2008 NIMF Video Game Report Card

The 2008 NIMF Video Game Report Card is out and it looks like the only group who failed are parents!

If you're not too into reading long documents and multiple web pages (and who is...it's Thanksgiving week, after all), the summary is a good place to look.

The often maligned ESRB gets double "A"s; one for adding game summaries to their ratings and the other for parental education. Retailers get a "B+" with an 80% enforcement rate and console manufacturers get an "A" for things like parental controls and time limits.

Parents, on the other hand, have been issued an "Incomplete". That means that they either had a tragic event occur in their life where they had to go away to rehab or counseling for a while and will make up the class later...or...it means that the key to keeping violent games out of the hands of kids is parents...just like we've always said.

The report states, "Parents now have more information and tools than ever before. However, the constant changes present new challenges. Parents need to pay more attention to the amount of time and the types of games their kids play."

The NIMF's praise of the industry is quite a turnaround. Back in the 2004 Report Card they concluded, "We know that the industry wants to expand its customer base and that it is in their economic interest to hook babies on games."

Hooking babies on video games...that was so 2004.

I think it's fair to say that Goldeneye will remain on my top five favorite videogame list throughout the forseeable future. With that being said, Quantum of Solace is no Goldeneye, but it's a helluva lot of fun.

Violent Video Game Law Hits Appeals Court on Wed.

On Wednesday, the 9th Circuit Court of Appeals will review a 2007 ruling of a San Jose federal judge finding that the 2005 Anti-Violent-Videogame law, written by state Sen. Leland Yee (D - San Francisco), is unconstitutional.

There is little doubt that the Court of Appeals will uphold the ruling, as the law as it is written violates the first ammendment.

Which leads me to think that the timing of this is awfully convenient, what with an election a mere 10 days away. Yee and his fellow state Sens. can claim that they're fighting for families when all they're really doing is pretending to be concerned.

As Ali so eloquently has written:

The problem is, when the politicians write such laws and they make such noise, they are undermining the work of the ESRB, leaving parents confused. If the politicians are serious about this issue, they need to back up the ESRB and their rating system instead of fighting them at every turn. And, until the politicians do back up the ESRB, I can only assume they are looking our for themselves, and not our kids.

"Far Cry 2" Review - Not for the Weak of Heart

Far Cry 2, the new open-world first-person-shooter from Ubisoft, asks a lot of you. It's definitely not a dumbed-down game and it surely is not for beginners. It's spartan features and rigid gameplay elements make it sort of the masochist's Mercenaries 2.

The game begins with a long opening movie of you, a mercenary for hire, riding into a civil war-torn town somewhere in Africa. Out of the civil war two main factions have emerged: the Unified Front for Liberation and Labor (UFFL) and the Alliance for Popular Resistance (APR).

Because this brought up memories of the all-to-real events in Sierra Leone over a decade ago, events so hauntingly recounted in Ismael Beah's "Long Way Gone," I had to come up with my own names for them, so I got in the habit of calling them: the United Federation of Lame-o Losers and the Association of Postal Retirees. There, that feels better.

Fary Cry 2's main story arc is based upon you finding and eliminating Jackal, an arms dealer who supplies weapons for both sides of the war. This devil of a man is responsible for every bullet and every death in this war ravaged region, essentially giving you that warm fuzzy feeling for meting out justice with, well, bullets and death.
