LB Introduction

Our "Tony Hawk's Underground 2" Walkthrough and Strategy Guide will take you through Story Mode and all 140 Classic Mode goals on "Normal" difficulty. The easier modes are only easier and the "Sick" mode is only harder, but every goal remains the same. This guide does not include a list of gaps. We've never been fond of finding gaps. It's boring, pointless, and a cheap way to extend the play of this fairly short game, in our opinion, of course. If you like finding gaps, more power to you. For help, go to your Pause menu and you'll find a list of all of the gaps. The names will give you a clue as to where they are.

This walkthrough was written playing the Xbox version of the game. However, the Xbox, Playstation 2 and GameCube versions are identical, excluding, obviously, the controls. Luckily, THUG does an excellent job of telling you the controls for each and every trick as you go along. Through the strategy guide we do reference some Xbox controls specifically, but we do encompass all of the control configurations by referring to the buttons as "Grind", "Flip", "Grab" and "Jump". We do this because rarely in the game are the controls an issue (as they are displayed atop the screen), but the timing is. Our guide will teach you the timing of your tricks. What's most important is that you pay attention to your on-screen directions for button guidance. Here is a breakdown of the Xbox controls. They are strikingly similar to the control set up of the PS2 and the Gamecube. If you aren't certain about what button you should be hitting, check the goal (it will often define specific moves), go to your Trick List, or return to Training.

Example:
Xbox "THUG" Controls:

This guide takes you through every goal of Story Mode, and provides tips for all 140 goals of Classic Mode. We suggest starting with Story Mode, as actions you take in Story Mode will help you obtain your goals in Classic Mode. To make it through Story Mode you must earn 500 points in every level. Our guide tells you how to get all of the points in every level.

While writing this guide we tried to make no assumptions in your previous "Tony Hawk" experience. The only tip that may be missing through the guide is clarity in how to score high points. High points are all about performing combos, or linking tricks together. We are huge fans of grinding circular structures, like pools, then modifying our grinds (double tap your "Grind", "Flip Trick", or "Grab Trick" while in a grind) over and over and over again. Modifying lip tricks (stalled grinds), is another great way to score high points. Finally, if you're without a good grinding area, connect tricks by landing in Manual (Up on your control pad, then down on your control pad). Sometimes it's easiest to land in a Manual if you pull a Revert (R-trigger on the Xbox) between your landing and the Manual. And never forget the power of the Caveman. A Caveman is a dismount in the middle of a combo. You have a short time to run somewhere or to regain your composure before you pop back on your board to continue your trick. Use the Caveman.

This guide does not include cheats nor codes, simply because we cannot answer any cheat code questions you may have. We didn't write the cheats and we don't use cheats. However, if you want the cheat codes (and there's nothing wrong with that), please go here: Gamecube THUG 2 Cheats | PS2 THUG 2 Cheats | Xbox THUG 2 Cheats.

Tutorial

Welcome to Tony and Bam's World Destrution Tour! I hope it didn't scare you too bad. You are with Mr. Hawk. Thank goodness.

You are automatically placed in a training area. By now the game pretty much assumes you've played a "Tony Hawk" title before. Whether you have or you haven't, start skating around to get the feel. Once you have "the feel", speak to Rodney Mullen, who is standing in the lower area, between the taxi and the rail.

Learn to Ollie
Rodney will first teach you to "Ollie", or "Jump". You Ollie by hitting your "Jump" button. Do it three times.

Manual
Manuals are performed by quickly moving your control stick (or pad) up, then down. You then must maintain balance by gently pushing the stick up and down so the manual indicator stays as close to the center as possible. Make it through the two sets of orange cones to continue. Also note that it's best to ollie or jump into your manual. It gives you more speed and, therefore, more balance.

Grind the rail
Skate forward to the rail in front of you, jump at it, then hit your "Grind" button. Again, balance by using your control stick.

No Comply over the taxi/Boneless over the taxi
The "No Comply" is defined as (Up Arrow + Jump). This means quickly tap "up" on your control pad just before releasing the "Jump" button. Perform a "No Comply" over the taxi. When you do so successfully you'll be asked to perform a Boneless (Up Arrow + Up Arrow + Jump) over the taxi. This means tap "up" on the control pad twice, just before releasing the "Jump" button.

