Nintendo raises annual earnings forecast...again

There's just no denying that Nintendo is, in the words of Big Goron, hot, hot, hot.

For the second time this year Nintendo has raised its annual earnings outlook. The company now expects its operating profits to reach 420 billion yen (US$ 3.7 billion) by the end of the fiscal year. This number reflects an 86% increase over the same period one year ago.

Rumors of the earnings upgrade caused Nintendo's stock to jump 7.8 percent yesterday. When the rumors were confirmed today, stocks slid a bit, down 3.5 percent to close at 66,400 yen.

While Nintendo reaps the rewards of its Wii gamble, Sony may be wallowing in the damage of its PS3 gamble. The electronics giant today reported its financial earnings, with mixed results. While the company, as a whole, posted a small operating profit, the games division nearly doubled its losses over last year, to 96.7 billion yen (US$ 841 million).

Adding salt to Sony's wound, Nintendo was able to lift its annual Wii sales target to 17.5 million units (up 1 million from previous reporting, and only 3 million shy of the Gamecube's total sales), while Sony had to admit PS3 sales will probably fall short of its 11 million target this business year.

Best. Demo. Ever. 'The Simpsons' hits Xbox Live.

The Simpsons Game is due out on October 30. However, if you can't wait to get your greasy Krusty Burger hands on some gameplay then head on over to Xbox Live to download a Demo.

This is going to be my favorite game of all time. It looks spectacular, the commentary has already cracked me up a good dozen times (in about five minutes) and the gameplay seems accessible to anyone.

We'll definitely be writing a Walkthrough and Guide for this game, and yes, it will be pleasurable. Now, release the hounds!

'Manhunt 2' gets M rating and Halloween release date

Back in June, Manhunt 2 was effectively banned in the US and UK.

Today, we get word that Rockstar has toned down the game enough to get an "M" rating from the ESRB.

Many of us still think that the original banning was Rockstar's way of getting press for the game and never had any intention of releasing it in July. October 31st seems much more appropriate.

That being said, I don't think we'll be playing this one.

Crush, with eyeliner

Okay, it's not an REM song, but it does have to do with sleep. Crush, a new puzzle game out for the PSP has piqued my interest. I hadn't heard about the game until I stumbled upon it today, via a review at gamespot.

Described as a revolutionary puzzle/platformer with Tim Burton and Danny Elfman influences, it sounds like it will exude that same awe that I felt when I first flipped from 3D to 2D in Super Paper Mario.

I'm not sure if we'll do a walkthrough for the game or not, but I definitely would like to play it.

NPD: Nintendo wins April

NPD Funworld has today released its report of video game hardware and software sales in the US for the month of April. The highlights include:

Good month overall: A 20% year-over-year increase with $838.6 million in hardware, software and accessory sales.

Software sales = "meh": Software sales remained stagnant at $389.8 million (last year's number was $395 milliion.

Software sale breakdown: Handheld software sales surged 61% to $141.5 million, thanks to Pokemon Diamond and Pearl DS titles. Console software sales, on the other hand, fell 19% to $248.3 million. Keep in mind, April of '06 bragged Kingdom Hearts 2 and The Elder Scrolls: Oblivion. April '07 bragged very little.

Nintendo games selling like gangbusters: Nintendo held the top four spots on the software sales chart with Pokemon Diamond (DS, 1.045 million), Pokemon Pearl (DS, 712,000), Super Paper Mario (Wii, 352,000), and Wii Play w/ Remote (Wii, 249,000).

Nintendo hardware selling like hotcakes: Hardware sales were up 52% to $338.4. In first place was the Nintendo DS with 471,000 units sold. The Wii came in second with 360,000 units sold. The PS3 came in 7th, between the Game Boy Advance and Gamecube, with 82,000 units sold.

The only surprise I see here is the uber-low 82,000 PS3s moved number. I'm cheering for you Sony, but, egad, you have to get some games out.

Update:
Jer has <strike>whined</strike> asked that I point out his prediction last month that March would be the last time we would see the PS2 at the top of the console charts.

The PS2, with God of War II has taken its last breath, and granted, it was an impressive gasp, but I predict that the days of seeing the PS2 at the top of the hardware sales for all consoles is now over.

Hey, it beats the big wigs at Wedbush Morgan Securities and Lazard Capital Markets who predicted software sales for the month of April would be up 15 - 24%.
