Welcome to gameplay. The first thing you need to do is open a chest. Move forward and approach the chest. You'll be told how to open chests: push "circle" and then press and hold "x" when prompted.
Cross the bridge. Fight the soldiers by pushing "X" for a light/quick attack or "Square" for a heavy/slow attack. When they're defeated, head to the waterfall by the water wheel to find a treasure chest.
Head to the gate where you'll find a SKULL SPOT. Skull spots mark the location of objects you must interact with. Go up to it and follow the prompts to open the gate.
Go through the gate. Notice the soldiers on platforms. Here you learn that you can break platforms to knock the soldiers down and you learn how to block (Hold R1). Defeat the soldiers. The crank to get through the next gate is missing. Break through the undergrowth by slashing at it. Go through to the next area.
Three more soldiers, and they have left a MAP PIECE for you near the chest on the right. Defeat them, grab the MAP PIECE, and then grab the crank. Bring it to the gate and open the gate. Go through. Head up the stairs to the skull spot near the rope and you'll end up on top of the ramparts.
Here you learn how to throw objects. Pick them up with "Circle" and then use "X" or "Square" to throw them. Try it out on the soldiers. Break the barrels and crates for extra money and then go to the corner in front of you and slash open the door. Inside is a treasure chest. Move forward and you'll come to a green health chest. Open it if you are in need of health. Continue to the area with the skull spot. In the corner is a door you can slash open. Do so to find a treasure chest. Go to the skull icon and you'll be taken to the courtyard.
In the courtyard you'll learn about Saber Lock. Press "Circle" to lock sabers with an enemy and then hit "Square" to knee him in his nether-regions. Defeat the soldiers and then open the main gate by rapidly tapping "X". Head back into the middle of the courtyard and locate the skull spot near the flag pole. Raise the Jolly Roger flag.
After the cutscene you need to use the battering ram. Press the buttons shown on the screen. Get three in a row correct and you'll smash open the door. Cutscene and level end.
At the start of this level you'll be told how to use your range weapons: Jack is able to throw Grog Bombs (aka, fire grenades) and Will (and Elizabeth later) are able to throw hatchets. Each player can hold 10 weapons. You refill your weapons by finding Grog and/or Hatchet Barrels and pushing "Circle" when near them. They're scattered throughout levels, usually in areas where you need them.
Work your way through the town fighting pirates. Soon you'll get to a well with a skull icon. Pull up the well bucket to find a soldier with a MAP PIECE. There is a health chest near if you need it. Continue into the next area. On the right locate the treasure chest near the grog barrel.
Move on to the Town Square. Here you learn about Explosive Crates. Pick them up with "Circle", drop (or place) them with "Circle" and then toss a Grog Bomb at it to make it explode. Defeat the enemies in the area. Pick up an explosive crate and bring it to the wooden fence. Place it at the base of the fence. Stand back and toss a grog bomb at it. The fence will explode. Go through.
First, take out most of the enemies in the area. Then, head over to the hatchet barrel on the right. Switch to Will. Throw hatchets at Jacoby to hurt him. While you're doing this, more pirates will attack. Take them out and return to throwing hatchets. When you run out of hatchets, visit the hatchet barrel to restock. Repeat until Jacoby is defeated.
When you start back up, you are told how to lock onto targets by holding "L1". While locked on, you can scroll through targets with your Left Analog Stick. Use "Y" to attck your target. Use Will and practice this with the enemies in the upper windows. Fight the enemies until a townsperson places a POWDERKEG in the area. Hatchet the two pirates on the barricade. Pick up the powderkeg with "Circle". Get a few steps away from the barricade and toss the powderkeg at it. It will explode on impact allowing you to go through the barricade.
Move forward, fight the pirates, and you'll get to a dead end where there is a drawbridge. To lower the drawbridge: switch to Will, lock on to one of the ropes/clasps on either side of the bridge, throw a hatchet at it, repeat for the other side. The bridge will drop.
Go forward and defeat the pirates. Go to the gate. You'll see a skull icon on the left; a crank. Open the gate. Go to the right side of the gate and operate the gate there to open the next gate for the townspeople. Before you use the crank on the scaffold, open the treasure chest in the courtyard. Go to the crank on the scaffold and operate it. It'll take you to the next area.
