Super Mario Galaxy Game Guide

Introduction

How to use this guide

With the exception of the first heading, titled "The Beginning", and the last heading, titled "The End" this guide is broken up into sections based on Dome.

Your goal in this game is to collect Stars. These Stars are found in Galaxies which are housed in Domes. Domes and Galaxies are unlocked once you've acquired a certain number of Stars. For this reason there is no set path for you. You can visit new Domes and Galaxies as soon as they are unlocked.

Use the Dome headings to find the Galaxy and mission for which you need help.

Once you've collected 60 Stars you can fight the "final" battle, which can be found under the heading "The End". However, a true Mario fan will want to collect all 120 Stars.

Comets

Comets appear at random throughout the game. The appearance of these Comets opens up new missions for you in various galaxies.

Speedy Comets challenge you to go through an earlier mission within the time limit.

Cosmic Comets force you to race Cosmic Mario.

Daredevil Comets require that you make it through a mission or a battle without taking any damage.

Fast Foe Comets speed up the action of your enemies in a level.

Finally, there's the Purple Comet. Purple Comets won't appear until you've collected the first 60 Stars and defeated the final boss. Purple Comets unlock missions where you must either locate the 100 Purple Coins hidden in the level, OR you must collect 100 Coins within a time limit. They provide some of the more challenging experiences of the game.

Find Luigi

Once you have met up with Luigi he will be available for you to speak with in the Observatory. Look for him over by the Shroomship. Speak to him once and he will begin sending you letters. Each letter will include a photo of where Luigi has a Power Star for you. Once you have the photo, you can seek out that Star.

The Beginning

Gateway Galaxy

Begin your Mario adventure by running up the path ahead. Grab the Star Bits as you go (collect 50 Star Bits for a "1-Up"). As you approach the castle you'll encounter an obstacle in the form of Bowser, the Space Pirate. After the cutscene, continue to make your way to the castle, where you'll encounter a second cutscene. This one will land you on another planet.

Grand Star Rescue

Follow the white rabbit's instruction and "Jump" with "A". Follow him to his rabbit friends, then seek the three out. There's no guarantee that the rabbits will hide in the same place each time, but I found one in the pipe, one in the crater, and one in an area of trees. Once you find a rabbit, chase after it until you catch it. Once you've caught all three, climb to the top of the structure and speak to Rosalina. Rosalina will reward you with Luma, who gives you the power to Spin (shake the Wii-mote).

Spin into the crystals in front of you. When they're all broken a Launch Star will be revealed. Spin into the Launch Star to be launched to the nearby planet. Speak to the Luma and you'll be told to collect Star Chips to fix the Launch Star she had prepared for you. Search the small planet for the five Star Chips, none of which are hard to find (one is in a crystal that you must break). Once all five have been collected, run to the Launch Star. Jump into the middle of it a Spin to be launched to the next planet.

Locate the trapped Luma and find the Key to free her by fighting the various Goombas. (Note, if you want to use the "Spin", Spin into your enemies then run into them when they are stunned. Otherwise, jump on top of them as you have so many times in previous Mario games).

Once free, the Luma will transform into a Sling Star. Jump and Spin in it to be launched to the next planet, and the next trapped Star. Like before, take out all of the Goombas in the area, including the Mega Goomba (just Spin and run into him), and collect the Key to free the Star. If you take damage along the way, heal yourself by collecting Coins.

Once you've freed the Luma, run to it and slip down the pipe. Here you'll be told you must save the Grand Star before it's too late. To save the Grand Star you must stop the machine from running. To do this, locate all 16 floor panels and step on them so they are blue (inactive). Twelve of the floor panels form a square surrounding the Grand Star. The other four can be found on the four sides of the room, each one beneath a moving platform. Once all 16 of the panels have been deactivated, the machine will stop and the Grand Star will become accessible. Jump into it to collect it.

