GTA DS coming this winter, GTAIV sells 10 million copies

Reporting earnings for its third fiscal quarter yesterday, GTA publisher Take-Two Interactive made two big announcements. First, the company announced sales for GTAIV have reached the 10 million mark. For those keeping track, that's an additional 1.5 million copies since the company's last report on May 31st.

The second Take-Two tidbit should be exciting for DS gamers, as it was also announced that GTA: Chinatown Wars, the first GTA title to hit the Nintendo handheld, will be released sometime in the first quarter of the company's 2009 fiscal year. For those who don't speak Take-Two fiscal, that means we'll see the game anywhere from November 1, 2008 to January 31, 2009.

If you're wondering if the DS title will be in stores for Holiday '08, there's no guarantee. However, I'd say that if they miss it, they'll miss the first quarter altogether and use it for a second quarter profit boost.

PS3 DVR DRM-free?

CVG recently got its hands on Europe's PlayTV digital recorder, and wrote an in-depth review of the PS3 peripheral. Amid the glowing response is this little nugget:

Or, brilliantly, you can export videos to your PS3's XMB menu as MPEG-4 video (despite rumours suggesting the feature had been removed). From there you can use it like a normal file - watch it on your PS3, put it on PC, transfer it to your PSP... whatever you like.

You can access PlayTV from your PSP via Remote Play, too, allowing you to watch live TV or stored videos through your portable.

Is it possible that Sony, the team that stealthily slipped its digital rights management software onto so many PCs to protect music copyright, is now allowing people to freely record and distribute video? Perhaps it would make more sense if Sony wasn't itself a major video distributor...

Crazy.

'Ghostbusters' gets slimed

As a child of the '80s, I've been looking forward to a decent Ghostbusters videogame for over two decades. This October, my dreams were supposed to come true. A game, complete with voice acting from the original cast, was to be delivered. We even got this fun new trailer from E3:

Great, right? Well, it ends up that things aren't so great. As of this past weekend, videogame retailer Gamestop has stopped offering pre-orders on the game, which is supposed to be less than two months away. What's worse, they're offering refunds to those who have already pre-ordered. Refunds? Gamestop? Dogs and cats, living together...MASS HYSTERIA!

We'll let you know when there is further news on this travesty.

Team ICO may show off next game soon

As mentioned yesterday, Guillermo del Toro has proclaimed both Ico and Shadow of the Colossus to be videogame "masterpieces". Today, the Pan's Labyrinth director should be quite pleased to learn the people who gave us the two games, known in the industry as "Team ICO", are preparing to show off its next creation "soon".

The news comes via Videogaming247.com:

“I cannot tell,” said the exec was asked specifically if the new Team ICO game will be shown at Tokyo Game Show this year.

“But I can say that they’ve been working very hard since the release of Shadow of the Colossus.

“Soon you’ll see.”

As Joystiq points out, the Tokyo Game Show (which takes place this year from October 9 - 12) is, "the last major opportunity this year to reveal the project".

And, with that being said, it would be disappointing to me if Sony didn't use the show and the time frame to show off the highly anticipated yet-to-be-revealed title for the PS3.

"Tiger Woods PGA Tour '09" Demo on Xbox Live

A demo for Tiger Woods PGA Tour 2009 is now available on Xbox LIve. I'm currently downloading the large 1008.70 MB file (85% complete) and I will post with my impressions after giving it a go for a few hours.

This is my first Tiger Woods since getting an HDTV...oh, boy, oh boy. I sure hope I don't hurt Tiger's knee too badly.

The download is also available on the PS3's PSN for download.

UPDATE

The first thing that sticks out with '09 is that skills/attributes are powered up not by purchasing them after each round, but dynamically, based upon how you play. And, in fact, if you play poorly, your skill level goes down. At any time not playing a round, you can choose "Custom Drills" which will help you earn skill points.

For example, the demo asks that you play three holes so that it can determine your skill level. Me, being awesome, got a birdie and two pars (I laid up on the par 4 because there was not enough of a landing area for a 3 wood). It rewarded me with improvement in my power, accuracy, short game, and putting. The game then suggested that I do a custom power drill in order to add 0.60 points to my power score. It's like a Tiger RPG. Coolio!