Defeat the pirates. Before you head through the arches, grab a powderkeg. Carry it to the left side of the courtyard where there are four arches (three bricked-over, one with a wagon). Throw the powderkeg at the bricked-over archway to the right of the wagon. The wall will blow up and you'll reveal a treasure chest with a MAP PIECE.
Move forward through the arches. You have to man a cannon ("Circle" button) and shoot landing boats below. This is essentially a bonus phase, as you earn 500 coins for each ship you hit. If you miss, you're not penalized. There is no reticle (crosshair) so you'll have to feel it out. The level will end when all the boats are gone.
Fight the enemies. After a few minutes you'll see a skull spot on the right ladder (right window). Go up to it and hit "Circle" to kick the ladder. This is only temporary and simply teaches you how to kick a ladder. Keep fighting until you can kick down both ladders. Do so one after the other and you'll get a cutscene. The next room will open. There are two ladders in here as well. Fight until you see the skull icon on any one of the ladders. You need to knock over all four ladders in one go of it in order to proceed. If you fail, just keep fighting until you get another opportunity.
Exit out the hole in the wall. You are on the second floor balcony. Before you head down the stairs, head right. Near the bookcase you'll see a skull spot. Activate it and then rapidly tap the button it prompts ("Triangle" button in my case). This will reveal a secret treasure chest with a MAP PIECE. Head down the stairs.
This is very easy. There is a chandelier above Pintel. It is secured with two ropes: one on the left wall, one to the right. Go up to each rope and slash it to make the chandelier fall.
Finally, you must escape via the front door. You have 1:15. This is plenty of time. There is only one path. Head left, go through the dining room, and then out to the front foyer. You'll see a door on the left with a skull spot. Activate it and you need to match the buttons on the screen. Get three-in-a-row correct to open the door.
At the start of this mission, Flame Cutlass and Blade Barrage are unlocked. To use Super Attacks, press "R2". They cost 10 times as much as a normal ranged attack. There is a grog barrel along the right, sorry, starboard, side of the ship if you need to refill.
Fight the soldiers. Note that on either side of the deck is a lever which you can slash to open a trapdoor. Soldiers will fall into the open hole. After fighting for a few minutes you'll get a cutscene. Afterwards, the two conquistadors gaurding the front stairs will become active. Use a super attack to defeat them. Run up the stairs and hit the lever on each side to drop the anchors. Open the treasure chest. Fight the soldiers until you get another cutscene. The other two conquistadors will come down making the back of the ship accessible. At the back of the ship, there is a powderkeg. Grab it and bring it to the left side of the main deck. You'll find a tall, unbreakable crate. Throw the powderkeg at the crate to reveal a MAP PIECE. Defeat the conquistadors and then go up the stairs and cut the ropes to lower the two rowboats (two ropes on each of the two rowboats). Open the treasure chest and the health chest, if necessary.
Next, you must set fire to three masts: one at the front, one at the rear, and one in the middle. Use Jack's "Flame Cutlass" attack to set fire to the front and rear mast. Refill at the grog barrel.
Defeating Don Carrera is really a matter of breaking the steel plates and lighting the mast on fire.
The main mast is protected with steel plates. The plates have a damage meter. Don Carrera will come out. His sword attack can damage the plates. Sword fight with him near the mast (actually touching the mast), after a one-two-three combo (light attack), you'll hear him scream (a Spanish rolling of the "r" scream). When you hear this, get out of the way (R1 and push away from him) and let him perform his attack. If he's close enough to the plates, he'll do damage to them. When the plates are down, activate a Flame Cutlass and burn the mast. The level will end.
At the start of this level, the Running Kick is unlocked. Press "L2" to perform it.
Move forward. There is a treasure chest on the right. Fight the soldiers and then activate the skull spot near the mine cart to kick it. The cart will go to the next skull spot and stop. Note the switch to the right of the mine cart. Slash at the switch to change the path of the cart. Then, kick the cart. (If you didn't change the switch before you kicked the cart, go back to where you first found the cart and ring the bell to get a new cart.) The cart will to to the left and stop at a barricade. Throw a grog bomb at it to make it explode, thus destroying the barricade.
