As reported last April, Ubisoft was awarded the future development of the America's Army brand. Well, almost a year later, Ubisoft has announced America's Army: Rise of a Soldier (PS2, Xbox, Summer '05). According to the press release, "Ubisoft is creating the most authentic military console game to date by incorporating true-to-life character progression via an all-new Career mode and gameplay." It sounds like some RPG elements will make their way into this game. I'm on the fence with the America's Army series. Begun as a recruiting tool for the US Army, I don't see the merit of the US Army working with video game makers to create an ultra-realistic game for the PS2 and Xbox other than, of course, portraying the Army as "cool" to would-be soldiers. If they want ultra-realistic I'd recommend watching last night's Frontline Episode: A Company of Soldiers. Putting all the baggage aside it should be a fun game, just remember its roots.
