"The Spiderwick Chronicles" Game Guide

Introduction

Welcome to Lunabean's Unofficial "The Spiderwick Chronicles" Walkthrough and Strategy Guide for the PS2, Xbox 360, Nintendo Wii, and PC. In it you'll be walked through each of the game's seven storyline chapters, along with the bonus 8th chapter, which will allow you to complete the Field Guide and earn 100% game completion.

Because this guide was written for four systems, the controls are referred to by action rather than name. To match actions with buttons specific to your system, go into the "Pause" menu and select Controls and Gameplay > Controls.

Since this game is fairly straight-forward and provides step-by-step guidance of the basics, I'm not going to bore you with a long introduction. With that being said, here are the basics.

You die when your last leaf falls off the branch. You restart at the last checkpoint. Health can only be earned by catching and releasing a Featherwing Sprite. Sprites give you special powers. Jared fights with a bat and a slingshot. Simon fights with a Splattergun and his arm (he tosses Faerie Fruit for you, which attracts hard to reach Sprites). Mallory fights with an epee of sorts.

Everything else, you'll find detailed in the guide below. Enjoy your quest!

Exploring the Mansion

Explore the Mansion

Explore the mansion

You will begin your Spiderwick quest as Jared, who wants to check out the house before going to sleep. Go ahead and explore the 2nd floor to familiarize yourself with the controls. The game will provide you with prompts, telling you what button does what. However, if you forget and need a little reminder, go into the "Pause" menu and select Controls and Gameplay > Controls.

Get used to using your "Center Camera" button ("R2" on the PS2) as it will eventually become important. Also, use your "Interact" button ("O" on the PS2) to examine items with the glowing eye above them or to speak to your siblings.

Once satisfied with your second floor explorings, head downstairs then into the kitchen to the right. Note the crack in the wall, then open up your Quest Log via the Pause Menu. You will find that you have two new tasks to fulfill your first quest: Find a broom stick and Open plaster wall.

Find a broom stick

Head back up to the second floor, then up to the attic. Take note of the ladder and climb it to the tower. Approach the broom and grab it with your "Interact" button.

Open plaster wall

Return to the kitchen, move close to the cracked wall, then hit your "Attack" button ("X" on the PS2) to break the wall open with your broom. Keep swinging until it breaks, revealing a dumbwaiter.

Ride dumbwaiter

Simply follow the on-screen prompts to ride the small lift (on the PS2, move the left and right control sticks up and down alternately).

Spiderwick's Secret

Find chest key

Collect the Fancy Key from the table in the middle of the room.

Find chest

Return to the tower above the attic and "open chest", thus revealing the Field Guide. Examine the Field Guide as you did your Quest Log.

The Unseen World

A Home for a Brownie

Find birdhouse

Head downstairs and exit out the front door. As you explore the outdoors you'll find (and automatically pick up) a variety of items. There are Ball Bearings (ammo for your Slingshot), Gobstones (throwable items), and Faerie Fruit (throwable lures for sprites). You need not worry about using these items now, but do have fun collecting them.

Explore all of outside to familiarize yourself with the area (and for items). When that's done, enter the shed (not to be confused with the garage), and collect the Bird House.

Return to Study Desk

Return to the mansion. Since you can't use the dumbwaiter to return to the study, head to the attic. To the left of the ladder are some Strange Shelves. Try to swing your broom stick and you'll be told you need something stronger. Return to the second floor.

Enter Mother's room, which is at the top of the staircase, and collect the Bat. Return to the shelves and destroy them to reveal a new entrance to the study. Place the Bird House on the desk against the wall.

Lure the Boggart

Find cracker

Return to your bedroom on the second floor and collect the Cracker from the table in the corner.

Add honey to cracker

Enter the kitchen and collect the honey from the jar next to the refrigerator, thus placing it on your cracker.

Place treat at birdhouse

Return to the study and place the honey cracker next to the birdhouse.

The Seeing Stone

Stone in a fuse box

Thimbletack is your man now. Find the stack of books (use your "Camera Center" button, if necessary, as you'll be using it a lot with Thimbletack) and press up against it to automatically climb. Next, fall through the open hole in the wall.

Here you'll be moving through the walls in order to find the Seeing Stone. I'll provide you with the route, however, it's possible you'll fall or get off track. If this is the case, look for arrows on the walls or ground to point you in the right direction so you can get back on the path.

From the hole, head left (note the arrow on the wall) and run straight over the gap. You'll automatically jump it. Run straight at the ledge and you'll automatically climb it...and spot your first Cockroach! Yuck.

To eliminate the cockroach enter "Ranged Mode" ("R1" on the PS2), aim the reticle at the roach, then hit "Throw/Attack" to toss the needle at it. Each cockroach you eliminate will be added to your Quest tally and your "Cockroaches (Thimbletack)" tally. You can always tell when a cockroach is nearby, as they make a noise. You'll always want to pop them with your needles, as, again, doing so counts toward your tally AND cockroaches can actually damage you, so it's best to do away with them.

