So what the hay does that mean? My guess, based purely upon my own Xbox 360 fantasies, will be the announcement of Xbox 360 "hubs", if you will. Basically, retail stores, similar to an Apple Store, where not only will you be able to buy Xbox 360 peripherals and mods, but will be Meccas for LAN parties and the like. I could see Wi-Fi enabled stores, perhaps with a Starbucks inside, where people of all persuasions could stop in and play a few rounds of Halo 3 multiplayer against friends or strangers.
These stores would be hubs for all technologies, and would welcome iPods and PSPs alike (which the Xbox 360 will recognize). At these stores you'd have expert gamers who could teach you tricks and set up tournaments.
Microsoft has been trying to figure out how to get into the retail environment...afterall, they really don't have hardware as much as they have software. The Xbox changed that and the Xbox 360 will continue this evolution of MS. This would be a great way to get their foot in the door of proprietary retail stores.
Add to this the report from Gamespot about an Xbox 360 "lounge" being contructed in a high-end, trendy part of Tokyo, Japan.
Furthering the complete speculation, much has been made regarding the apples on the tree at OrigenXbox360.com. Of course, there are two obvious allusions; one to the tree of knowledge, the other to Apple Computers itself. What if the announcement were a combined MS/Apple store? Huh, huh?
Finally, remembr the theme of OurColony.net and ILoveBees.com? Basically, axons going hot and colonies of insects. These "communities", as it were, were supposed to bring to mind the social gaming aspect of Xbox 360 (and, well, Halo 2). Now imagine if the announcement tomorrow were a world-wide launch of say, fifteen Xbox 360 stores in the world's major cities where gamers from Seattle could as easily play against gamers from San Francisco as gamers from Moscow or Madrid. Pretty cool, huh?
Again, this is just my mind wandering and has no real basis in reality, other than the reality I have created in my head, which does seem to have an inordinate amount of monkeys and jam, so factor that in.
We'll just have to wait and see what happens tomorrow. Godspeed Xbox 360. Godspeed.
