Quick Review

I am embarrassed to say this is my first Tim Schafer experience, so I approached Psychonauts not knowing what to expect. For this reason, I assume that I'm looking at the game through a different set of eyes than those with Grim Fandango and Monkey Island expectations. I cannot compare the games in any way, shape nor form. What I can do is tell you, flat out, this is the best platformer to hit the Xbox, as gameplay is solid and the storyline is simply hilarious.

In the game you star as Raz, a stowaway of sorts, who found his way into a camp for kids with Psychic powers. As Raz, you enter the heads of various characters, first, to hone in on your Psychic powers before your dad comes to pick you up, then, to solve the mystery of campers' brains being sucked from their heads. Within the heads of characters you will work your way forward, through standard "platformer" levels and puzzles, while collecting Figments of Imagination, Emotional Baggage, Mental Cobwebs, and Vaults, where the deepest of darkest secrets are forever stored. You make your way through these levels by using a variety of acquired powers, such as Telekinesis, Clairvoyance, Pyrokinesis, and Levitation.

Psychonauts is chock full of very, very dark humor. It is the dark humor which puts the rating up to the "T" level, as there is very little violence beyond what you'd see in any "E10+" game. With that being said, it is also the dark humor which makes the game as great as it is. I've never laughed so hard while playing through a game, which does make me wonder a bit about my own mental health.

If you enjoy platform titles, and even if you don't (normally, I'm not much of a fan), it would be a shame to miss out on this spectacular adventure. While a first time play through takes only 12 - 14 hours, I'd definitely recommend buying this game, as you'll want to play it again and again.
