DS keeps game industry afloat

Nintendo today is touting a new NPD Group study which concludes that due to the handheld market, the video game industry grew 11% through September (year over year), despite being at the end of a console cycle.


Historically, the end of a console cycle (usually every five years) sees the worst sales in games as gamers hold off on buying until the new systems and games are out. NPD claims that without strong sales of the Nintendo DS and its games, sales would have been flat.

Nintendo, taking the ball and running with it, used this report to highlight their success in reaching out to the masses through its Touch Generations software like, 'Brain Age,' and their success in bringing the DS to market.

They also are using this news to highlight the fact that the Wii will be launching in one month; its goal being to appeal to the masses, as well.

Hey, I'm not a Nintendo fan-boy, but seriously, the DS is selling like hot cakes and Nintendo did figure something out with its 'Brain Age' and 'Nintendogs' games. More women and older people equal better sales.
