Tony Hawk's Proving Ground (THPG) Game Guide

Introduction

This walkthrough was written playing the Xbox 360 version of the game. However, the Playstation 3 version is identical, excluding, obviously, the controls. Luckily, THPG does an excellent job of telling you the controls for each and every trick as you go along. Through the strategy guide we do reference some Xbox 360 controls specifically, but we do encompass all of the control configurations by referring to the buttons as "Grind", "Flip", "Grab", "Manual", and "Jump".

We do this because rarely in the game are the controls an issue, but the timing is. Our guide will teach you the timing of your tricks. What's most important is that you pay attention to your on-screen directions for button guidance.

Button Controls

If you would like to see the buttons for each and every trick in the game, go to the Pause Menu and choose My Skater >> Trick Controls. Here you can view everything to do with buttons and tricks as well as view Tutorial Videos. If you're stuck with a particular trick, this is where you want to go.

If you aren't comfortable with the controls you can go to the Pause Menu. From here, choose Options >> Control Setup.

Goals Menu and Navigating Around

If at any time during the game you're not sure where to go or what to do you can go to the Pause Menu >> My Goals. Here you can see your Current Episodes (current objectives) or see a breakdown of objectives by category: Career, Hardcore, Rigger, Street, and Gaps.

This is where you come if you want to see the location of goals that you've already completed so that you can find them again (use the "toggle waypoint" feature to help you).

Also, during gameplay, if you click down on the Right Stick you'll get a list of all available objectives. Select an objective and then click down on the Right Stick to create a Navigation Arrow which will lead you to that objective. This can be pretty handy.

If you're still having trouble, you can go into Pause >> Options >> Display Options and then enable the Compass.

Intro to Style! Inner-City Philadelphia

Learn Rigging (Rigging Objective)

Skate forward (hold the "Jump/Ollie" button and steer with the Left Control Stick) to the character who is glowing purple. Talk to him.

The cutscene will teach you the basics of Rig-A-Kit. Rig-A-Kit, or Moveable Pieces, allows you to choose a piece of equipment (like a quarter pipe or a rail) and then place it into the environment anywhere you choose. You can manipulate, turn, increase the height of, etc. each piece of equipment. There are 200 pieces of equipment total and you can use up to 30 at any given time. You have to unlock them to use them.

To enter the Rig-A-Kit menu hit the "Back" button ("Select" on Playstations). Once in this editor menu you'll see that the Kicker Ramp is automatically selected. Move the Kicker down the street and place it in front of the car on the left side of the street (it has a bouncing Camera icon above it). Skate down the street and jump off the ramp (hold "Jump" button to skate, release "Jump" button to jump) and go over the car. Make sure that you go through the Film Icon above the car.

You'll have to jump the second car. Enter the Rig-A-Kit menu, slide the kicker ramp down the street, rotate it (reference the button controls on the right of the screen), and set it down in front of the car. Jump the car.

You'll have to jump the third car. Do the same thing as the previous car and the objective will end.

You'll earn Riktor Peeps Riot. You'll unlock the Rigger Menu skill.

Learn Nail-The-Trick (Career Objective)

Skate down the road to the character who is glowing green. Talk to him.

Nail-The-Trick mode allows you to directly control your skater's feet and enters you into a Slo-Mo sequence. To perform a Nail-The-Trick, get some air and then click down on both the Left and Right Control Sticks simultaneously.

Once in Slo-Mo the Left Control Stick controls the skater's foot on the left of the screen and the Right Control Stick does the same for the foot on the right side of the screen. If you push and hold either stick in any direction you'll do a board flip. Wait for the board to be right-side-up again and you can release the stick and put your foot back on the board.

When the objective starts up, skate down the road and jump off of the Kicker Ramp. While in the air click down on both the Right and Left Stick. Just wait and you'll automatically land it.

The next part is the same as what you just did, except you'll want to pull down on the Right Control Stick while in the air to do a Kick Flip. When the board returns right-side-up release the Control Stick back to neutral and you'll put your feet back on the board and land.

The next trick you'll learn is the Shove-it. Do the same thing as before but this time push and hold the Left Control Stick up.

The next trick you'll learn is the Impossible: hold right on the Right Control Stick.

Up next you'll be told that you can make up your own tricks by moving both Control Sticks (at the same time) in whatever direction you choose. You'll get to try this out. The game suggests you push the Left Control Stick left and the Right Control Stick up.

The next lesson is to learn Branching. This means stringing tricks together. Start it by doing a Heelflip (up on the Right Stick) and then, when the board is nearly right-side-up, a Shove-it (down on the Left Stick).

After all of that learning you'll need to impress Arto by landing a 2,000 point trick. Just go crazy and push the Control Sticks in whatever direction while in the air. Make sure that you end the trick when the board is flat.

You'll earn Money and Gold Rings. You'll unlock Nail The Trick.

Learn the Aggro Kick (Hardcore Objective)

Skate around until you see the character who is glowing orange. If you're having trouble finding him, use the "My Goals" area in the Pause Menu.

The Aggro Kick is a way to gain speed. It requires you to hit the "Aggro Kick" button (RB on the X360) over and over in a rhythmic manner. You'll want to push the button any time your foot is stretched out forward. If you don't do it at the right time you'll lose speed.

Use the Aggro Kick to go through the 16 blue checkpoints in the time allotted.

The next task is to use the Aggro Kick to gain speed and then jump off a Kicker Ramp. You need to jump far enough to clear the finish line. The ramp is in front of you from where you start, however, you don't have enough room to gain speed. Turn around, skate back a ways, and then gain a bunch of speed (using the Aggro Kick of course) and hit the ramp. Jump at the top of the ramp and you'll clear it with no problem.

