Introduction

Welcome to Lunabean's The Legend of Zelda: Phantom Hourglass Walkthrough and Strategy Guide for the Nintendo DS. This is an extremely detailed guide with instructions on how to play as you read through it. Look for the highlighted boxes for specific help. Otherwise, if you're having trouble with a particularly move or item, look for the first time you encounter that move or item in the guide, and there you will find an explanation. Please enjoy!

Mercay - Path to the Temple of Fire

The Island

Tap the screen to get started. Answer the many questions accordingly, name your character, select the file, choose "Adventure" mode, and enjoy the introductory "Zelda" story. After a bit you'll have to forward the story tapping the blue arrow on the bottom screen. Eventually you'll get control of Link, who has recently met the kind Fairy Ceila. Ceila suggests speaking to Grandpa, whose house is to the north. Point your stylus to the top of the screen and Link will walk north. Guide him across the bridge, right a bit, then up the ramp to Grandpa's house. Enter.

Move forward and tap the old man to speak to him. He'll introduce himself as Oshus. Oshus will suggest that you make your way to the Port, which is in the SE corner of your map. Exit and follow the path the the right, where you'll soon run into a broken bridge. Speak to the woman there, then return to Oshus. Oshus will mention a path to the north.

Exit out and head west. Continue until you run into a man and his chicken. Tap the man to speak to him and he'll ask that you pick up the rocks in his garden. To do this, simply tap the rock to pick it up, then tap in the direction you want to toss it. Once this is done, speak to the man again for a reward of...1 Rupee?!?!? Hmm. Thankfully, Cheapskate McGee will also offer you a "hot tip", of a tree in the NE section of the map that you must bash really hard. Nice.

Mark your Map - You've received a hot tip, so mark it on your map! Select "Menu" on the bottom left corner of your screen, then select "Map". Once there, select "Memo" and use your stylus to mark the highlighted portion of the screen (use "Erase" to fix any mistakes). When the map is marked, hit the arrow to return to the game and move the marked map to the top of the screen.

Make your way north and you'll reach some Monsters. Since you are without a weapon you will be rejected and tossed back into the previous screen. Return to Oshus's home and speak to him again. Exit back out and Ceila will mention a sword. Note the barrels to your right. Move past them and you'll find even more barrels blocking a cave. Pick up the barrels and enter the cave.

Move north, to the door at the top of the screen. Here Ceila will tell you the secret to opening the door: Highlight the wooden sign to the right of it and write on it the number of palm trees found on the beach. Exit the cave and make your way to the beach, which is in the SW section of the map (where you began the game). Count the palm trees (there are seven), then return to the cave, tap the wooden sign, and use your stylus to write "7" on it. Move through the fallen door and tap the treasure chest. Inside you will find Oshus's Sword.

Collect from the various pots and exit the cave to meet Oshus. Speak to Oshus inside his house to be taught how to use your new weapon. He will present you with four targets to break via the Targeted Attack, four targets to break via the Side Slash, and four targets to break via the Spin Attack. Follow his instructions to perform these attacks accordingly.

Swordplay - There are three ways to use your sword in this game, and they all involve the use of your stylus.

Targeted Attack - To target and strike an enemy (or target), tap it with your stylus.

Side Slash - The side slash is useful if your enemies are too high in number, or move too fast, for you to tap. To use it, draw a line that separates you from your enemy. Repeat to use multiple slashes.

Spin Attack - Draw a large circle around Link. If you have trouble performing this attack and find yourself using the Side Slash instead, draw an even bigger circle around Link.

With your sword in hand, you are now ready to face the Monsters to the north! Leave Oshus's and head up that north path (head west first, then north). Use your sword on the Red Blobs and continue north to the Eye Stone. Hit it for a tip.

Eye Stones - Throughout the game you'll find many an Eye Stone. Hit them with your sword for gameplay tips and tricks. In dungeons, Eye Stones will tell you the placement of various treasure chests, if you pay them. The choice is up to you.

Somersault - To roll, decide which direction you want Link to move, place your stylus on the far edge of the screen in that direction, and draw tiny little circles. As Link makes his way to you he'll roll. If you are having troubles, practice in an open area where you have a lot of distance. Also, at the beginning, I found it easier to roll up and down instead of side to side. So, if you want to roll into the large tree to the right of the first Eye Stone and you're having trouble, roll from below.

Continue east until you reach a few trees blocking your path. Use your sword to knock them down, then enter the cave.

