Seriously, Advent Rising is a poor game and I'm extremely dissapointed. Leading up to its release I had been hyping it based on early reviews, screenshots, and videos. I was ready to let myself go, suspend my disbelief, and be carried away by a new sci-fi mythology. Instead, I got glitchy gameplay, choppy character movement, and one of the most unoriginal games of all time.
When I made the Halo comparison, I wasn't kidding. This game plays like the functionally retarded little brother (no offense to the mentally disabled) of Halo, the only difference being you're playing in the third person. Dual-wielded weapons that you can pick-up/drop any time you're over another weapon? Check. Enemies that look almost identical to Covenant aliens? Check. A narrative where those aliens have come to wipe out humanity? Check. Run forward and shoot? Check.
As you may have guessed by now, I am not a fan of this game. How "Gamepro" gave it an "Editors Choice" award is beyond me. My only guess is that Majesco paid them off or all of the normal editors were on vacation leaving only the interns around.
It's too bad, really. Halo and Halo 2 are great games that are deserving of rip-offs. Imitation is the sincerest form of flattery, afterall. Unfortunately, this isn't an imitation but rather, an abomination (has Johnny Cochran's ghost possessed me?).
I guess I'm so disappointed because I had such high hopes. Well, at least the contest sounds cool.
MAJESCO ENTERTAINMENT KICKS-OFF MILLION DOLLAR PROMOTION WITH XBOX LIVE FOR AWARD-WINNING 'ADVENT RISING' VIDEO GAME
'Race to Save Humanity' Million Dollar Play-and-Win Contest Begins Tomorrow
EDISON, N.J., June 8, 2005 – Gamers now have one million more reasons to play the sci-fi action video game, Advent Rising, as Majesco Entertainment Company (NASDAQ: COOL ), an innovative provider of digital entertainment products and content , launches its "Race to Save Humanity" million dollar play-and-win contest tomorrow at 8pm EST/5pm PST exclusively on XboxTM Live.
Made possible through Xbox TMLive, the contest offers eligible consumers who find hidden 'A' icons within the game, the ability to win hundreds of weekly prizes and one grand prize of $1,000,000. The contest applies to the first 500,000 Xbox copies of Advent Rising and consumers shouldn't wait as many retail outlets are sold out of the game.
Leading video game consumer magazine, GamePro, gave Advent Rising a 4.5 out of 5, earning the magazine's coveted "Editor's Choice" award. GamePro said, "This game makes you believe all the lip-service rhetoric about video games maturing into a genuine art form, because it puts its effort where its mouth is."
"Initial consumer response and buzz surrounding Advent Rising has been impressive and we expect it to continue as we roll out our extensive marketing and promotional campaigns," said Ken Gold, vice president of Marketing for Majesco. "We are excited to team with Microsoft on such an innovative promotion in which we watch gamers compete to become a millionaire and win tons of other great prizes via Xbox Live."
$1,000,000 – And How to Get It
The contest commences tomorrow and is limited to the first 500,000 copies of the game sold. Consumers who purchase specially marked packages of Advent Rising will receive a free, two-month subscription to Xbox Live to participate in the contest, or they may use their existing account. Then, once a week for six weeks, an "Easter egg" in the form of the letter 'A' will be downloaded via Xbox Live and hidden within a level of the game. Majesco will publish clues on the contest website and distribute to the media as to which level the icon resides in and then the race is on.
Once the egg is found, consumers will be given a code and prompted to log into the contest website using their Xbox Live Gamer Tag. The first person to do so is that week's winner. The contest is open only to US and Canadian residents (void in MD, VT and in Quebec) who are 13 years or older. The contest ends August 15, 2005. Complete contest rules can be found online at www.adventtrilogy.com/contest.