Repeat for the next Kicker Ramp.

Finally, you'll have to clear that roof gap that you started this objective with. In the middle of the jump you'll have to perform a Kickflip; press and hold Left on the Left Control Stick or D-Pad and then tap the "Flip" button ("X" on X360). You should have no problem with speed as you start out on a ramp. Still, throw in one or two Aggro Kicks for good measure.

You'll earn Money and an Octoskull Tattoo. You'll unlock the Aggro Kick.

Career - Arto's Video Episode

Impress Demo Skaters

Take to Arto (glowing green). The Bay Bridge-Tunnel will become Unlocked. Follow the arrow to Downtown Baltimore where you'll find Arto again.

Grind Around the Fountain - Use the QP and some Aggro Kicks to get some speed and then Grind around the fountain starting at the green marker. This will impress one Skater. To get SICK you'll have to grind five loops on the outer edge and then hop to the inner edge and grind five more loops. Nothing tricky about it, you'll just have to keep your balance and your speed going (Jump and Grind to gain speed).

Manual Down the Ramp - Use the QPs around you to get some speed up and then Manual down the ramp. Get past the first skater to impress him.

You'll need to make an entire loop all the way back to where you started for SICK. To help you with this you'll want to have unlocked "Aggro Pushing," which you'll learn later. Essentially this is a wall push while in a Manual. You can use this to keep up your speed. The game also tells you that you can Spacewalk for speed (Left then Right + Flip button), but Aggro Pushing is much better.

Collect one of the Demo objects - To impress one Skater all you have to do is collect the Screws. To do this Grind the rail in front of you and as you fall from the end of the rail, do a Manual (Up then Down or Down then Up). You'll land in a Manual. Steer over to the next rail where you'll find the Screws. Let this rail take you around (you'll automatically grab the screws), Manual, and then Grind the next rail. You need to get back to the group of guys on the wooden platform where you started to complete the task...just picking up the screws isn't enough.

To get SICK is nearly impossible and quite a task. From the start jump and Manual across the street, veering right a tad. Make it to the stairwell where you can grind up the rails, thus putting you on the path to the nails (look like screws). Just as you touch the nails, jump off the balcony and land in a Manual on the street below. Jump or Grind up the stairs and the next set of stairs, making your way (in a Manual) to the glass doors. Go through them and you'll magically be on top of the building where you can ride through the Sandpaper. Jump all the way down to the street, land in a Manual, grind the rail with the Screws and return to the platform. Easy, right?

Impressing one skater in each of these three tasks to earn AM. If you want PRO, you'll have to impress six skaters. If you want SICK, you'll have to impress all nine. I recommend that you wait until you stats are better before attempting SICK as it makes it a lot easier.

You'll earn Money.

Zumiez B'More Demo

Perform at least four of the six tricks
There are six different tricks which you are tasked with doing. You'll need to complete at least four for AM ranking...it doesn't matter which ones. They can be done in any order.

Flip the Fountain - To flip, while in the air, hold the "Flips" button ("LT" on X360, look in Pause >> Trick Controls >> Other Abilities >> Flips) while pushing the Left Stick either forward or back (frontflip or backflip). You'll have to do it along the length of the fountain, not the width of it. From where you start, turn around and use the QP for some speed. Hit the fountain directly so that when you jump you'll get a boost from the fountain's water jets. Land it.

Grind the Art - The art in question is the twisted metal above the area where you start. To get up there use the QPs opposite each other to get some speed and air. When you are high enough, Transfer (hold the "Revert" button) to the roof bowl above...it doesn't matter which side you do this one. Turn around and you'll see the twisted metal sculpture. Jump to it and grind it.

NTT (Nail-The-Trick) Theatre Roof - To get up to the Theatre Roof just skate through the doors. Jump off the roof and click down on both of your Control Sticks to enter Nail-The-Trick mode. It doesn't matter what trick(s) you do, just land it and you'll get credit for this trick.

Grind the Handrail - The handrail that you want to grind is the one on the walkway leading up to the upper area where the crowd is. This is very easy. Just Grind it.

Score 1,500,000 - This is actually quite difficult. I do recommend that you use the same bowl and the same methods as for the 50,000 point combo. I would recommend waiting until your stats are higher and you learn a few more tricks. Grind also is a good way to get a big score.

50,000 Combo - A great place to get the combo is in either bowl to the left or right of the art work that you have to grind. You'll want to use this like a normal bowl, going back and forth between the QPs, getting air and doing tricks. However, to string them together into a big combo you'll have to Revert and Manual between each QP, thus creating one long trick. If you can work some flips into your tricks (see Flip the Fountain above) you'll get crazy scores. It's best to start off getting a ton of air then start you sequence of tricks.

Nail a massive trick over the Fountain
Skate forward using a few Aggro Kicks to get going. Jump and enter Nail-The-Trick. Do a variety of board flips to get your multiplier up. Land a 15,000 trick for AM ranking (40,000 for PRO, and 100,000 for SICK).

You may want to wait until you have both Nail-The-Trick and Nail-The-Grab at your disposal before going for SICK.

Do big air tricks in front of the crowd to keep them stoked!
The crowd is split up so you have to get a flow going. The arrows will tell you which QP to hit. You will also be shown a score that you have to beat on each QP. Stoke the crowd 10 times for AM, 15 for PRO, and 25 for SICK.

You'll need to score AM in all objectives for AM and so on.

After completing this objective you'll earn Money, the $ Buckle, and a Skate Lounge Piece: Demo Pieces.
