Welcome to Lunabean's Star Fox Assault Walkthrough and Strategy Guide. This walkthrough and strategy guide walks you through the single-player story of Nintendo's Star Fox Assault so you know where to go, what to do, and how to defeat specific enemies. It also provides you with the necessary strategies for acquiring Silver and Gold Medals, and it discloses all 50 flag locations.
Using this Walkthrough and Strategy Guide
The "walkthrough" portion of each mission explains how to get through the mission on the Bronze Level. To earn a Bronze Medal, follow the provided directions when playing the "Bronze Level". If you don't earn the necessary points the first time around, try again. Earning a Bronze is all about knowing what you're doing and doing it as efficiently as possible. Earning Silver and Gold Medals via the Silver and Gold Levels is tougher, which is why we provide specific strategies and, even, our own personal scores, so you know you're on the right track in earning the necessary score. Note, if you're having trouble earning a Bronze, check the Silver and Gold strategies, as they'll help you, too.

Your score is based on two factors: Hits and time. The number of hits you've racked up are always displayed in the top right corner of your screen. Destroying most enemies will earn you one hit point, but there are a few enemies or items which will earn you more hit points upon destruction. You also earn hit points by destroying "groups" and by stringing together "combos". You will encounter "groups" in the flying missions where the game guides you forward. Almost all enemies put before you come in a group. Often four attacks will come at you at once. Destroy them all before they fly past you, and you'll earn an extra 10 hit points. It's a very basic concept, but it becomes very important when going for Silver and Gold Medals.
You are given the opportunity to build "combos" in every mission that isn't a guided flying mission. Simply build combos by taking out enemies quickly. As you do, watch beneath your "Hits" score. Here you will find a display of your combos, along with the combo meter beneath it. If the combo meter runs out, your combo will be broken. You will earn the points from the combo you built up, but you'll have to start from zero to build your next combo. Combos become very important in earning Silver and Gold medals, as the larger they get, the more bonus hits you'll earn. For example, when you get a combo of 10, you'll earn a bonus of 5 hit points (so you really earn 15 hits for hitting 10 enemies). This goes on with every 10 hits you earn in the combo, and the bonus continues to grow. By the time you reach a 100 combo, you'll be earning an extra 30 points with every 10 hits in that combo (so you really earn 40 hits for hitting 10 enemies).
Time also plays a role in your final score, in that the faster you finish a mission the larger your time bonus will be. Note, however, this can bite you in the bum, as, if you take too long, you will actually have points deducted from your score. With this being said, I'm always one for getting a few extra hits and possible combos over coming in in a timely fashion. The points seem to rest more with the hits than the time.
Your Goal
Since this is an arcade style game, your goal is to score points and earn medals. You can only earn a medal for the difficulty level at which you are playing the game. You can select your difficulty at the beginning of "Story Mode", but, note, you have every opportunity to change it as you move on. You aren't restricted. You can also replay any mission you've passed at any time in the story. Simply select "Mission" instead of "Story" when selecting your game. From here, select the mission and the difficulty you would like to play at, and you'll be on your way. Note, however, if you want to earn all of the medals, you'll have to play each mission at each difficulty. There's no Bronze/Silver sweep for earning a Gold Medal.
Note, there are no rewards, beyond personal satisfaction, for earning all Bronze or all Gold Medals. Yet, if you earn all Silver Medals, you will unlock the 1982 Namco game "Xevious". Also note, with the completion of each level (no medal necessary), you will unlock the corresponding multi-player level. If you decide to play the multi-player game (which this guide doesn't cover), note that you unlock various bonuses with the number of multi-player matches completed. The bonuses begin with five matches completed and end with 260 matches completed. For specifics on these bonuses, I suggest visiting Gamespot's Star Fox Assault Unlockable's Page.
There are also "Friendship Medals" (yellow star medal) which can be won for each mission. You earn these medals by ensuring the safety of your partners throughout the level. If your friends are being chased, you need to shoot down those chasing them before your partner flees. You will be told by an on-screen prompt when your friends are in trouble. Earning all 10 Friendship Medals gives you Wolf for the multi-player game.
Finally, there are five hidden flags in each mission. These flags are always hidden. Flag locations are detailed in the guide, at the bottom of each mission detail. If you find all 50 flags, you will unlock the Demon Sniper (a fairly awesome Sniper Rifle) for multi-player mode.
Weapons/Power Ups
Upon picking up a new weapon you Lasers/Double Lasers Health Bombs Sniper Rifle While playing the game you'll encounter various Power Ups/Items/Weapons. The weapons are all fairly self explanatory. Your Blaster is your default ground weapon. Hold down "Shoot" to charge it up (watch the meter to the left of the reticle to see how much "charge" you have), then release to let it go. The Machine Gun and Gatling Gun work exactly as you'd expect them to, as they simply spray ammo as you hold down "Shoot" (the Gatling Gun is really just a powerful Machine Gun). The Homing Launcher (H. Launcher) is just a hand held rocket launcher of sorts. It often locks onto targets automatically for you. The Sniper Rifle is, as always, my favorite weapon. Use "X" to look through the scope and pull the L-trigger to zoom in and out.
Finally, you have the Grenades and the Sensor Bombs. The Grenades take some getting used to, as a toss carries them pretty far. Simply hold "Shoot" to pull out a Grenade (when selected). The second you pull it out is the second the Grenade becomes active. So, hold it as long as you want, but, be aware, it can explode in your hand. Release "Shoot" to toss a Grenade. As soon as you get control of the Grenades, they'll become your best friend in this game. The Sensor Bombs are really just mines you place on the ground. You can do so and hope someone walks over it, or you can set it, wait for someone or something to get close, then shoot it yourself to blow it up.

While flying you have a couple power up/weapon options, too. Always keep an eye out for Double Laser Upgrades. Some will simply turn your single laser into a double laser, making lighter work of taking down enemies. Others will turn your double lasers into very powerful blue double lasers, making easy work of taking down enemies. If you take damage while you have double lasers, to the point where one of your wings falls off, you will lose the double laser. Also, when you are without a wing, your flying will be a bit "wobbly". Find another double laser upgrade to repair your ship and regain your double laser.
In space you will also come across some Bombs. Simply hit "B" to unleash these very powerful devices. I always save at least one bomb for whatever boss fight lies ahead, but use them on large groups of enemies for many hits. And, note, if you die before using the bombs, you will lose your bombs.
If you are in space, or on the ground in your Landmaster, and you're taking damage, look for the Supplies Rings. Most are Silver rings which provide "health" to your damaged vehicle. There are some Gold Supplies Rings, too. These provide even more "health". If you are on the ground and on foot and you're taking damage, look for Health Packs (these vary in color and amount of health received).

The controls in this game are dependant upon the controller settings you opt for at the beginning of the game. You're pretty much choosing three main functions: Shoot, Move and Camera. Hit "Y" for more details. I chose the Single Stick option. You choose what's best for you. Note, however, if you're looking at the guide and the controls I say to use are different from what you're using, it's because you're not using the Single Stick option.
If you want to go back and view your specific controller details later, begin from the game's Start Menu. From here, select Options > User Settings > Select Player > "Y" Controller Details. The "Y" Controller Details will give you all you need to know about what your chosen controller options, for both land and ground missions. I suggest looking at them again once you've played through a level or two. I never looked at them, and, while writing this "Controls" section, I learned about a few controls that would have been nice to have used while actually playing the game.
With that, you're ready to begin your Star Fox Assault. Good luck and have fun!
