I'm not a fan of video game analysts as they are usually wrong. However, in this case, it seems that Sebastian has it right. The first indication of this is the phone call I got from Babbages last night saying that I didn't make the cut, even though I was 6th in line for the preorder. They took twelve pre-orders...that was the conservative estimate for how many they'd receive. Now, they're getting five 60GB and two 20GB models. That's about half in my book. Also, there is a report that the second shipment of PS3s for Japan will come in at 30,000 instead of 100,000.
What's that sound I hear? Oh, Sony going bankrupt.

lol, well, much like what happened with halo 2, impatient sony fans kept complaining about how it was taking them years to make the ps3, so when they got pressured into releasing it, it wasn't up to people's expectations. Maybe if gamers grew some patience, we wouldn't have problems like unfinished games and a rediculously low number of ps3s in this country. Keep in mind that japan only got around 100k.

What you guys don't understand is that releasing a very low number of units is done purposely. This is what creates the hype, and people fight to get thier hands on "the newest thing.." After Christmas you'll see a whole new stock "MAGICALLY" appear in all the stores, and similar to the sales everywhere for PS2's right now, you'll see all the flyers adverising PS3's. By next Christmas, the prices for this unit will be slashed in half, same as when the PS2 came out. It's simple marketing, and will stand the test of time, it's been done forever. Good-Luck to those trying to get one by Christmas !! :-)

I think people understand that short supply causes demand and media attention. However, I don't think that's what is going on here. Even if Sony only released 1/2 million consoles they'd still get the hype. Not to mention the fact the Sony is in the hole financially with all of the battery recalls. No, Sony would love to be making money right now. They'd release more if they had them.

sony loses at estimate over $200 per ps3 sold... this isn't uncommon... most gaming units get sold at a loss to drive software sales... (when first introduced until they streamline the manufacture process) so no, sony is not going to make any difference in their pocketbooks by shipping more ps3's... it is very much marketing... they're really in no hurry, we're all gonna be buying one in the end