More golfing...

'Godfather II' due in Feb. to have RTS elements

EA's Godfather II is expanding upon the GTA-esque open world, mission-based gameplay by adding a Real Time Strategy (RTS) element to it.

Here is an explanation:

To help players manage their empire, The Godfather II introduces “The Don’s View” – an innovative strategy meta-game that allows players to oversee the entire world as they grow the family business. Using the Don’s View, players will be able to build, defend and expand their crime rings, while keeping an eye on the movements and plans of the rival families.

This sounds like a great addition, although I'm skeptical if it's one of those, "just because you can doesn't mean you should," sort of things.

The original Godfather game was quite fun, so hopefully this one will be as well. The game is due out in February of '09, but there is a, "premiere exclusively on GameTrailers TV with Geoff Keighley on Friday, August 15th on Spike TV."

Top 5 E3 2008 Announcements

It was fairly difficult coming up with a top five list of E3 2008 highlights and not because there was so much to choose from. In fact, it was the opposite. This year's E3 was terribly underwhelming with no big announcements from any of the major players.

That being said, we have managed to pull five noteworthy happenings out of the rotting compost pile that was E3 2008. Keep in mind, these are what we think are valuable and may not be what the "mainstream" values, that is, more FPSes with better graphics than before. Oy.

1. Pikmin coming to the Wii - Finally, the perfect platform for the perfect game. Serenity now!

2. Star Wars The Clone Wars: Lightsber Duels - When the Wii was announced, with its motion sensing controller, all I could think about were lightsabers and Harry Potter wands. The latter has proven quite satsifying. Soon, we'll see if the former is as awesome as in my daydreams.

3. Tecmo Bowl Kickoff for the DS - I have never hidden my love for Tecmo Bowl...here and here. This new version, for the DS, will have more customizable options, but the same gameplay those of us of a certain age both know and love.

4.

"Dogs and cats living together!" My love for Ghostbusters runs deep. Debuting in 1984, it hit as I was turning 8 years old and then, as VCRs started to gain popularity, it was a staple of my household. That being said, even if the game isn't that great, I will love it.

5. Resident Evil 5 Screenshots - Normally, I'm not a sucker for screenshots, however, due to my love of Resident Evil games, and the fact that we've been waiting for RE5 since 1978, seeing a whole new slew of pictures makes me happy.

So there they are. The five announcements from E3 2008 that we here at Lunabean find the most intriguing.

'Max Payne' Trailer is Craptastic!

Don't worry, craptastic is a good thing. It's a term I reserve for things like the "American Idol" Ford commercials, the new NBC show, "Wipeout" (I just can't get enough of people bouncing off of huge red rubber ball), and the comic strip "Ziggy".

And, in this case, you have Marky Mark (who I actually think is a quality actor) in shoot-em-up-fest, "Max Payne". I wonder if Marky Mark will have bullet time?

This weekend, it seemed I could not escape Harry Potter. Between the ABC Family marathon of movies 1 - 4 and the Order of the Phoenix now on HBO, I definitely got my fill. Or so I thought!

Today, the trailer for Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince: The Videogame hit the web and, despite its lack of depth, I am more excited than Dobby the house elf drunk on butterbeer.

The game debuts in November for all systems and we'll definitely have a Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince Walkthrough and Strategy Guide soon thereafter.

I really don't think I could have been any happier this morning to have opened my email to the announcement that the "Top Gun Anthem" will be available as a free download for Guitar Hero III, starting July 3rd.

You see, I was a mere 10 years old when Top Gun debuted, which resulted in two things: One, that I was going to become a fighter pilot no matter what (that really didn't work out once I discovered I was scared of flying), and two, that I whipped out my casio keyboard and learned how to play the Top Gun Anthem by ear (not an epic feat). I played and played that anthem thinking I was the coolest 10 year old around.

The download is available on both the X360 and PS3, staring July 3rd, just in time for the fourth of July.

3/4 of a mile. Call the ball!
