LB's Spider-Man 2 Quick Review

I am rarely impressed by video games based on movies. I am rarely impressed by video games based on super heroes. I am rarely impressed by video games published by Activision. Combine all of this and you have "Spider-Man 2", the least impressive video game I have played in months.

Now, to be fair, the first few minutes of the game were a good time. Web-slinging through a nicely scaled and accurate model of New York City is exciting. Doing good deeds and fighting petty crimes for Hero Points makes you feel good. However, soon (and I mean very soon), it becomes horribly repetitive. When this point comes, it's time to focus on your missions. Let me sum up your missions for you: Go to the blue destination marker. Fight. Collect Hero Points to move on to the next chapter. Repeat. Occasionally the game will mix it up for you and toss in a meeting with Mary Jane (also a destination marker), or a rooftop race with Black Cat, but you get the idea.

Personally, I am confused and disappointed as I read countless previews of the game calling it worlds better than "Spider-Man: The Movie", the game released to coincide with the original film's release. I do not know how the conclusion was reached. The original "Spider-Man" was stealthy and story based. This one is simply sloppy and open. The story is treated as a sidequest, not the main goal. Which does leave open the question, "What is the main goal?". The answer? I haven't a clue in the world. You can deliver Pizzas, meet Mary Jane in timed runs, or take photos for the Daily Bugle, all for Hero Points. You can go around New York City and collect any one of several hundred tokens (whether they be Skyscraper, Buoy, Secret or Hideout), then realize that you get no rewards for doing so. Perhaps that's why I'm so hostile toward the game. There is a lot to offer as there's a lot for a Super Hero to do in the Big Apple, but the game gives you little, if any, incentive to do it.

If you love "Spider-Man", give the game a rent and swing around town. Be warned, while the game throws in some extra characters and doesn't really follow the movie's plot, it has enough of the movie in it to spoil the movie for those who haven't seen it. For those who have seen it, it will be a wicked disappointment. Again, if you must play it, rent it or wait for it to drop in price before even considering purchasing it.
