In a nice PR move, Nintendo President, Satoru Iwata, is offering a three part interview with some of his own developers and engineers regarding why the Wii is the Wii. The original interview was posted on the Nintendo Japan site. Thankfully, a translation is now available on the European site
here.
The interview offers some insight into why Nintendo chose to go for innovation rather than pure graphical power. The reason, as we all know now, is that the average gamer doesn't stand to gain much from a faster frame rate or more polygons. The average gamer wants to be able to pick up a one handed controller and play a game, dammit! The brilliance, of course, is that us hard core gamers also want that.
The interview also delves into how Nintendo shouldn't be seen as using old technology, but rather, as the title of the first interview suggests, "Using state-of-the-art technology in unprecedented ways."