For this you will unlock the Terrace Dome. Once the cutscene comes to an end, make your way to the nearest dome and enter. Inside, the Luma will transform into a Pull Star. Aim your Wii-mote at it and hit "A". You'll be shown the galaxies that can be observed from the dome. At this point you only have enough Stars to travel to "1". So, select it to reveal the Good Egg Galaxy. Opt to "Fly" there.

The Terrace Dome

Good Egg Galaxy

Dino Piranha

Take out the enemies ahead and explore the small planet. Collect Star Bits as you find them (remember, collect 50 for a 1-Up). Take note of Luma's tip to point your Wii-mote at those Star Bits you can't reach to collect them. Once you're done exploring, make your way to the top of the tower and jump into the Launch Star. Spin and you'll be sent to the next planet.

Here, simply avoid the boulders as you locate the five Star Chips. Be aware that the surrounding pools of green sludge are safe to walk through, but they will slow you down. Once all five Chips have been collected a new Launch Star will form. Use it to reach the third planet.

Take out the two enemies and a vine will sprout. Before climbing it, move to the underside of the planet and grab the "?" Coin. This will produce many Star Bits. Follow them to the vine, then climb the vine by Spinning up it. Climb to the end to fall on the fourth planet.

Watch out for the mini blue Brain Suckers (Spin to take them out), then make your way along the green path, all of the way up to the purple Piranha Plant. To defeat the Plant, wait for it to slam its head onto the ground, then quickly Spin into the nearest tree, forcing the tree to bonk the Plant. Climb the resulting vine and fall down to the fifth planet.

Spin into the creature creating the footprints for many Star Bits, then move to the other side of the planet. Climb the blocks to the crystal at the top. Shatter it and hop into the revealed Launch Star. Use it to reach the sixth planet, where you will meet Dino Piranha.

To defeat Dino Piranha you must first reveal Dino Piranha. To do this, simply Spin into the ball at the end of the cracked egg's tail, thus breaking the egg completely. Once the Piranha is revealed, continue with the tail ball Spins until Dino goes down (three more hits). Note, the plant will move faster with each hit, making it harder to catch the ball. If you find yourself having a hard time, don't follow the ball from behind. Instead, try to cut it off by coming at it from an angle.

Collect the revealed Star and you'll be returned to the Terrace Dome. Here, the Luma will teach you how to use your Star Bits as a weapon (or feed them to hungry Lumas). Collect them as you normally would (run into them or point your Wii-mote at them), then shoot them by aiming with your Wii-mote and pulling the "B" trigger. Test this out by collecting the above Star Bits and shooting them at the Luma. Once complete, take aim at the Pull Star and return to the Good Egg Galaxy.

A Snack of Cosmic Proportions

Collect all of the Star Bits that you can on this planet (and every planet you encounter on this trek), as you'll soon need to feed 100 of them to a hungry Luma. Once you are satisfied with your collection, move up the curved stone bridge to the top where you'll encounter a blue Luma. The Luma will reveal a path of Pull Stars. Point at the closest one and hit "A" to be pulled to it. Continue pulling yourself to the Pull Stars until you are in the middle of the Launch Star. Once here, Spin to be launched to the second planet. Free the Launch Star atop it and use it to reach the third planet.

Collect the various Star Bits then smash the crystal to reveal the next Launch Star. Use it to reach the fourth planet, then feed the Luma the 100 Star Bits you desire, thus creating a new planet (the 4th). Use the Launch Star to reach it.

Make your way up the cliffs (use the rubber tree on the spikes to gain access to the 1-Up), and Spin into the rubber tree to clear the crates (although you can Spin into them) and the Spikes from your path. Launch off the top to the 5th planet.

The 5th planet is a glass capsule of sorts. To enter the capsule, smash all of the crystal spikes you find at the surface. One of the smashed spikes will reveal a hole. Fall through it and make your way to the right. Once you reach the red section you'll fall up (note that the arrows in each colored section tell you what direction you will fall). Continue to the blue section and you'll fall down. Continue making your way around in this fashion until you reach the moving platforms. Once there, wait for the platforms to fall, then run along the red section to the opposite side. If the platforms push you onto the blue below, you'll have to start all over again.