Kickflip over the gap
Now it's time to perform a trick. The Kickflip is first. A Kickflip is defined as (Left Arrow + Flip Trick Button). Here the "+" sign means what a "+" sign should mean, and that's "hit these two buttons at the same time". So, get some speed, hit your "Jump" button to crouch, release it to jump the gap, then press left on your control pad right as you hit your flip trick button (on the Xbox, for example, hit left on your D-pad as you hit the "X" button).

Lip the QP
Locate Bob Burnquist in the half pipe and speak to him in order to activate your next set of tricks. First is the "Lip" trick. Skate to the top of the half pipe. Try to approach the "lip" or top edge from a 90 degree angle. This will prevent a grind. When you reach the lip, hit your "Grind" button.

QP Grind
Here you're doing the exact same trick as you did before, but approach it from an angle. This will cause you to "grind" the lip instead of pausing on top of it.

Melon off a vert
Now you'll be introduced to your "Grab trick" button. The "Melon" is defined as (Left Arrow + Grab Trick Button). So, skate up the half pipe. Jump off the top if you want (you'll get more air this way). When you get some air, press left on your control pad while you hit your "Grab Trick" button. You will perform a Melon.

Learn to spin
To spin, get some air and press right or left on your control pad. Keep it pressed until you've completed a 360 degree turn.

Get out of a half pipe.
To exit a half pipe, or cross over any "spine", skate to the top of the halp pipe, jump and pull your R-trigger and L-trigger at the same time (note that this will be different with the PS2 as the PS2 has two L-triggers and two R-triggers, check the top of your screen for specifics).

QP transfer
Simply skate and jump at an angle from one flashing blue ramp to the other flashing blue ramp.

Sticker Slap the walls
Locate Chad Muska and speak to him. He'll tell you to place five stickers. To do this, simply skate directly at any wall, jump at it, then hit "jump" again as you hit the wall. Do this five times.

Tear down the wall
Locate Mike Vallely and speak to him. You'll be performing a grind into a sticker slap. Grind the flashing blue QP in front of you. At the end, jump at the wall then hit "Jump" again to sticker slap it.

Open the door
Next up is the wallride. Wallriding can be tough as it requires approaching walls at a specific angle. You want to be almost parallel, but not quite. Jump at the wall and hit your "Grind" button. If successful, you will ride the wall. Ride the wall into the large red button.

Wallie and grind the rail
Find Bam in this newly opened area and speak with him. He'll teach you the "Wallie". Do a wallride along the spraypainted plywood across from him. At the peak of your wallride, hit the "jump" button to "Wallie". In addition, after your "Wallie" you are expected to grind the rail. Make sure you have decent speed so you can reach the rail.

Fun with tomatoes
Locate Eric Koston. He'll tell you to pick up the tomatoes and toss them at the rather large and half-naked man. Go to the tomato palatte and pick up the tomatoes. You get 10 tomatoes by doing so. Aim at him (generally point yourself in his direction), and toss your tomatoes using the button indicated at the top of your screen.

Caveman time
Mike Vallely is your man again. Locate him and he'll teach you how to dismount from your board. This is very controller specific move. On the Xbox you are to hit the "black" button. Simply do so (or hit whatever button/s your screen is indicating). Next, jump, then, while in the air, hit your dismount button again to get back on your board.

Jump on the crates
To jump onto a crate, dismount (if you aren't already), face the crate and hit "Jump" and "Up" on your control pad at the same time. To get onto the higher crates, hit the jump button twice while pressing up on the control pad.

Jump and hang
Do perform a wall hang, run and jump at a ledge. Hit the designated "grab" button to catch the ledge, then press "Up" on your control pad to pull yourself up. In this case you'll need to do a double jump to make it to the ledge.

Climb the ladder
Walk into ladders and press "Up" to climb them.

Shimmy to the opening
Walk slowly over ledges, and you'll automatically catch them as you fall. Use your control pad left or right to shimmy in the direction you want to go. Shimmy across the sign then pull yourself up, into the opening.

Acid drop
To perform this trick, skate to the edge, jump, then follow your on-screen directions to perform the acid drop (L-trigger + R-trigger on the Xbox).

