away, a constellation will appear. Fill in two stars to reveal Hasugami, the monkey god. He'll grant you the Water Lily Brush Stroke which allows you to draw lily pads on any body of water (draw a circle on water). The Lily Pads can be used as platforms.

Of course, you'll get to try this out immediately. Do so and Issun will chime in to tell you to use this new power to get to a previously unreachable area. It's marked on your main map with a red circle (it's in Shinshu field, near the Dojo).

Once play resumes, from the lily pad you're on, jump and dash (jump in the air and hit your attack button) to reach the treasure chest to find a Sun Fragment.

Before heading off to Shinshu Field, go visit Sakuya at the Guardian Sapling (the tree icon at the north of your map). She will tell you about Guardian Fruit, which appear on this tree each time you heal a guarding sapling. Look up into the tree to see the fruit. Slash it down and you'll get the Bull Horn, which you can sell for lots of Yen.

You may also want to visit the merchant (buy seeds, herbs, and meat) and save before heading out.

Shinshu Field

Upon entering the field, take a look at your map and note the red circle in the south. Head there.

When you arrive, read the sign which says, "Agata Forest Port". Seems there used to be a ferry that ran on these waters. Lucky for you, you can make lily pads. Go ahead and create lily pads in the water so that you can advance through the tunnel. At the end, jump up onto the ledge and draw a Cherry Bomb to blow open the crack in the wall.

Agata Forest

Main Story Walkthrough

Follow the path to the right. You'll soon see a wooden ramp/stairs going down to the beach. Once on the beach, hang a left (east) and walk along the narrow path (running next to the water). You'll soon arrive at a cave entrance behind the waterfall. Enter the cave and follow the path to a cracked wall. Bomb it and you'll find the Guardian Sapling. Restore it and you'll earn 30 Praise.

Open the chest in front of the tree for the Devout Beads.

Main Weapons and Sub Weapons

Now that you've found a second weapon, you can equip a Main Weapon and a Sub Weapon. Any given weapon will act differently depending upon where it's equipped. For example, the Divine Retribution (the mirror disc you've been using) acts as a shield when equipped as the Sub Weapon. Pretty handy, eh?

To equip/unequip weapons, open your Fan Menu and choose "Equipment". Highlight (x) weapon to read the details of what it can do.

For now, go ahead and equip the Devout Beads as your main weapon and the Divine Retribution as the sub weapon.

Backtrack along the ledge toward the beach and you'll encounter Waka!

Boss Fight - Tao Master Waka

Waka's sword is named Pillow Talk. How odd. Then again, you are a wolf with a talking bug on your back.

To defeat Waka, stay away from him and wait for him to fire an arrow (projectile) at you. When that happens, use Slash to deflect the arrow back at him (like you did on the cursed trees back in Hana Valley). This will not only do some damage to him, but will temporarily stun him. While he's down, attack him with your Divine Beads.

Otherwise, avoid his sword attacks by either using your shield or by using Fleetfoot, which you may have learned from the Dojo (if you bought that skill).

After defeating him, Waka will talk for a while. He'll prophesize, "a log and big thrills." Sounds like the flume ride at an amusement park.

Head back to the beach and enter the cave. Enter the house inside the cave and talk to Madame Fawn, the Bone Reader (fortune teller). She'll give you hints as to what to do next for 500 Yen. Don't waste your money. If you need health, step into the pool of water to the right of Fawon, otherwise, exit and save at the Origin Mirror.

Exit back out of the cave and Bloom the water lily on the beach for a Traveler's Charm. Explore the other islands dotting the area for a variety of treasure.

Just SE of Madame Fawn's cave is a Devil Gate. Clear it (use bombs on the dead fish and yellow imp to make it go quickly).

Head to the south-most island to find Kokari, the boy who is fishing. He is the kid who is supposed to rebuild the broken bridge that you need, however, he's lost his dog and can't do anything until he finds it. Keep talking to him until you are told to give him a headbutt. Slam into him to do just that.

You'll now learn how to fish.

Fishing

Follow the on-screen instructions, and, if you forget them hit the "tips" button (upper right of the screen) to review them.

Here are the three steps:
1: Draw a line from the pole to the fish. Literally draw the line down into the water. It'll latch on.

2: Move the control stick in the opposite the direction the fish is swimming (watch the water behind him to get a good idea of which way he's goin'. You'll see the little happy face meter go into the green. Wait for it to near the red area at the right of the meter. When it does, release the control stick and then quickly move the control stick again in the opposite direction of the fish, always keeping an eye of where the fish is. In this way you'll keep the happy face in the green.

3: If you keep it in the green zone long enough a button will appear on the screen. Press that button (on the Wii, swing the Wiimote). As soon as you do, open your brush screen and Slash the fish.

Go ahead and start fishing. After catching two smaller fish (I got a crab and a crawfish) you'll see that there is only one large fish in the pond. Fish for it and you'll pull in the Giant Salmon (mmm...omega 3s). The salmon will cough up the Ruins Key. Open your map and note the red circle in the SE. This is the entrance to the Tsuta Ruins.

Head to the west of the map and locate the merchant. Sell your fish and treasures. If you can afford it, buy two Gold Dust.

Enhancing Weapons

Gold Dust allows you to power-up, or enchance, a weapon. Select Gold Dust from the "Tools" menu and then select the weapon to which you'd like to apply it. If you purchased two Gold Dust, go ahead and enhance both of your weapons.

While over on this side of the map, visit the Fang Trader. He'll trade you treasures for your Demon Fangs (see Demon Fang section in the introduction). I don't recommend dealing with him now. However, go ahead and open the chest next to him for the Battle Tips Travel Guide.

It's now time to visit Tsuta Ruins. If you don't have the key with you, go back to Kokari (the kid you fished with) and smash into him to make him drop the key. "Bite" the key to grab it and run with it to the Tsuta Ruins entrance (red circle on map).

If you haven't yet, clear the nearby Devil Gate. Head to the ruin entrance and the door will automatically open. Open the nearby treasure chest for the Enhancing Weapons Travel Guide and then enter the ruins.
