Microsoft recently announced
that a Lexington, SC, software company, Interactive Data Visualization, will be amongst the first to produce software for the Xbox2. "SpeedTree software is the first ? and currently the only ? program approved specifically for creating photorealistic forest worlds for the next Xbox?s games, said Microsoft executive Tracey Frankcom." Gamesradar is reporting that SpeedTree will be inserted directly into the Unreal Engine 3 and will be used by developers using Epic Game's toolsets. This frees up developers to worry more about games and less about environment. As great as the trees look in the screenshots, they still have an angular cut to them rather than being more organic. Still, I can't wait for the first forest moon of Endor to be created using this software!
