Ravi Purushotma, a student who is currently enrolled in the Comparative Media Studies masters program at MIT, has written a terrific commentary concerning entertainment-focused media forms, and how educators need to learn to embrace them instead of looking at them as something "adversarial to educational content". Purushotma begins by explaining the frustration and boredom he once felt while filling out his German workbook in high school, then compares it to what his German experience would have been, had he learned German by playing The Sims. By switching one registry setting, Purushotma was able to play The Sims in German, and found the language to be quite similar to the language in his introductory German textbook. This is a wonderful article which goes beyond The Sims and needs to be read by anyone who is interested in turning the attitude toward the video gaming industry into a positive one.