Cross the red and fall down into the next section. Head right and avoid the moving platform for a 1-Up, then fall back down to the red and work your way left. Follow the blue section to the Launch Star at the top. Use it to reach the 6th planet.

Work your way around all sides of the plant to collect all 5 Star Chips. Once this is complete, you will have access to the Star. To collect it, stand so the star is directly between you and a Pull Star. Pull yourself to the Pull Star and move through the Star to automatically grab it.

With three Stars now in your collection, you will unlock the Honeyhive Galaxy. You can go there if you want right now. However, this walkthrough will be taking you to the third Star in the Good Egg Galaxy first.

King Kaliente's Battle Fleet

Enter the house in front of you by moving to the backside of it, flipping to the opposite side, and slipping down the orange pipe. Once inside, move along the walls by walking across the wooden arrow markers. Work your way down to the "?" and activate it. Collect the rainbow colored notes as they are played. At the end a 1-Up will be revealed. Catch it before it disappears. Exit out the opposite pipe from which you entered and you'll end up on the roof. Use the Launch Star to sail to the second planet.

Free Toad from the Crystal for a tip on taking out the Spiky Things (roll one of the green coconuts in front of one and shake your Wii-mote to send the coconut to the Spiky Thing). Take out all of the Spiky Things on the planet using this method until you reveal a sling Star. Use it to reach the third planet.

Spin a coconut into the large Pokey, thus shooting his body parts deep into space. Spin into his stuck head to finish him off, then use the resulting Launch Star to reach the fourth planet. Once there, avoid the rolling Chomp-Chomps and hop into the green pipe. Take out the Goombas then run through the "?" Coin to reveal a Rainbow Star. Run through the star to activate its invincibility powers, then return through the pipe and run into the Chomp-Chomps, thus providing you with many Star Bits. Spin into the Launch Star to hit Planet #4.

Jump the electrified fences and make your way toward the green side of the planet. An electrified fence along a bronze border will keep you from getting there. Simply run along it until you spot a section with an electrified ball in lieu of a fence. When the ball moves out of the way, slip past it and enter the green side. The green side is dangerous, as both Chomp-Chomps and Bullet Bills will be coming your way. Stay out of the path of the Chomp-Chomps, and try to lead Bullet Bills into obstacles. There are many Coins in the area just in case you have problems with this.

Work your way up the stone blocks until you reach the Crystals at the top of the mystery machine. Smash them then use the Launch Star to reach the Space Pirate Ship.

The Piranhas across the way will immediately send coconuts at you. Spin into them to launch them back. When the Piranhas go down a bridge will drop. Cross it.

Smack the glowing crate across the way for a Health Shroom (increases your health to 6), then fight your way up the right side to the Launch Star. Use it to reach the 5th planet. Speak to the Luma and she'll explain the lights on the ground. Simply shoot them with your Star Bits to reveal a Coin, which is helpful if your health is running low.

Move to the other side of the planet and you'll encounter the Good Egg Galaxy Boss, King Kaliente. To defeat King Kaliente you must wait for him to spit a green coconut your direction, then spin into it to send it back at the Octomonster. Occasionally the big guy will block the coconut and send it back to you. Be prepared to return the favor. Avoid the fiery coconuts, and look out for the blue Brain Suckers he sends out your way. If your health runs low, return to the lights next to Luma and shoot your Star Bits at them for coins. Hit King Kaliente five times to take him out. Collect your Star reward.

Make your way to the fountain at the top of the hill and collect the "?" Coin. This will create a Bee Mushroom in the area below. Make your way down there and collect the Mushroom to become Bee Mario. As Bee Mario you can fly. Do so by pressing and holding "A". Note the "Fly" meter to your right. When it runs out of juice, you'll fall back to the ground. You should also note that the effects of the Bee Mushroom only last for a short period of time. If you find you need the Mushroom again, just return to the spot from which you originally collected it.

