April 2009 Videogame Sales Numbers

April 2009 videogame sales numbers are in and it looks like a huge win for Nintendo.

The DS sold 1.04 million units (the numbers were not broken up into DS and DSi), blowing away all other hardware. The next closest is the Wii which sold 340,000.

The basic synopsis is this: Due to the fact that GTA IV and Mario Kart Wii (still #3 after a year of being available) were released in April of 2008 and nothing of merit was released in April of 2009, a year on year comparison is fairly useless.

The thing to take note of is that Nintendo continues to dominate with their blend of affordability and approachable games, particularly in this economy. Proof of consumers looking for bargains can be seen in the fact that the PS2 (now $99) outsold the PS3 and almost beat out the X360. That's just sad.

Here are the numbers:

Hardware
Nintendo DS - 1.04 million
Nintendo Wii - 340,000
Xbox 360 - 175,000
PlayStation 2 - 172,000
PlayStation 3 - 127,000
PlayStation Portable - 116,000

Software
Wii Fit (Nintendo) - 471,000
Pokemon Platinum Version (Nintendo, DS) - 433,000
Mario Kart Wii (Nintendo) - 210,000
Wii Play (Nintendo) - 170,000
The Godfather II (Electronic Arts, Xbox 360) - 155,000
Resident Evil 5 (Capcom, Xbox 360) - 122,000
New Super Mario Bros. (Nintendo, DS) - 119,000
Mario Kart DS (Nintendo) - 112,000
Guitar Hero: Aerosmith (Activision, Xbox 360) - 110,000
The Godfather II (Electronic Arts, PS3) - 91,000

Nintendo reports record profits

Recession? What recession? In the 2008 fiscal year that ended March 21, 2009, Nintendo has reported an 8.5% rise in its net annual profits, making just under 279.1 billion yen ($2.83 billion).

Sure, it's a far cry from the 47.7% rise the company posted the previous year, but, keep in mind, that previous year was chock full of Wii hysteria and DS envy, and was preceded by a console lull that happened as the Wii was being developed. In other words, it would have been shocking had Nintendo not had a huge 2007 fiscal year. The fact 2008 showed gains over 2007, particularly in this economy, is a big deal.

In fiscal '08, Nintendo moved 26 million Wii consoles and 31.2 million DSes. Add to those astonishing numbers the fact that the year saw 62 Wii and DS titles (both first and third party) reach one million copies sold life-to-date, and you've got some mighty impressive record profits in the middle of a craptacular economy. Nice work, Nintendo!

Nintendo DSi - April 5

Nintendo today announced that its DS replacement, the Nintendo DSi, will hit US retail shelves on April 5, aka, Palm Sunday. The price is $169.99.

Aside from its slim new look, the DSi features two cameras; one facing you and one facing out. "The cameras also present people with unprecedented ways to interact with their games while giving developers a new tool to devise creative games and experiences," says the press release.

The DSi also features a new sound application that acts as a voice recorder. I can imagine the Zelda game now that makes you record your voice early in the game only to need to play it back later to open a dungeon or defeat a boss. You'll be saying to yourself, "why didn't I think of that...grr!"

What's more, the DSi will feature its own software store, which much like WiiWare (the place to download software for the Wii), will allow developers of all stripes to make games for the innovative new handheld.

The DSi will be able to play "most" DS games, offering a built in library of 850 games from the get go.

Finally, launching with the DSi is Rhythm Heaven, a quirky short attention span game which challenges you to tap and swipe your way to music. It is a hit in Japan, already selling 1.6 million copies since July '08.

As of now, the only two colors being shown are a teal blue and the black pictured above. If any more info is released, we'll be sure to update you. Oh, I'm so excited and I don't even know why...I just love new handhelds!
