Paper Mario 2 Introduction

Welcome to Lunabean's "Paper Mario 2: The Thousand-Year Door" Walkthrough and Strategy Guide. This guide will walk you through all eight chapters of the game. In it we provide battle details, when necessary, and enemy stats (when necessary, and sometimes when not so necessary). "Paper Mario 2" is an RPG (Role Playing Game). If you've never played one before, it's a great introduction to the genre. More specifically, it's a turn-based RPG, meaning when you battle an enemy, you are taken to another screen where you and your partner will take on the enemy (or enemies), one turn at a time. Every RPG gamer finds their own favorite battle strategies. We provide you with the basics, and we tell you our own strategies for the many boss fights. With that being said, here's a little explanation of the Battle System.

When you touch any enemy you'll be taken into battle, where you will get a turn, your partner will get a turn, then every enemy will get a turn. Then this process repeats until you've destroyed the enemy, the enemy has destroyed you, or you successfully run away. When I say "turn", you get the opportunity to attack the enemy, use an item (which can hurt enemies or help you), use a Special Move (when you earn Special Moves), or use a tactic to get you out of there, defend yourself, appeal to the audience (for Special Dots) or switch partners. Your partner can do everything you can, except they can't use Special Moves, and their attacks are unique to themselves. Your enemies can choose to attack you, use their own items, or use their special powers to upgrade their team. If you strike your enemy before battle (with your Hammer or by jumping on them), you will be given an extra turn at the beginning of the battle. Use this to your advantage, and note, if they strike you first, they'll get an extra turn.

Upon defeating enemies in battle you will receive Star Points. One hundred Star Points will earn you a "Level Up". When you level up you get to choose your upgrade from HP, FP or BP. HP stands for "Hit Points". Think of it as health. FP stands for Flower Points. You and your partner use Flower Points for certain harder hitting attacks. BP stands for Badge Points. Badges can be equipped in your Badge screen. They do various things. Use them however you prefer. High HP is the most important, as far as I'm concerned, followed by FP, then BP. When I fought the final boss I had 70 HP, 45 FP and 15 BP. But that's just me. If you are fighting creatures and losing, head to the Pit of 100 Trials (just west of the Thousand-Year Door). This is simply a pit where you do battle through 100 levels. You earn great badges and many Star Points in the process. I don't walk you through the pit, as it's just battles, and how you battle is up to you. However, note that you get the opportunity to exit the pit every 10 levels.

When Mario has a turn to attack, again, you have several options. However, the heart and soul of your battles deal with Hammer and Jump attacks. You have to choose which is best for your situation. Your Hammer doesn't reach floating enemies (at least not until you get a Badge Upgrade to toss your hammer), but your Jump attack can damage you if you jump on a spiked enemy. Ultimately, I preferred the hammer, but I added many badges to my hammer, making it one bad weapon. Your partner has one attack menu. Choose the attack you want. Once you choose your attack, follow the on-screen instructions to most effectively pull off your attack. Your partners will get more attacks as you earn Shine Sprites. Take the Shine Sprites to houses with the Shine Sprites on their doors (there's one just east of the Professor's House), and trade the Shine Sprites for upgrades.

When you are attacking your enemies, you might care to know how much HP they have or what their weaknesses are. If this is the case, use Goombella's "Tattle" attack. Goombella will tell you all there is to know about the enemy, then this information is recorded in the "Tattle Log", in your start menu. Throughout the guide we tell you the HP, the D (Defense Power) and A (Attack Power) of most enemies as you encounter them.

To defend yourself, hit "A" or "B" at the exact moment you are about to be hit. However, don't tap your button, or you'll be locked out. "A" will lessen the attack. "B" will actually hurt the attacker, but it requires more precision.

Finally, after you find your first Crystal Star you'll be introduced to Special Moves. Depending on the Special Move, you can either help yourself, or do some massive enemy damage. Special Moves require a specified number of Special Dots. You earn dots by getting your audience excited. Excite the audience by pulling off a good attack or by "Appealing" via your Tactics menu. The Special Moves are as follows:

Sweet Treat - Uses one Special Dot. Allows you to collect HP and FP for both you and your partner.
Earth Tremor - Uses 2 Special Dots. Hit the "A" button when indicated. Continue doing it until you miss. How you do determines the amount of ground shaking damage your enemies will take.
Clock Out - Uses 2 Special Dots. Immobilizes all enemies for a short period of time.
Power Lift - Uses 3 Special Dots. Briefly increases your party's Attack and Defense power. Select the panels with the arrows and choose them with "A".
Art Attack - Uses 4 Special Dots. Damages all enemies you encircle with the star. Draw a circle around your enemies as many times as possible within the time. You must close the circles to cause damage.
Sweet Feat - Uses 5 Special Dots. Restores Mario and his ally's HP and FP, and cures poison. It's just like the Sweet Treat, but better.
Showstopper - Uses 2 Special Dots. Press the right buttons and you'll toast all enemies on the screen.
Supernova - Uses 6 Special Dots. Tap "A" repeatedly to do massive damage to all enemies.

With that being said, our walkthrough is very detailed. This information will be explained again as we come to it. With that being said, enjoy!