Fly to the top of the tall platform behind the Bee Mushroom, then fly through the opening above it. Take out the Bugs, then fall through the tree stump hole. Slide down the ramp, free the Bee Shroom, and fly to the above platform. Work your way across the next set of platforms to the Launch Star at the end. Jump in to reach the 2nd planet.

Grab the Bee Shroom then work your way over to the tall flower stem (next to the bee), and Spin your way up it. Once at the top, fly from the first flower platform to the one with all of the Star Bits on it. Collect those Bits, then fly to the flower platform above it. Use the Launch Star to reach the third planet.

Spin and smack the bud to the right of you, then spin up its vine. Collect the Star Bits and the Bee Shroom, then fly to the platform to the right. You'll find yourself right where you started. Fly up to one of the sticky sections of the above honey wall and climb up. Once you reach an unsticky part, fly to the sticky section above it and continue your climb. Work your way up to the platform with the Piranha Plant on it. Pop the plant and climb up the resulting vine to the large Bee who asks that you cure the bees' itchiness problem. Alrighty.

Fly at the large bee and land on the furry part of her body. (If you need more Bee Juice, there's a Bee Shroom below. Just don't get wet while in the Bee costume, or you'll lose it). Climb around the large bee collecting the five Star Chips attached to her. Once collected, use the Launch Star to reach the fourth planet.

Approach the red Toad for the Power Star.

Upon completing this mission you'll unlock a new Galaxy (the Loopdeeloop Galaxy). What's more, Rosalina will let you know your friends are waiting for you at the Garage. Make your way there to discover a starship is in the process of being built for you. Destroy the crate for a 1-Up, then return to the Terrace Dome and the Honeyhive Galaxy.

Trouble on the Tower

Return to the fountain and speak to the bee in the back corner. He'll tell you that you can break the circular stones in the area by jumping above them and hitting "Z" while in the air. Try it out, then work your way back down the path to the second circular stone. Smash it and Spin your way up the vine to the next vine. Spin down it to solid ground.

Slam the stone here to reveal a spring board. Slam it to reach the "?" block above. Repeat until it runs out of Star Bits. Head to the next spring board and use it to catch the Sling Star above. Sling to the higher level. If you need health, shoot the sprouts to your right with Star Bits, otherwise, head to the caterpillar. Knock him over and Slam him to get rid of him, then Slam the button to create a bridge. Cross it.

Slam the wooden pedestal to lower the platforms behind you. Climb them and read the sign to learn how to wall jump. To wall jump, all you must do is jump at a sticky wall, to which you'll stick automatically for a few seconds. While sticking, hit "A" to quickly jump to the next wall. Try this out by climbing to the top of the platforms and jumping to the left wall. Work your way up to the top then move up the hill. Once there, stand between the two walls with the Launch Star high between them, then wall jump up to it. Launch yourself to the 2nd planet.

Take out the Piranha Plants as you make your way to the flat underside of this planet. Once there, jump and slam to land on the flat panel below. Collect all of the Star Bits. Work your way down the next section, eliminating the caterpillars as you go. Hop into the Sling Star at the top to sling yourself to the next section.

Hop into the tree stump and you'll land back on top of the first planet.

Speak to the bee to learn of the Mandibugs on the observation deck. Work your way up to the deck by using the nearby trapeze. If you miss it on the initial jump, then use the spring board below to catch it. Swing the trapeze. Then, when you get enough height, jump to the next level.

Head left and you'll run into your first Mandibug. Simply Slam it to make it disappear, then Slam the red button to the left of it to get the windmill spinning. Ride one of the windmill platforms to the top to discover your second (and third) Mandibug.

To take care of these two bugs, deal with them just as you did before. Jump and Slam their backs. If they move to fast when they charge you, get them when they recoil. It's that easy. If you have trouble with this and are running low on health, make use of the ground lights by shooting them with Star Bits. You will be rewarded with Coins.

Once the Mandibugs have been eliminated, collect the Power Star.

