Last Friday, rumors were running around the internet like a wind up chicken struck with the spirit of Jesus regarding an impending "World Exclusive" in the next issue of Official Nintendo Magazine UK (ONM).
The front cover shows a collection of stars and says, "World Exclusive! Step back in time as a classic game makes a long overdue return." Some resourceful internetters figured out that if you trace the stars, you get the outline of the NiGHTS logo. (See the cover and outline)
More NiGHTS rumor and information
This revelation got gamers very excited. Now, I have to admit that I never owned a Sega Saturn, so I never got to play the apparent awesomeness that is NiGHTS. And, hey, cut me some slack. In 1996 I was a junior in college and had more important things on my mind, like not flunking out. Nonetheless, judging from the overwhelming outpouring of love for this game, it definitely peaked my interest.
So, I headed over to wikipedia for a little research. It seems that NiGHTS's or NiGHTS into Dreams's, "story follows two children entering a dream world in order to prevent the real world being taken over. They are aided by the eponymous being NiGHTS, an androgynous flying acrobat."
Tingle anyone?
Digging a little farther, I discovered that NiGHTS is broken up into seven levels, each containing four sub-levels (Mares) and a Boss Fight. Okay. Nice and simple...a structure we're all familiar with.
Another interesting tidbit is that the game was developed by Sega's Sonic Team.
The game debuted around the same time as Super Mario 64 and Crash Bandicoot. It was lost in the fray, despite decent critical ratings, and never sold extremely well...Psychonauts, I'm looking in your direction!
Despite NiGHTS producer, Yuji Naka's reluctance to remake the game, he has, according to wikipedia, said that the Wii would be the perfect console if he ever were to do a remake.
And, here we stand. An officially confirmed rumor, that NiGHTS is coming to the Wii, not as a virtual console game, but as a full-fledged title.
If we get an official annoucement, we'll be sure to let you know.