Mountain Passage

Move along the path, pick up and remove the rocks, and note the locked door. Move to the right of it, take out the Red Blobs that appear, then collect the Small Key from the treasure chest. Return to the locked door and tap it to use your key.

Head north and pop the Blobs. At the top of the room you'll find four levers. To the right of the levers is a sign that tells you to pull them in the right order...or else. Or else is never a good thing, so let's try for the right order, shall we?

Head west and you'll find a block that is blocking your path. Tap it to grab onto it, then tap the arrow in the direction you want it to move (the direction is up to you this time around). Repeat the tapping process until the block is out of your way and enter that room to the west. Eliminate the bats and read the sign. It tells you that the first lever to pull is the one that is second from the left. If you want to note this on your map, do so.

Exit the side room and return to the central room. Move the block to the east. Pop the bats here and read the sign. It tells you that the second lever you must pull is the first one on the left, and the last lever you must pull is the second from the right. This means that the third lever you must pull is the lever farthest to the right. So, you know the order. Return to the levers and pull them in this order: First, pull the second lever from the left. Second, pull the first lever from the left. Third, pull the lever farthest right. Fourth, pull the third lever from the left. Collect your reward, the Small Key, and use it on the north door.

Slash the Rats as you make your way north. Note the locked door and continue west. Continue fighting Rats and listen for a little clinking. It comes from the Rat who is holding the key hostage. To catch the Rat, take out all of his friends first, then use the nearby block to cover the hole closest to it. When this is done, move to the right side of the room, toward the locked door. When you hear the Rat, give him a couple of seconds to run for the blocked hole, then move to the open hole. The Rat will return to the open hole, where you'll be waiting for him. Slash the vermin for the Small Key. Use it on the locked door.

Fight the Bats as you follow the path to the exit. Upon exiting you'll find yourself on the east side of the broken bridge. Nice job. Head to the port, which is in the SE corner of your map. Speak to the man here. He tells you to speak to the bar owner about the whereabouts of the ship's owner, Linebeck. So, find the bar (the largest hut on the map) and speak to the bartender inside. The bartender will inform you that Linebeck went to the Temple of the Ocean King, which is the large ominous looking building on the north side of the island.

Exit the bar and follow the map to the north, then to the west. Fight the Red Blobs and move up the stairs to the north. Check you map to note the location of the tree you marked earlier. Roll into it to release a Big Green Rupee worth 100 Rupees. Nice.

Head west, then up the stairs to the Temple. Enter.

Temple of the Ocean King

Move through the north door and you'll encounter Linebeck. Linebeck is trapped behind some spikes. Offer your help and walk north. At this point you'll be told about the greatest danger of the Temple of the Ocean King, which is that it drains the life out of you any time you aren't on a safe purple patch. Check your map for the purple patches.

Your goal is to reach the middle one on the left side. Take the long route there and begin by running to the purple patch to the right. Once there, break the vases and hope for a heart to heal yourself of the draining, then run to the patch to the north. Check the treasure chest here for...nothing. Grr. Finally, head left to the purple patch with the ball switch and locked door. Strike it with your sword to drop the spikes and free Linebeck, then go speak to him. Linebeck will present you with a Small Key. Use it on the aforementioned locked door.

Once through the door, head left and up to the purple patch in the upper left corner. Hit the switch, then quickly make your way to the patch in the upper right corner (avoiding spikes and pits as you go, of course). When both switches are active, the door at the top of the room will open (if it's not, you didn't hit the second switch fast enough, so try again). Move through that open door and collect the Sea Chart from the treasure chest. Exit the Temple and speak with Linebeck.

Next, return to the port, where you will find both Linebeck and Oshus. Oshus will present you with the Sea Chart. Use your stylus on the island in the bottom right corner of your screen to reveal the Isle of Ember. Linebeck will ask if you're ready to set sail. Say "Ready" (unless, of course, you aren't ready and want to purchase a Wooden Shield or something at the town store just west of the port, which is something I did).

Once asea, draw a line on the Sea Chart from your location to the Isle of Ember below. Take whatever route you want, just be sure to end it at the anchor symbol next to the island, as this is the port. Also, feel free to stop at Beedle's Shop (the face icon), although there isn't much to note there at this time.

As you're sailing, use your stylus on the screen to look around, then line the ship up so it's sailing straight ahead. This way you'll be able to spot obstacles when you come to them. When you do spot an obstacle, tap the arrow at the bottom of the screen to jump over it. Also, if you're sailing and want to change course, hit the "Route" button again. If you just want to stop, hit "Stop".