Big Bad Bugaboom

Return to the fountain where you'll find a Bubble Maker. Jump into a bubble and ride it across to the next area. Take out the Madibug in the circle and grab the resulting Health Mushroom. Hop down to the area below and eliminate the enemies. Popping the Mandibug farthest from you will result in a pipe shortcut back to the start of the level. Grab the Bee Mushroom and take the pipe there. Fly over the three Bubble Makers and up the cliff behind them. Fly into the next window and eliminate the Mandibugs here. Use the Launch Star to reach the second planet.

Grab the Bee Mushroom and Spin climb the flower. Once you're tossed off, fly toward the platform ahead. Spin climb the flower here and fly to solid ground. Here you will meet the Large Mandibug.

To defeat the Large Mandibug, you must fight him just as you have the previous Mandibugs. The only difference is you will need to make use of your Bee slam him. So, first, take note of the Bee Mushroom to your right. Grab it as you need it. Next, hover over the Mandibug, then Slam him with "Z". Enjoy the resulting Star Bits. At this point the Mandibug will begin to fly around the area. Fly up to his back and climb up. Jump and Slam. Next, the Mandibug will fly around on his side. Avoid his belly projectiles as you hover along. Wait for the Mandibug's back to flatten (or land on his head), then jump and slam his back one more time. This will result in the Power Star.

The collection of this 7th Power Star will result in a new Galaxy (Flipswitch Galaxy) and a hungry Luma.

Time for some Ray Surfing! Speak to the large penguin (the Coach). Follow the on-screen instructions to surf. Point straight at the screen with your Wii-mote to guide the Ray straight ahead. Twist the Wii-mote to the left to move left and to the right to move right. Hold "A" to speed up. It's that easy. Practice by surfing forward to the end of the tunnel.

Now it's time to race! You have two goals here. First, you must beat the time of 1 minute 30 seconds. Second, you must stay on course. If you fall off you'll lose a life. So, focus primarily on controlling your little Ray. The water is going to be choppy and you may find yourself getting close to the edge. If this happens, let go of "A" to regain control. Even if you take your time, you should have no problem beating the record. When you do you'll earn the Power Star.

Flipswitch Galaxy

Painting the Planet Yellow

Your goal here is to simply activate all of the blue panels by moving across them, thus turning them yellow. As you go you must avoid the many obstacles (electrified fences, radiating circles, spiked platforms). If you return to any one panel, you'll turn it back to blue. You can make use of the spiked platforms by riding them (just avoid the spikes) over panels you've already activated.

There are three sides to this Planet. Begin by running to the left side. Use the platform to help you turn all of the panels yellow. Return to the top, then work your way down to the front side. Again, make use of the platform to activate the panels. Once all panels turn yellow the Power Star will appear. Collect it by jumping on the platform beneath it.

Bower Jr.'s Robot Reactor

Megaleg's Moon

On this tiny planet you must deal with the Shells and the Bullet Bills. To defeat the Shells, Spin into them once to flip them over, then Spin into them a second time to send them through one of the holes in the ground. To defeat the Bullet Bills, you must run in front of them and lead them to an obstacle. Once you reach that obstacle, dodge behind it for protection. If done correctly, the Bullet will hit the obstacle instead of you. Guide the Bullet Bills to the three glass domes. One will reveal a 1-Up, one three coins, and one the Launch Star. Collect the items then launch to the next planet.

On this next planet you will meet Megaleg, Bowser Jr.'s Robot Reactor (hence, the title). Note there are a few light panels on the ground. Shoot them with Star Bits for Coins, if necessary. Next, run to one of Megaleg's stomping legs and wait for it to stomp. When it does, jump on and run up the side with green (now red) arrows. Avoid the obstacles as you go, cross the gears, and eventually you'll reach a large dome. Move down a bit to get the attention of one of the Bullets Bills, then lead it to the dome. Repeat two more times to free the Grand Star.

With the release of the Grand Star you will open up the Fountain Dome. Before heading there, make your way to the Hungry Star outside the Terrance Dome (on your way you may care to speak to Toad who is carrying a letter from Peach for 5 1-Up Shrooms. Once you get to the Hungry Star, feed it 400 Star Bits and a Launch Star will be created.
