The Inquirer UK
has this article revealing that the Blu Ray DVD drive at the core of the PS3 will cost Sony $100 or more per unit. Ken Kutaragi, Playstation Pres.,
has hinted at an expensive console and this would be one of the major reasons why. In contrast, the Xbox 360 will contain a normal DVD RW+ drive at launch. MS has hinted that, in the future, they may transition to HD DVD. Blu Ray technology uses a thinner blue laser to store more info, 25 GB per side, on a DVD. Normal DVDs can hold about 4.5 GB. Personally, I'd prefer the cheaper drive and if there is a game that is bigger than 4.5 GB, give me several game discs. I don't care if I have to switch discs.