Go through and open the treasure chest and free the prisoner by following the prompts on the screen. Head back to the main tracks and follow the only path to the right. Look to the right to find a health chest in an alcove covered by wooden planks. Break through to get health if you need it. You will soon come to another prisoner. Free him. Head back to the tracks for a cutscene.
An elevator has been lowered. Defeat the soldiers and step onto the elevator. It'll automatically go up. If your partner isn't joining you on the elevator, switch characters and run to the elevator.
Now in the upper mines, there are divergent paths: one to the left, one to the right, with various side-paths off of those. First, clear out the majority of soldiers. Return to the mine cart and kick it once. It'll go along the right path. Activate the switch. Kick the cart again and it'll go off to the left and stop at a barricade. Throw a grog bomb at the cart to destroy the barricade. Behind it is a soldier, a health chest, and a hatchet barrel.
Return to the beginning and ring the bell for another cart. Hit the switch and then kick the cart. It'll go off to the left and stop at the next switch. Hit the switch and kick the cart. It'll stop at the next switch. Hit the switch and kick the cart. It'll go off to the left, stopping at a barricade. Throw a grob bomb at it. The barricade will explode revealing a treasure chest with a MAP PIECE.
Return to the beginning and ring the bell for another cart. This time, make it go along the same path you just took, except at the third switch, hit it to make the cart go off to the right, stopping at a wooden barricade. Throw a grog bomb at the cart to destroy the barricade. This is your exit. However, don't leave yet. There are three treasure chests in this area. Each is in an alcove, behind wooden planks.
NOTE: You can do the mine cart paths in any order you wish. Just make sure you explore each path.
When ready, head to the elevator. Step on it to end the level. If your partner isn't joining you on the elevator, switch characters and run to the elevator.
At the start of this level, Ground Stab is unlocked. Hit "Square" near a fallen opponent to perform a finishing move.
Defeat the Scallywags and you'll get a cutscene of Captain Pequeno firing a cannon at you. He blasts open the fence. Go through. Follow the path and you'll soon reach the Gallows. Defeat the enemies and a large double door will open. Go through. There are two enemies throwing exploding barrels at you. Use Will and his hatchets to defeat them.
Continue forward and note that there are two paths: one left, one right. Take the left path first. Defeat the enemies and then locate the powderkeg on the right, before the covered well. Pick up the barrel and throw it at the covered well. The cover will explode revealing the MAP PIECE. You only get one shot (toss) at this so, position yourself in front of the well, a few feet back and you should be fine. Backtrack and take the right path. You pass a health chest if you need it. You get a cutscene.
There's nothing fancy or tricky here. You must simply attack him. To start, locate the two exploding barrels and throw them at him. Then, switch to Will, and throw as many hatchets as you have at him. Then, as Jack, use the Flame Cutlass to attack him. Otherwise, use your various sword attacks until he is defeated.
As for his attacks...when he's on the roof, simply run in a big circle to avoid the cannon fire. When he is using his sword, block and dodge as best you can.
At the start of this level, Saber Slam is unlocked. First, lock sabers with "Circle" then quickly hit "X" to throw your opponent.
Gibbs has a life meter. You must protect him while defeating the Rabble-Rousers. Stay near him and attack the enemies. Use Will so that you can throw hatchets at the gunners above. When everybody is defeated, look at the tables in the room. Each table has a candle on it. Light each of the six candles with grog bombs to reveal a MAP PIECE in between the rows of tables. Refill your hatchets at the hatchet barrel and exit out.
In the next area you find Cotton being held hostage. Break all of the large crates on the right to release his parrot. Pick up the key in the middle of the room and use it at the skull spot to open the door. Go through.
In this room, hack the posts of the platforms to make a path for you to go up the ramp. At the end, slash the rope to lower the barrel containing Marty the Dwarf. Exit out.
Target the baskets/barrels to either side of El Grande as Will. Throw a hatchet at each one to defeat him. It is a pain to lock on to these baskets/barrels as the lock on will want to go to a nearby enemy. Remembr you can scroll through targets using the left analog stick.
After he's defeated, head back to the tavern and finish off the bar brawlers.
