When Sony tells us
the PS3 is going to have 35 times the power of the PS2, we become both excited and fearful. We're excited for obvious reasons. We're fearful for the potential price tag of this puppy. There has already been speculation that the console could sell for $699 to $799, which, quite honestly, makes my stomach drop to my knees. However, we do have a bit of hope that the console will sell for under $500, as Japan's
Mainichi Daily News has
published and article citing Sony officials who put the price of the console at "less than 50,000 yen". Fifty thousand yen translates to US$467, which may just allow the console to sell for under $500 in the US, despite the inevitable bump in price which occurs between the shelves of Japan and the shelves of the US.