My first combo
Locate Chad Muska. Your first combo deals with grinding what's in front of you. Grind the QP, jump to the rail, grind the rail, jump to the next QP, and grind it.

Side jumping combo
This combo is very similar to the last one, but your between jumps are going to put you on a different rail. So, grind the QP. Jump while pressing left on your control pad. This will take you to the left rail. Grind it. At the end, jump off while pressing right on your control pad, and grind the QP.

Tag the place
Again, find Chad. He'll tell you to locate the five tag spots (glowing X spot posters). You are to "tag" them by walking up to them (dismount), then hitting your "tag" button. All five tag spots are in the immediate area. One is up high, requiring that you climb the yellow pipe in the corner to make your way up to it.

Hang'n Tag
You've made your way up here before, simply do it again. Climp up the double crates, run and double jump to catch the platform in the water. Pull yourself up and climb the ladder to the top. Slowly walk over the ledge and you'll hang. Shimmy over to the sign, then hit your "tag" button.

Skitch the forklift
Chad Muska, yet again. Locate him and he'll tell you to "skitch" the forklift for 10 seconds. To "skitch" is to hang on to the back of a moving object. Through the game you will most often be skitching on the back of cars. Simply approach the object and hit "up" on your control stick (or pad). That's all that needs to happen for you to grab on. Then, watch your balance meter and use your control stick to keep the meter from going off either side. Skitch the forklift for 10 seconds to complete this goal.

Spine transfer the fun box
Locate Bam. He'll tell you to "Spine Transfer" over the funbox and into the pool. Simply skate up the QP, jump, follow your on-screen directions to "Spine Transfer" (L-trigger + R-trigger on the Xbox) over the glowing blue funbox, and land in the pool.

Hip transfer
Here you're doing the same thing, however you are approaching your jump from an angle, so you actually land around the corner, instead of on the opposite side.

Vert WallPlant session
Locate Bob Burnquist. He'll teach you how to "Vert WallPlant". To accomplish such a task you need to ride the QP in front of you (again, the goal is to approach it straight, or perpendicular to the QP), jump at the top, then hit your "Jump" button again to perform the Vert WallPlant. It's all about being straight.

Do a real combo
Locate Bam. He'll tell you exactly what he's looking for: Go up the QP, jump and do a "Grab Trick" (any one will do, just hit your "Grab" button + any direction on your control pad to register one). Upon landing, perform a Revert (R-trigger on the Xbox), then go straight into a Manual (Up then down on your control stick). It may take a few tries, but it's supposed to be a tad difficult.

Do a McTwist
Speak to Bam again. He'll teach you about the Special Meter. The Special Meter is at the top of your screen and fills up as you perform trick (performing combos make it fill up faster). Fill up your Special Meter by performing any tricks you so desire, then perform a McTwist (Right Arrow, Down Arrow + Grab Button). This trick format means you should get some air beneath you, then press right on your control pad, followed by pressing down on your control pad while hitting your "Grab" button.

Do a Backflip
Next you'll have to do a backflip. Get some air beneath you. Hold you "Grab" button and press down on your control pad twice, while holding that "Grab" button. Note that frontflips are done by holding your "Grab" button and pressing the control pad up twice.

Do a Roll
The roll is performed in the same way the backflip and frontflip are performed. However, instead of pressing up twice or down twice, you're pressing right or left twice. Get some good air, hold your "Grab" button and press right twice to roll.

Keep the focus
Speak to Tony Hawk, who is up near your entrance. He teaches you about "Focus Control" (or slow-motion). To get focus control fill your Special Meter then start a combo. From here, hit your designated focus button. On the Xbox that button is the white button. You have to maintain focus for five seconds. This does not mean you have to do it in five consecutive seconds.

Arcade machine high score
The arcads machine is opened up about half-way through performing these tricks. It's close to your kickflip ramp, by the red Quicksilver poster. Approach it to play. You have to beat 3000 points in 60 seconds. This will be cake for someone who has made it through this beginning tutorial.

Upon completing all of your goals, return to Tony Hawk and say "Yes", you're ready to get started. Note, you can leave at any time, as this is training. However, you will have to prove you can use the new addition to the Tony Hawk series, the Focus, before leaving.
