Microsoft's long-rumored HD DVD add-on is now a reality
. The format is the rival to Sony's Blu-ray technology and is the first shot fired in the new format war (think Beta vs. VHS). The add-on will plug into the Xbox 360 via a USB cable. The article is quick to point out that resolution of HD DVDs is 6 times that of current DVDs. Microsoft's "ace in the hole" at this point is that HD DVD has a much lower cost, from manufacturing to players, than does Blu-ray. Of course, over time, the price will even out. Since we still have a 27" Philips TV from 1999, there's no rush for us to buy this accessory ;).