Continue up the cockroach ledge, run forward, then pop the cockroach on the ground and the one high up on the brick wall. If necessary, collect the Faerie Fruit (health for Thimble), then turn around.

Run forward and, instead of falling down from where you came, catch the above platform. Climb the wire in the corner, then, again, turn around ("Center Camera" is a great button in this area).

Jump the gap, then jump through the hole in the chicken wire to automatically grab the above pipe. Move across it, take out the cockroach, then move across the next pipe. Pass through the hole in the wall.

Move across the gaps (pop the roach), then turn the corner at the end. Note the electrified path before you. The best way to get through it is not to think about it and just move fast. Wait until the only thing electrified before you is the panel just to your left, then run for it. You'll come close to becoming a fried brownie right before the last gap, however, if you're moving hard and fast, you'll easily jump over the electrified wire.

Please note, while your goal is to make it across unharmed, I suggest getting yourself zapped once, as you'll fall to an area with a total of 8 cockroaches AND an important skill to be learned. First, the skill...

Follow the arrows on the ground and to a playing card sitting against the wall. When you see these cards, this means you'll be able to climb the wall behind them. To do this, run at the card and hold the "Sprite Sprint" button ("X" on the PS2) for an extra boost. Doing so will speed you up and get you up that wall.

Next, the cockroaches. You should be able to find the first six pretty easily. Two are on the ground, three are on the surrounding beams and planks (although, keep in mind, they do move around, so they may not be where I found them). The other three may be shootable from this location, but it's hard to find them...if you can't wait a moment.

Back to the electrified path, or the platform just past it. Here you'll be shown the "Seeing Stone", or the metal washer. Hit it with your needle to free it, and it will roll through a pipe. Before doing anything else, look to the wall to the left of the Seeing Stone to eliminate one of the harder to find roaches.

Stone on a pipe

Approach the wing-nut and move down the wire. Cross the pipe then follow the arrows across the platforms and through the large pipe (along this path is where you'll want to keep your eyes peeled for the two remaining roaches...you should have 13 by the time you cross). Pop out on the opposite side to spot the washer again. Hit it with another needle.

The seeing stone

Fall through the pipe and pop the cockroach before you. You should spot two more climbing the distant wall, then one beneath you. To get the one below, fall to the ground and hit it. Use the card to run up the wall, where you should be able to spot another 2 cockroaches. Your total after eliminating them should be 19.

Jump to the above ledge and you'll find yourself at the bottom of the pipe again. Run up the card wall, jump to the ledge across the way, then fall into the large pipe. Move across the plank and enter the next pipe. Follow it to the room with the paint cans.

First, note that there are nine cockroaches in the room. None are difficult to find, just keep your eyes peeled and ears open as you move across and up the room. When you're satisfied with your ground work, jump up to the square platform against the wall. Climb the wire, then work your way up and around the higher platforms (where you'll spot any remaining roaches). Climb down the wire at the end, then jump across the paint cans to the washer. Collect it.

Exit the room by running up the card wall (your cockroach total should be 28). Run up the next card wall and jump, again, to the ledge across the way. This time, be careful not to fall into the pipe, and, instead move up the next card wall (note, if there's a cockroach blocking your path here, it's one you missed earlier).

Run across the high platform, then jump to the platform below. This is where you originally entered the room. Enter the pipe along the wall and return to the previous room.

From here, fall to the ground and follow the arrows back to the card wall. Run up it and continue forward. Fall to the right, then work your way forward (you're looking for your entrance/exit now). Once you spot the hole up and right of you, climb up on the ledge past it (eliminate the cockroach on the above wall, for 28), then jump at the hole in the wall. If you angle yourself correctly you'll easily jump through it.

From here, run down the desk to the chair and opt to "Go to Study".

Help from Simon

Find Simon

Simon is outside, so, exit the house. Upon doing so you'll be told to use your Seeing Stone ("R1" on the PS2). Do so to spot the many sprites and faeries around the house. Once you're done playing around with that, locate Simon near the garage.

Mr. Tibbs

Simon will provide you with your Slingshot, which works just like Thimble's needle. Simply go into Ranged Mode ("R1" on the PS2), then hit "Attack/Fire" ("X" on the PS2).

To scare Mr. Tibbs off the roof of the garage, simply aim the Slingshot at the weather vane and shoot.

Building a Monocle

Find a lens

As Scott, head into the tower above the attic and collect the Telescope Lens.

Find spectacles

The spectacles are in the study, in the same little alcove as the Vinegar.

Workbench

Also in the study...in the same alcove as the Stuffed Bird.

Tell Jared

Jared will be wondering around the house. I found him on the first floor. Speak to him.

A Monocle

Get the monocle

Return to the workbench in the study and collect the monocle.
