As we reported in January, Utah State Rep., David Hogue, drafted a bill to group violent video games with pornography and explicit nudity laws already on the books. As the Salt Lake Tribune reported, the bill passed the Utah House 56-8. Rep. Hogue conjured the 9/11 of the video game world when he said regarding the Columbine school shooting, "Would these same kids have done this anyway without watching violent videos? Maybe not." The bill contains a stipulation that parents can go to jail for up to two weeks for purchasing a violent game for their kid. Constitutional issues remain and it is likely that, if the bill passes, it will be struck down as have other video game bills in CA and IL. We'll keep you updated.