The Isle of Ember

You must find Astrid. To do so, head east, past the mailbox, then up the stairs to the hut with the blue suns on it. Make your way downstairs and fight off the many Red Blobs. When this is complete, approach the green door at the top of the room, behind which you'll hear footsteps. Ceila will suggest you call out to the person behind it. To do so, get close to the door and say something into the mic on your DS. "Hello" works. If you have trouble with this, whistle, as it seems to really get the DS's attention.

Behind the door is Astrid. Agree to open the door for her, at which point you'll be directed to the map to the right of the door. Examine it and you'll be told to mark the locations of the island's three torches. You'll also be told to find Kayo, Astrid's assistant. No problem.

Exit Astrid's and head for the hut just south of it. Enter and note Torch #1. Mark it on your map. Next, read from the open book by tapping it. It's Kayo's and he tells you to head east. Exit and do just that. Head to the easternmost part of the island, fighting the few monsters you encounter as you go. Once there, examine the bones to speak to Kayo. Kayo will point out Torch #2. Mark it on your map. One more torch to go!

Look at your map and note the small island to the NW. Make your way there by heading north from your current position, then west. As you go, you'll run into a Buzz Blob, or two. To defeat them, wait for them to de-electrify, then hit them with your sword. As you approach the small island you'll spot Torch #3. Mark it on your map and return to Astrid's.

Once you reach Astrid's return to the map in the basement and touch it in the spots you have marked on your map. This will lower the door and reveal Astrid. Speak with her, and let her read your fortune. Astrid will tell you to go to the Temple of Fire.

Exit Astrid's head south, and cross the bridge to the east. Before crossing the second bridge to the east, head north and note the door. Tap it to open it. Head left to the stairs. Climb them and molten rocks will begin to spew out of the volcano. Avoid them as you move counterclockwise around the outer lip of the volcano. Eventually you'll run into the entrance to the Temple of Fire. To enter, blow out the candles by standing next to each one and blowing into the DS Mic.

Temple of Fire

1F

Weave your way through the flames to the central room with the large fire spinner. Follow it clockwise to the open path to the east. Follow that path to the end, then jump the gap to the platform in front of the locked door. Jump the next gap, then make your way to the room to the south. Slash the Bats to lower the flames and open the treasure chest for a Small Key. Head back to the aforementioned locked door. However, before jumping to the platform in front of it, examine the nearby map. This map will show you a path through the room to the north. Draw it on your map.

Move through the locked door and use your drawn path to guide you to the four switches at the end. Stand in the middle of them and perform a Spin Attack to hit them all at once. This will lower the door in the room with the large fire spinner, revealing a staircase. Backtrack there and move up those stairs to 2F.

2F

Move to the NW corner of the room and slash the switch. This will drop the red bars and raise the blue ones, allowing you to reach the room to the south. Do so. Here you'll meet some Green Globs. Fight them as you'd fight anything else (rub your stylus to shake them off if they glom onto you), then collect the Boomerang from the revealed treasure chest.

Boomerang: Select your Boomerang as you would any item, by tapping the Item Icon in the corner of your screen (you can also hold the "L" or "R" buttons to quickly select the item). Once the Boomerang is highlighted, draw a line from you to the Boomerang's destination. As soon as you lift your stylus the boomerang will fly.

Use your boomerang on the switch to the right of your entrance to this room. This will lower the flames to the west. Move along the new path to the room with two torches. Avoid the fireballs the torches spew out and use your boomerang to hit the two switches on the west side of the room (if you have trouble, focus on one switch at a time instead of trying to hit both with one toss). Once you succeed, move down the stairs to return to 1F.

1F

Head to the Eye Stone (pay it if you want for treasure chest locations, although it's not necessary), and face west. Toss your boomerang over the red bars then down to the switch below. This will raise the red and lower the blue, allowing you to reach the room to the south. Head there, then look left for the next switch. Hit it with your boomerang to lower the flames to your east, which gives you easy access to the central room with the large fire spinner.

Move south and you'll run into two Skull Monsters. To eliminate them, hit them with your boomerang to stop their poisonous gasses, then slash them with your sword. Move up the stairs to 2F.

