If you liked "Tony Hawk's Underground" you're going to love "Tony Hawk's Underground 2". Activision and Neversoft have teamed up once again to bring us a story-centric Tony Hawk experience. In "THUG 2" you pick up right where you left off; celebrating your victorious skating skills in New Jersey. Since you are now a supreme skater, it only seems right that Tony Hawk and Bam Margera abduct you and make you skate with them on a tour of the world's best skate parks and cities.
The gameplay in "THUG 2" will be familiar to all of you who have played previous "Tony Hawk" games, although there are a few differences. The first difference is "Focus" mode: a slo-mo mode where time slows down and pulling off tricks becomes much easier. This mode is especially helpful when balancing a long manual or a long grind. Another difference are the secret characters who each have their own mode of transportation. For example, Jesse James has a tricked out Segway Scooter, the Native in Australia rides a Go-Kart, Bigfoot has a powered skateboard, Steve-O rides a mechanical bull, the Witch Doctor rides a tricycle. You'll have to play as each of these characters using their mode of transportation making for sometimes fun and sometimes frustrating gameplay. Each level also contains a special guest character such as Ben Franklin, a Jester, a Grafitti Tagger, and a Bull Fighter. In additon to the secret character and the special guest, you'll play as the Pro and as You in each level. The access to four playable characters per level does make for varied gameplay and works to shake things up a bit.
The levels in "THUG2" are exactly what you'd expect: they're small in size but full of places to skate and trick. For example, the Boston level is about 2 city blocks large and is an amalgamation of Boston's most famous landmarks such as the Commons, the Statehouse, the Freedom Trail, Government Center, and of course "T" stations (subway). I expect the next generation of Tony Hawk games to be much more expansive in level size. I'm thinking of a GTA-style city, huge in scale, where you could skate all day and never hit the same spot. But, for now, the levels work well and are enjoyable.
In addition to the six new levels of "THUG2" there are many "old school" levels in the "Classic Mode". Classic Mode allows you to play through the game by completing classic Tony Hawk goals such as "S-K-A-T-E" and "C-O-M-B-O" and completing high score challenges. Classic Mode is fun and is a good addtion to the new levels.
There are also some features in the game that I don't get too excited about, but some will; basically the customization features. These include a new "tagging" element ot the game where you can "tag" any surface you like. You can customize your "tag" with the tag editor and make it say whatever you like. More customization features include the ability to customize your skater, clothes, and board, all with you're own symbols. Another major feature of the game is the ability to create your own level and create your own goals. You can even send your goals to a friend and have him/her try to complete the goals.
All in all, this is a fun game. If you've played previous "Tony Hawk" games, you'll feel right at home with this one. There is something comforting about being able to pick up the controller and get right into it without learning anything new. If you're new to the series, well, this might be a bit daunting to you, but don't worry. Once you get the hang of jumping, landing, manualing, and lip tricking, you'll be all set. Like we say with all "Tony Hawk" games: if you liked the last one, you'll like this one.
