Video Game News from March 2008

With Super Smash Brothers Brawl less than a week away, the people at Gaming Today asks Nintendo to bring back its quirky commercials of the N64 generation.

Watching this Super Smash Brothers commercial of yore, I can't help but want to join the movement.

Lookin' good:

The game is expected to be released in September, just four months (give or take) after LEGO Indiana Jones, which means it will be a HUGE year for LucasArts and traveller's tales. Oh, it will also be a HUGE year for the millions of gamers (myself included), who love the LEGO games.

For more LEGO Batman info, check out the latest article from MTV Multiplayer, which broke the news that we'll be able to play as both Batman hero and Batman villian. Mwahahahahaha!

The PS2 port and highly anticipated Okami has been pushed back from its previously announced March 25th release date to April 15th.

Gamespot, the breakers of this news, provides no reason for the delay, beyond a guess that the game's developers (Ready at Dawn) wanted to reallocate its resources to God of War: Chains of Olympus. My only problem with that theory is that GoW: CoO hits stores today. Ready at Dawn's work is done, right? Perhaps the team just wanted a well-deserved break.

No matter what the reason, there's not much difference between March 25th and April 15th, particularly when we'll all have Super Smash Brothers Brawl to entertain us in the interim.

For those who haven't seen the Wii version in play, this little video is worth a look:

For those who love puzzle games, Zack and Wiki is the game for you.

In case you missed it during the '07 holiday blitz (as so many did), Nintendo and Capcom have made available a Flash demo of one of the early levels to give you a taste of the game's greatness. Have fun!

While I often entertain the thought of being a contestant on Iron Chef America, my lack of actual culinary skills, along with my fear that the revealed theme ingredient would be monkey brains, prevents me from going too far with this fantasy.

With that being said, I couldn't be more pleased that Destineer and Black Lantern Studios are developing a playable version of my favorite Food Network program for both the Wii and DS. From the comfort of my living room, I'll now be able to battle master chefs Mario Batali, Bobby Flay, Masaharu Morimoto, and Cat Cora.

The virtual kitchen stadium will offer 15 theme ingredients, allowing for "hundreds of dish variations", along with 300 minigames. Oh, and the best part? No clean up. BooYa!

The New York Times this weekend published a lovely obituary for Dungeons & Dragons creator Gary Gygax. Alongside the tribute to our fellow nerd came a fantastic flowchart showing us how the creation of D&D has contributed to geekdom in its many current forms.

More evidence that women are playing more and more "casual" games and that they are the ones who will actually pay for them.

In an interview with GameTrailers.com Nintendo of America president Reggie Fils-Aime informed the host that the second half of '08 is going to be "fantastic" and that there will be "great new content maximizing all of our key franchises."

What's more, the Nintendo head announced, "There's going to be a big game for the holidays that the gamers will want."

Now, of course the president and ex-VP of marketing is going to hype the future of Nintendo, but, I have to admit, this unnamed holiday '08 title really has me scratching my head.

It can't be Zelda, as we just had one holiday '06. No Mario, as that came out holiday '07. Metroid? No, it also just came out. Pikmin? Well, I'd love that, but I don't think "the gamers" would be horribly excited. A completely new franchise? I'd think we'd hear of it more that 6 months ahead of the release. Man, oh, man. What could this holiday '08 title be?

Unfortunately, none of us will know the answer to this burning question until E3 this July. And, truth be told, we all know anything that's announced by Nintendo in July and promised to be released for the "holidays", will, most likely, be delayed time and time again. It's just how Nintendo works. It's part of their hype machine. Too bad I'm a sucker for it each and every time.

I love this kind of stuff...behind-the-scenes history of games we all know and love. In addition to the quote below, I enjoyed the rant on hardware collision detection.

The reason that Super Pac-Man is the best arcade conversion that I ever did is that nobody really cared about it. I knew from the very first that it was a “loser” title, an oddball member of the Pac-Man pantheon that no one really understood, and the likelyhood of the cartridge actually shipping was pretty low.

It seems "Crackdown" isn't just the name of a popular Xbox 360 game but it's what MS is doing to people who have tampered with their gamesaves to earn a higher gamerscores and get more achievements.

It goes something like this...you see a post on a message board from somebody who is offering to play "Halo 3" for you so that your gamerscore goes up. All you have to do is send him your account info, so he can sign in as you, and paypal him $40.

Well, that's against Xbox Live's terms of use and can get you banned, your account canceled or, in the case of what happened today, can result in the deletion of all of your achievements, set your gamerscore back to ZERO, and make it obvious to other users that you're a cheater (as the graphic above shows).

So, what if you live in a dorm and there is one Xbox 360 where four of you sign in. Don't worry. It's not so much lots of accounts on the same 360 as it is your account on several 360s. Add into that the wizbang technology that MS uses to determine if you're earning stuff a little too quickly and/or tampering with saved game files to undermine the system and you're toast!

On the one hand, I'm of the philosophy, "so what?". It's none of MS's business what I do with my account. On the other hand, fair play makes games more fun.

With less than a month to the launch of what's sure to be this year's biggest game, the insert map for Grand Theft Auto 4 seems to have been leaked. While it's still getting the "rumor" treatment, for those of us living in Liberty City, well, it looks right to us.

You'll see that Lunabean HQ is located in a lovely part of town, on the east side, not far from the beach and in close proximity to Chuck E Cheese! However, the only dog park in the area, Tommy Vercetti Memorial Park, is all the way across town. Alas, don't feel bad. When you can drive 90 miles per hour and pedestrian deaths don't matter, it only takes about 5 minutes to get there.

GTA4 is released on April 29th and we'll start a walkthrough soon thereafter.

For more info on the leaked maps, head here.