2F

Avoid the fire spinners as you make your way across the top of them to the east. Here you'll find a Fire Bat. Pop him with your boomerang, then pull the lever at the bottom of the room. Note the second lever to your left. Cross back to the west side of the room and pull it. This will open the door to the north. Move through it and you'll find another Rat with a key attached to his tail. To get him, stand by the fallen door and equip your boomerang. Go ahead and draw a line to either of the two holes. When the Rat shows his little Rat face, lift your stylus to toss the boomerang. Note, if you have trouble doing this, you may want to pre-emptively throw the boomerang at the hole from which you think the Rat will appear.

Grab the Small Key then move across those fire spinners back to the east side of the room. This time, continue east and hit the switch at the bottom of the room to lower the red bars at the top of the room. Take out the Red Blob, then stand next to the blue bars and you toss your boomerang at the same switch at the bottom of the room, thus lowering the blue bars. Use your key on the door and climb the stairs to 3F.

3F

Head to the south section of the room and you'll find a sign. Examine it to find the numbers 1-4. These numbers correspond to switches that are found in the room north of you. Mark these numbers on your map, then head to that north room (blow out the candles to enter). Draw a line from switch to switch so you hit them with one toss in the order you have marked on you map. Use your boomerang again to collect the Small Key at the top of the room. Use it on the locked door in the room below.

Move west, past the Boss Door, and enter the next room, where you'll encounter two Buzz Blobs, two Fire Bats, and a Fireball Torch. Focus on the Buzz Blobs first, wait for the Torch to spew a ball, move out of the ball's way, then quickly toss your boomerang at the Fire Bats. Note, if you have trouble handling your boomerang in a battle situation, try holding "L" or "R" to select it, as it makes the throwing process faster, once you get used to it.

When all enemies have been eliminated the north door will drop. Move through it. Take out the Skull Monsters, then move north. Step on the switch to ignite the the torch to your left. Select your boomerang and draw a line connecting the fiery torch to the other two, thus igniting all three.

Head south and note the gap to the east. Stand next to the gap and toss the boomerang across the gap to the switch above. This will cover the gap. Move east, then north. Open the treasure chest for the Boss Key. With the key in hand, backtrack to the Boss Door, then tap it to toss the Key at it. Climb the stairs to 4F.

4F

If you need health, smash the vases, then read the stone signs. One will bring forth a blue light. This will provide a shortcut for you to the Temple Entrance. There's really no need for it here, but, in later temples, it's convenient in case you want to stock up on some item before meeting a boss. Speaking of meeting a boss, climb the stairs to meet your first.

Boss Fight: Blaaz, Master of Fire

To battle Blaaz you must be fast with your boomerang. Again, if you no not feel fast tapping the Item Icon then drawing the line, hold "L" or "R" to select the item, then draw the line. It really is a time saver once you get used to it.

Blaaz will immediately break into three Blaaz beings. Use your boomerang to hit all three in one toss. This will force all three Blaazes into one spot where they will emit a nice glow. At this point you have a split second to toss your boomerang at the mass of them. If successful, Blaaz will appear in him normal form. Strike him with your sword over and over again. If you're not successful, you must try and try again.

Blaaz will begin moving around the room. Follow him and get a sword strike in as often as you can. If you have trouble following him, use the map to note his location. Eventually Blaaz will break into three again, forcing you to repeat the entire process (with the addition of molten rocks).

Eventually you'll land enough hits into the Master of Fire to take him out for good. You should be able to do it in two to three rounds. Although, if you continue to miss him, it could take more. As you're fighting, use the various vases in the room for health.

Defeating Blaaz will bring forth Leaf, the Spirit of Power. It will also bring forth a treasure chest with a Heart Container in it. YAY! Collect it, then step into the blue light behind the chest to be transported back outside.

Return to Astrid, who will explain that you must collect three Spirits: Power (done), Wisdom, and Courage. She also lets you know the clue to the whereabouts of the next Spirit can be found back in the Temple of the Ocean King on Mercay. Finally, Astrid presents you with the Power Gem. Hop on your boat and make your way back to the island.

Gems: Gems can be found in various spots (some hidden, some not so hidden) throughout the game. There are three kinds of Gems to be found: Power, Courage, and Wisdom. Once you collect 10 of any one kind, make your way to Spirit Island, which is an uncharted island south of Molida. Enter the cave, move through the tunnel, and give up your Gems to increase various powers.

Power Gems will make your sword burn with flames. Courage Gems will make your sword send shockwaves. Wisdom Gems will increase your shield's defense. You can only use one of these powers at any given time. To select which powers you want to use, highlight the fairy in charge of them on your Collection Screen.
